1. Heat water in a pan or beaker until the water (enough water so the object remains covered) is boiling vigorously.
2. While waiting for the water to boil, measure the mass of the metal with the scale. Remember to record the answer to one more decimal place than what is marked off by the scale.
3. Once the water, on the stove (or over a bunsen burner), is boiling, drop the metal object into the pot (or beaker) and let the object sit in the water for about ten minutes.
4. While the metal is heating, take the two Styrofoam cups and nest one inside the other. Since Styrofoam is a good insulator, two Styrofoam cups make an excellent calorimeter.
5. Measure the mass of the calorimeter with your scale. After you do this, fill the calorimeter with about three-quarters full of ice water. Measure the mass of the calorimeter again (make certain the ice is melted). …show more content…
After the metal has been properly heated quickly take the metal object out of the boiling water and place the object directly in the cold water (water should be 0 °C).
7. Stir the water carefully with the thermometer and periodically read the temperature without lifting the thermometer out of the water. Continue this process until temperature stop increasing, and then write down the final temperature.
8. Now use the equation q=mcΔT to determine how much heat the metal transferred into the water. Use the change in temperature in degrees C, and the specific heat of water as 4.184 J/gC.
9. Use equation 2.5, and since we are ignoring the calorimeter, q calorimeter=0. Now with q water calculated you can figure out q
