MODEL FOR SUMMARISING AND EVALUATING ARTICLES FROM SCHOLARLY JOURNALS

Title and reference of article | Pelled, L. H., Eisenhardt, K. M. and Xin, K. R. (1999) Exploring the black box: an analysis of work group diversity, conflict, and performance, Administrative Science Quarterly, 44, 1, p.p.1 - 13. | Aim/purpose of article | To investigate the relationship between work group diversity and performance by developing and testing a process model/theory. | Sample, location, method of data collection and analysis | Sample - 45 teams from three major corporations in USA. Each team averaged ten members. Surveys produced data on diversity, conflict, task and performance. Analysis - Statistical (quantitative). | Findings/Interpretations reported in the article | The suggestion that diversity in groups increases conflict which influences group performance is found to be more complex depending on the type of diversity and conflict. Diversity variables that drive task conflict differ from those that drive emotional conflict. Task conflict has more positive performance consequences than emotional conflict. However there was no evidence that emotional conflict impaired performance. Overall, diversity of race, tenure, and age influenced emotional conflict but this did not affect performance. | Significance/contribution of the article in relation to your other articles and your topic | The findings differ from the common view that diversity in groups affect group performance and that emotional conflict has a negative effect on performance. | Strengths of article | Well researched with strong background in the literature and exploration of prior research. | Weaknesses of article | North American sample may contain biases not found in other countries. | Quotes from the article that you plan to use in your assignment | “The term demographic diversity refers to the degree to which a unit (e.g., a work group or organization) is heterogeneous with respect to demographic attributes” (Pelled and Eisenhardt, 1999, p.1) | Quotes from the article that you plan to use in your assignment | “While any type of diversity may trigger task conflict, some are more likely to do so than others, based on the relevance of their corresponding belief structures” (Pelled and Eisenhardt, 1999, p.2). | Quotes from the article that you plan to use in your assignment | “While task conflict is largely shaped by the job-relatedness of diversity, emotional conflict is shaped by a more complex set of forces. One key factor is categorization, the subconscious tendency of individuals to sort each other into social categories, often on the basis of demographic attributes” (Pelled and Eisenhardt, 1999, p.4). |

...students handled the assessment 1 (for example how well students understood material, met expectations, integrated knowledge, language skills, etc) 1. Overall this year’s cohort performed very well; 147 students took the assessment of these 5 obtained marks in the 1st class category, 68 obtained 2:1, 54 2:2, 16 3rd class and 4 students failed. In percentage terms this is a 97% pass rate. With the average mark skewed towards the 2:1 level. Given that a significant number of the students were on our top up degrees programme and therefore did not have English as their first language, this was a particularly gratifying result. (handling of specific questions/sections and strengths/weaknesses in relation to each question ) 1. The exam is separated into two sections, section A was related to a case study that the students received around 3 weeks prior to the examination and section B addressed some of the conceptual material from the module. In general students handled section A, very well, having been briefed on the key issues, they prepared themselves well for the case study element. In section B the questions examined broader themes and, in general, students found this more testing. Most of the candidates chose to...

...When you hear the word exams, you usually get to be anxious about them, and about the possibility of passing or failing them. For me, exams are not a thing to be scared of. I know that some exams are very important in life but I don’t see a tragedy in failing them. You will always have a second chance to make things better as long as you will fight and learn more. I think that exams are not accurate measure of a person’s ability. Many people can get scared and they could panic and fail exams, not because they don’t have the necessary information to pass them, just because of the fact that they get very nervous, and usually they can’t concentrate enough. I understand them, because a few years ago it was a problem for me too. After a lot of exercises I managed to overcome my fears, and now I am very accustomed to exams. As a start point, we can say that people are different and it is a known fact that being different has its bonuses, but it also defines us and the way we can be and are appreciated. Therefore, an individual cannot necessarily be compared with another one because our minds and our talents don’t function in the same way. Exams test students for the same abilities ,in the same way. This can affect the grade or the overall measure of the ability tested. It is true that people have different talents, that people manifest themselves in various ways and domains. For example, an artist can choose to paint a picture of a beautiful......

...what are the advances in complexity of bryophytes over algae regarding their morphology, habitat, asexual reproduction and sexual reproduction. Bryophytes: are plants that lack vascular tissue and require environmental water to reproduce. General characteristics of this group include: a waxy cuticle to slow down water loss and gametangia that protect developing gametes. The male gamatangium is called the antheridium which produces flagellated sperm. The female archegonium produces a single egg. Bryophytes need water to reproduce. They do not contain any vascular tissue for up right support. These plants usually form mats of horizontally growing tissue. The plant grips the ground with elongated cells called rhizoids. Photosynthesis occurs in the stem-like structures above the matted plant bodies. They undergo an alternation of generations with the haploid generation being the dominant form of this cycle. The sporophytes are generally smaller and depend on the gametophyte for water and protection. Algae The term algae embraces all photosynthetic protists. It refers to an aquatic, photosynthetic way of life, not an evolutionary kinship. Most algae live in water, but some are terrestrial. Most algae live near the surface of the water producing 30 to 50 percent of the earth's oxygen. Algae are classified on the basis of conservative characteristics such as the type of cell wall, flagella, photosynthetic pigments, and the form in which food is stored. They are single celled or......
