Excelsior Scholarship- Is it a “ Free tuition program after all? Education, according Nelson Mandela is a powerful weapon that can change the world. lot of people value education but going to college is really expensive. On January 2017, Gov. Cuomo announced the Excelsior Scholarship. It purpose, free tution for all CUNYS & SUNYS. This “ free tuition” is not free or let me put it in another way, it is not what it seems to be. In the Forbes article and the New York times, both writers expresses their discontent towards the scholarship. However, the writer from the PBS article expresses his support for the new program. Though all these writers are entitled to their own freedom of speech, I support the antics that college should be affordable. …show more content…
Cuomo. "New York program has been hailed as an example.. higher education"( Gomez). This quote shows the author's support for the scholarship because he argues that other states should try to follow the footsteps of New York. The idea that this scholarships provides an affordable cost for higher education comes with a lot of consequences. For example, many republicans made sure that the students that receives this aid receive it to the fullest but they have to pay for it in an indirect way. "Some professors argue that..more money"(Gomez). The above quotation is significant because it shows the cons that comes with this aid. As an economist students I think this is one of the stupidest grant ever. This aid does not help lower income student. This scholarship is not efficient because some people are made better off whiles others are made worse off. Living in NY is costly.Beneficiaries are prevented from exploring better opportunities elsewhere. The free grants becomes loans for beneficiaries that exit the state. The cost that comes with this aid outweighs the benefits of the free tuition and therefore society as a whole is worse
