Examine the claim that the strengths of deontology outweigh the weaknesses. (12)

One of the main strengths of the theory is that motivation is valued over consequences, which are beyond our control; an immoral motive cannot be justified by unforeseen good consequences, but a good motive is, in itself, worthy of value.

However, there are some occasions when consequences are so severe that many think it is better to break a rule than allow awful things to happen, suggesting that sometimes the weaknesses of deontology outweigh the strengths because it is personal instinct to not let something bad happen.

Two strengths of deontology that do outweigh the weaknesses is that it underpins the international law and is reliable. Kant's ethical theory is similar to most UK and many international laws, for example, if someone who had committed murder tried to defend themselves, the judge would usually say it doesn't matter if it was an accident, what is important is the act itself. It is reliable because a system of rules works, and everyone knows what their obligations are. If you allowed people to break rules because of consequences, or out of love, the legal system would be a mess and no one would know what they ought to do.

However, it can be argued that the weaknesses do in fact outweigh the strengths of deontology; one of the main weaknesses of deontology is that, when taken logically, the principle of universalisability doesn't seem to be a good principle because not all things which are unviversalisable would be desirable to universalise and neither would they necessarily be moral, for example, paedophilia.

Critics of Kant has accused him of committing a 'naturalistic fallacy'; turning an is in to an ought and he does this by arguing that what is good to do is what we ought to do not what we should
