EXP 105 Essay
Explaining learning to someone who has not taken this class yet is quite simple. Learning is simply taking something unknown and being able to use and apply it to something in your daily life. My views of learning has expanded, because it has taught me how to learn better and expanded on my thought process on how to absorb information better for my learning style. I still feel my definition is the same looking back at week one but to add to that it must be catered to your own personal learning style in order to be a successful learner.
In terms of learning I typically Use First my technical reasoning learning pattern, because I like to try to figure things out on my own first. Then if I need to, I use my precise learning pattern and ask questions or seek help for my professor or other resources. I tend to use my sequence often as well making sure I am organized and staying on task. Confluence helps me to brainstorm and get my creative juices flowing. It also helps me to piece the information that I have learned together because I am learning in my own way. These are my learning pattern scores, sequence 27, precise 23, technical 31 and confluent 27. Sequence, technical and confluent are my Use First level of use and Precise is Use as needed, with these scores I am considered a Strong Willed Learner.
My strategy is simple, dive right in. After reading, whether it be to complete a reading assignment, instructions to a discussion, assignment or quiz, I begin to break down the assignment. Of course if don’t understand I may read again a couple of times for more clarity, and if I still don’t understand then I seek other resources like websites or my instructor. I took advantage of my learning strengths because I feel it’s important to be creative when learning new information. For me it’s less stressful when I have examples to follow or

...When you come to a point in your life when you’re faced to make significant choices or changes you are entering a new cycle of learning. Because of the depths of its outcomes this type of learning is known as transformational. The four stages of transformational learning are recognizing the problem, confronting it, finding the solution, and integrating a new perspective and a new set of assumptions into your life. These stages are often stressful and overwhelming. I have experienced transformational change 4 years ago. The situation I was unfortunately faced with was the death of my husband. I was more or less in denial for a while of the problem. After sometime passed I sat down and thought to myself I have to face this, the biggest reason was for my daughter. I knew that I had to carry on with my life not just for myself but for her as well. After sitting down and realizing this isn’t going away and it’s not a bad dream I knew I had to confront the situation with all I had. This was not easy. I never thought I would have to confront such a problem. By confronting it I found even though it was painful it was helpful. I knew that until I confront this I can’t fix it. After what seemed took forever I came up with not necessarily a solution to what had happened but I figured out what I’m going to do from here on out. Moving forward was my biggest plan I knew there’s no going back and no point of dwelling on the past. I also found a way to handle the grief in a better way by joining...

Exp 105 Week 1 Journal

...David’s Story sounds like most of the people in the world today. Struggling to make ends meet because they either gave up on school or felt they were not capable of doing further education. I saw it firsthand with my own older brother. Thankfully he ended up pursuing his goal and finishing high school to enter the Marine Corps. He always said that decision was what saved his life from the inevitable chaos that was to bestow on him. However, my own learning situation started when I first graduated from military training and began technical school. I did not enjoy my job from the beginning because I knew what was waiting for me once I got to my duty station. In all honesty, my job is terrible when you compare it to almost any other job besides a select few. There is a lot of rules and regulations you must memorize and supervision is abysmal. Technical school was a little bit of a struggle when it came time for me to show certain things because I had zero interest and zero motivation to do it. I had problems back at home with my mother’s health deteriorating and someone telling me how much the real job is going to suck once I start. I failed my hands on portion and failed a block test as well but redid both and passed. There are a couple things I could have done differently like not listen to what anybody has to say and find out on my own for it to be true. Which I eventually did but it would have benefited me in technical school at least. I could have also at least tried to take...

Lehman Brothers

...Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. The control break downs of Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. included the massive amount of money borrowed to fund its investments. A considerable portion of this investment was in real estate, which made the investment defenseless against a fall in the market. Lehman also used one of its small companies to reallocate investments off its books. The firm was active in the market for Residential Mortgage Backed Securities (RMBS). The process involved buying several residential mortgages, combining them and selling them as securities. RMBS buyers actually purchased claims on the cash flow generated by the securities. Lehman produced a great amount of these securities, making the demand high for mortgage originators. This led mortgage originators to extend credit to people who were not credit worthy, or did not have enough income causing these people to have upside down mortgages on their homes when housing prices plummeted in 2006. In 2000, the stock market started to decline and the Federal Reserve significantly reduced interest rates.  These lower interest rates caused inexpensive mortgage payments, which lead to a large demand for homes.  Homeowners took advantage of the low interest rates and refinanced their mortgages. In 2008, Lehman announced that they would file for bankruptcy after a huge loss in the market, a loss of investors and their inability to find an adequate buyer. Soon after, their collapse set the market into panic mode...

...ignored basic regulatory rules which created financial danger. Basic rules are the way companies grow and expand. Their desire to make money at all cost was more important than following basic ethical values. 2) What was the culture at Lehman Brothers like? How did this culture contribute the company’s downfall? The culture at Lehman Brothers was to take risks at all costs. When Transactions were presented to them they ignored the warning signals costing them. This eventually led to shady deals which eventually lead to the company’s downfall. Repo 105 is a good example of how Lehman misused this device to get some $50 billion of undesirable assets of its balance sheet at the end of the first and second quarter of 2008, instead of selling those assets at a loss. They continued to take lots of risks which caused them to lose a lot of money, there by bringing down there previously good name. They did tax deals like Repo 105 and didn’t care if it was legal or not. 3) What role did Lehman’s executives play in the company’s collapse? Were they being responsible and ethical? Discuss. Lehman Brothers & Repo 105

...Repo 105 On September 15th 2008, the fourth largest U.S investment bank, Lehman Brothers, filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy. With revenues peaking at $19.2 billion in 2007 and over $600 billion in assets, the collapse of Lehman became the largest bankruptcy in history. Lehman’s demise was attributed to their aggressive investment strategy and significant exposure to the subprime mortgage market. As the housing bubble grew, Lehman Brothers acquired several mortgage lenders, some of the acquired firms frequently made loans to home buyers without full documentation (Jeffers 2011). When consumers began defaulting on mortgages and market conditions began to unravel, Lehman as well as many other banks faced huge losses. The write down of debt securities had significant adverse effects on Lehman’s balance sheet. Furthermore, credit rating agencies began focusing more on leverage ratios of investments banks. Lehman’s leverage ratios were already extremely high. A downgrade on Lehman’s credit rating would have sent Lehman’s share price on a downward spiral and hinder their ability to receive financing. In order to prevent these occurrences Lehman would have to sell some of its assets or raise capital. Lehman was unable to sell any of its assets or raise any capital because no one knew what the value of their complex mortgage securities were. In response to deteriorating economic conditions the investment bank used a very aggressive accounting maneuver called “Repo 105”, its...

The objective of this paper is to focus on and analyze one of such scandals. In this paper, the Lehman Brothers’ issue with the SEC regarding their malicious use of the Repo 105 maneuver will be studied, focusing on the audit report that the external CPA firm issued, speculations on the company’s statements, analysis of the management and auditor’s responsibility in the falsified financial reporting, the sanctions under the SOX and key actions that the concerned regulatory boards should make.
