Perhaps a student’s first experience with Academic Integrity is early in elementary school when the teacher says, “Keep your eyes to yourself and cover your work.” Here at Appalachian State University (ASU), upon admission, students take a pledge on their honor. Students pledge against lying in any manner. Additionally, cheating and stealing are unacceptable. Lying, cheating, or stealing cannot be the vehicle for gaining an academic advantage. Also, students pledge to oppose every instance of academic dishonesty. Therefore, the University provides a “user-friendly” ten-part outline explaining definitions, administration, violations, sanctions, appeals and goals of the Academic Integrity Code (AIC). Integrity

...Academic Integrity; a Responsibility for All Introduction Tricia Bertram Gallant believes “an academic integrity movement is afoot in postsecondary education institutions in the U.S. and Canada” (Gallant, T., 2008). She acknowledges academic integrity should not be taken lightly and therefore proposes a new practice of ensuring students are properly taught about academic integrity. Academic integrity is the cornerstone for any institution of higher learning. It sets the foundation for the solid work that is to be expected once a job has been landed. It is the precedence for responsibility, honesty, and good old fashion hard work. Academic integrity brings respect to the work of others and ensures the act of fairness within an institution. Universities have gone to great lengths to protect their institutions and students from violations and violators of academic integrity. It can only take one minute to destroy integrity, so a student must understand the importance of academic integrity and how it effects them academically and professionally. In this, paper I will attempt to define and discuss the importance of academic integrity for an institution and the individual student. I will also discuss the responsibilities of the institution and the student as they relate to academic integrity. And finally, I will give examples of common violations of academic integrity. What is Academic Integrity and its Importance? According to Michigan State University, “Academic...

Professional Ethics

...people have varying ideas of what is right or wrong, one can easily see why it is difficult to come up with clear understandings of how to act in all situations. Usually, people think ethics and values come into play when making praiseworthy decisions. However, “all decisions-whether judged highly ethical, grossly unethical or anywhere in between are values-based.”(Urbany 2008, p 75) Looking closer at how ethics and values play a role in a professional environment one can define three sources of values: Professional integrity, academic integrity and personal values. Integrity involves a formal relationship one has with oneself. (Stanford 2008) For the purposes of this paper, professional integrity is the relationship that one has with the company he or she represents. Academic integrity refers to intellectual property and ownership there of. Personal values simply refer to the values and standards a person holds oneself too. Professional Integrity Whether it is thought about or not, values guide everyone’s every day behavior. When making any choice,...

According to Pearce (2008) “SETTING GOALS can help you to define your priorities and so become organised, and almost all motivational experts include goal setting as an important part of their programmes.” (p. 14 (9): 27 ). My academic goals are to graduate with my Bachelors’ of Science in Psychology in 3 years while keeping my 2 full time jobs -supervisor at an Adult Day Training Center and a wife/mother. After completing The Discovery Wheel exercise I learned my personal strengths and weaknesses. I have learned that my strengths are health, purpose, and notes. I have learned that my weaknesses are time, communicating, and tests. The part that surprised me the most is what I need to work on which is communicating. I never thought communication would be something I needed to work on. But after completing this exercise it does make since, communicating is more than what most think. Profesional Values and Ethics

...Professional Values and Ethics Integrity is defined as personal ethics and values of the individual involved in the decision-making process. This can create different paths to success, depending on the choices made toward each individual goal. Gandhi explains that looking into a person's thought process presents who he or she is in the present and future. He is the perfect example on ethics and values because of the way he set his goals and how he implemented to obtain his goals. Using peaceful and non-violent resistance to battle the British policies influenced other to follow his ideas, and this drove the British out of India. Later people were able to use this idea to help persuade the United States government to change the civil rights policy. Martin Luther King Junior used the same type of ideas that worked for Gandhi to help gain support to change certain laws during the 1960's (Prabhu, 2001). Ethics and values are greatly influenced by what goals and how individuals develop over time into a success. Values are what individuals cherish and work for to meet their goals in life. Values are also defined as relative worth, merit, and of most importance to that person. Values could also be described as moral principle and beliefs of a person. Ethics is derived from the Greek word ethikos, which means customs or character of a person. Ethics involves defending, developing, and recommending, the differences between right or wrong. Ethics can be addressed by asking...

Integrity Code

...Most of the UNF Academic Integrity Code is fair to the student with its has six different rules of integrity code to measure students. The six rules include cheating, fabrication & falsification, multiple submissions, plagiarism, abuse of academic materials, and complicity in academic dishonesty. The First, UNF has effective measures on the first rule, cheating, because they contain strong words that prevent students from cheating. Many students want to get a good grade so they turn to creative people who use many different styles of cheating. UNF uses the word “intentionally” for this rule. An example of creative cheating is a female student using her nail and putting all the important vocabulary shnauthorized materials” for cheating to prevent from students creative cheating. However, UNF also needs to improve this rule because sometimes, students unintentionally do cheat. For example, during the exam time, a student just wants to see the time so he tries to look up. At that time, he sees the paper of in front of the student accidently. If a situation like this happens, how can UNF deal with the situation? If UNF puts the words “faults of negligence are also cheating”, they can handle the unintentional problem easily. The second rule is Fabrication and Falsification. This rule also has both strong and weak parts. First of all, this rule chooses good words such as “unauthorized alteTherefore, the students may think of inventing resources and citations from their brain...

Case Studies on Academic Integrity

...Enabling strategies enact academic integrity policy. Without long-term, sustainable and practical support resources, a policy will not be enacted, no matter how well it is articulated. The cases in this resource cover a range of academic integrity issues in Australian universities with application for a wider audience. These case studies have been developed by the Academic Integrity Standards Project. “…I suspect that every senior manager needs to have some training in the issue of academic integrity principles.  I learnt mine on the job, so I think that needs to be worked through so that the policy and the implementation and the people who have that power understand those principles …So I think the case study models really useful.  How would you deal with someone who had this story; you know, what would you do, and then work out what you'd do pragmatically versus where the policy fits from there.” (Senior Manager, University B, Academic Integrity Standards Project) Although they may be based on real life stories, they have been adapted and anonymised for the purposes of this project resource; pseudonyms are used in every instance. The case studies are designed to be used as triggers for discussion in group seminars and primarily target teaching staff, although they could be used for discussion with students or other academic integrity stakeholders.  Support for this project/activity has been provided by the Australian Government Office for Learning and Teaching...

What Does Integrity Mean to You?

...Integrity means being trustworthy, reliable, and decent in our dealings with others. It means being true to ourselves. When we are guided by integrity our actions align with our principles; our thoughts and words are in sync with each other. It becomes the basis for our reputation as well as our self-esteem. Integrity does not mean being perfect, but rather having high moral principles and being trusted in our actions as well as our words. It is something that compels us to do the right thing all the time. In our day-to-day life, we are presented with different choices. Some are hassle free and are very easy to make, while others may be difficult and requires significant effort. Of all the choices offered, picking the right or the wrong one is often determined by our character, which is based upon the qualities of integrity, accountability, and reliability. For example, if I am on a baseball team and my coach cannot be at practice today. He instructs me what to do and then leaves. Rather than putting a half-hearted effort into it, I decide to stick to those instructions, as I knew that I would be cheating myself as well as my teammates if I don’t follow them. Again, it was my principles that compelled me to do the right thing. Integrity plays an essential role in a community. It helps establish mutually beneficial relationships, and develop a sense of loyalty and duty amongst people. People who adhere to the principles of integrity will act correctly in academic, personal...

Ethic Actions

...University of Phoenix Material Ethical Actions Worksheet Write a 100- to 150-word response to each of the following questions: Was there anything in either the University Of Phoenix Student Code Of Conduct or the Student Code of Academic Integrity that surprised you? If so, what was it? Why were you surprised? If not, why not? Actually, everything listed in the Student Code of Conduct and the Student Code of Academic Integrity seemed normal to me. There was one thing though. In the testing, one of the questions gave an example that a student brought a knife in his lunch. I understand how a knife can be used as a weapon however; I don’t think that should count as breaking the rules. If the student actually wanted to harm someone, I do not believe the weapon would be with his lunch. And in that case, would a butter knife be considered a weapon? You can do more damage to someone with a text book or pencil than you could with a butter knife. What did you learn about the behaviors considered important for an ethical learner or student in the University of Phoenix learning community? I learned quiet a lot in the behaviors portion. I have always said “It is your life, live it the way you want.” Well I never thought that if, for example, my roommate was drinking and throwing parties every night it would affect me studying or completing my work. Vis versa also! You have to take into question how your actions are going to affect the people around you. If you study constantly...

...Code Of Conduct or the Student Code of Academic Integrity that surprised you? If so, what was it? Why were you surprised? If not, why not? From reading the texts outlined in the ethics game I am surprised but not as you think I should be. I am surprised actually that the writings should have been said. First of all, everyone that makes a conscious effort to attend University of Phoenix holds themselves higher than some of the dredges of society. Part of holding yourself higher would be to have the morals as to not do the negative things to coast through a class. Someone that does this has the potential to become the danger in their field of study. An example is a person plagiarizes their paper in their IT class. By doing this they acknowledge the do not know what they are exactly doing and could create a bigger problem in the long run. • What did you learn about the behaviors considered important for an ethical learner or student in the University of Phoenix learning community? Being an ethical learner and a Student in the university of Phoenix community is a lot more highly honored than I thought. What they said about if people commit plagiary; as a whole the community starts to fail. Holding ourselves responsible as an ethical learner is vitally important. As we hold each other accountable we should as a community hold ourselves accountable.
