The diversity competency includes the knowledge,skills, and abilities to value unique individual, group, and organizational characteristics, embrace such characteristics as potential sources of strength, and appreciate the uniqueness of each. This competency includes the ability to help people work effectively together even if their interests and backgrounds are different. The conflicts that may or could arise are disagreement, contest, and intractable(difficult) people.A lot of times individuals are slow or even afraid of something or someone new. This being said a manager must be aware of the fact that these very issues could occur and must be ready to resolve any and all problems. Effective conflict resolution means being able to use differences in ways that strengths rather than divide. Develop clear purposes and goals, design and conduct effective meetings, ensure appropriate representation and understanding of roles. There must also be some education, and this is done through training. The training should equip the individuals with the right tools to educate as well as inspire everyone. The key attributes of the diversity competency include the knowledge, skills and abilities of individuals, teams, and the organization to perform effective in doing the following: fostering; learning; embracing and developing; communicating and personally practicing; providing leadership and applying governmental laws and regulations as well as organizational policies and regulations concerning diversity. (Pg. 14-15) The levels of conflict that may be present when individuals embrace the attributes of diversity competency are listed below. (Pg. 386)
Intrapersonal Conflict occurs within an individual and usually involves some of goal cognitive, or affective conflict. The prefix intra means limited to, such as being within, during or between layers. When a reaction is not shared in the same matter, that individual feels as if their co-workers are leaving them out and/or possibly attacking them by not being on their side and they feel that they have no control. So they deal with issues by avoidance.
Provide recommendations for reducing conflict.
First recognize why the conflict is important to that person, lay out the pro's and con's of conflict resolution, and allow the individual who has the issue help with a conclusion for resolving the issue. Having the employees involvement shows that you are really concern with the issue and want to find a even balance for all parties involved.
Diversity Competency includes the knowledge, skills, and abilities to value unique individual, group, and organizational characteristics, embrace such characteristics as potential sources of strength, and appreciate the uniqueness of each. This includes the ability to help people work effectively together even if their interests and backgrounds are different. Intrapersonal Conflict within an individual and usually involves some of goal cognitive, or affective conflict. With this it is triggered when a person’s behavior results in outcomes that are mutually exclusive. Inner tensions and frustrations commonly result. Many decisions involve the resolution of intrapersonal goal conflict. The intensity increases under one or more of the following conditions such as several realistic alternative courses of action are available to the individual for handling the conflict, the individual sees the positive and negative consequences of the alternative courses of action as roughly equal, or the source of conflict is important to the individual. Severe unresolved intrapersonal conflict within employees, customers, or others may trigger intense interpersonal conflict.
Recommendations are to recognize what the conflict is, talk about what’s going on and try to come up with a resolution, employees showing concerns with these issues should want to talk it out and resolve it. Hellriegel/Slocum 2011 custom edition
