This leads to question how we end up dealing with piles of harmful, insensible, and uninformative contemporary practices of trauma documentary. In the same context, Azoulay asks a relevant question and wonders what could possibly be the authorised, political or social settings that allow the acts of exhibiting and seeing traumas of other suffered people as spectacles of exclusion. (Azoulay, 2012). This query indeed makes us re-see this type of exhibition as a phenomenon of its kind, wondering how it is acceptable to share depictions of disturbance and suffering at the expense of hurt people and their beloved ones. That is in an art exhibition, which is an atmosphere of observation, admiration and socializing.

In 1977 In her book On Photography she argued that promoting the act of suffering and pain doesn’t affect us anymore and our ability to ethically respond and react has come to an end “… the photographic image no longer has the power to enrage, to incite, that the visual representation of suffering has become clichéd, that we have become bombarded by sensationalist photography and that, as a result, our capacity for ethical responsiveness has become diminished.” (Cited in Butler, P: 955, …show more content…
Butler continues to question the type of reality that has been represented by Abu Ghraib photographs and how the ‘frame’ of exhibiting the reality can limit what we can call ‘reality’. About that she says “So we are seeing what is true- in the sense that this really happened, and yet, the truth of what we see has already been selected for us - and in that way we do not know precisely where the happening begins and ends” (Butler, P: 960, 2007). Yet, we see this ‘reality’ that has been curated and selected for us surrounding us from all sides. (Butler,

(ed.), Blackwell Handbook of Technology and Innovation Management, Cambridge, MA: Blackwell Publishers The comments of the following people on an earlier draft are greatly appreciated: Sridhar Balasubramanian, Dick Blackburn, Paul Bloom, Ed Cornet, Ely Dahan, Abbie Griffin, Steve Hoeffler, Erin MacDonald, Jackki Mohr, Bill Moore, Vithala Rao, Allan Shocker, and Gal Zauberman. Introduction Touted as the “most significant category innovation since toilet paper first appeared in roll form in 1890,” dispersible (flushable) moist toilet tissue on a roll was introduced in the United States by Kimberly Clark in 2001. According to a corporate press release, Cottonelle Fresh Rollwipes was a breakthrough product that “delivers the cleaning and freshening of pre-moistened wipes with the convenience and disposability of toilet paper.” Internal market research seemed to indicate that there was a clear customer need for a new product to supplement dry toilet paper. Surveys and focus groups revealed that over 60% of adult consumers had experimented with a moist cleaning method (e.g., using baby wipes, wetting a washcloth, sprinkling water on dry toilet paper) and one out of four used a moist cleaning method...

...10 Qualitative Research Methods in Psychology Deborah Biggerstaff Warwick Medical School University of Warwick, Coventry UK 1. Introduction In the scientific community, and particularly in psychology and health, there has been an active and ongoing debate on the relative merits of adopting either quantitative or qualitative methods, especially when researching into human behaviour (Bowling, 2009; Oakley, 2000; Smith, 1995a, 1995b; Smith, 1998). In part, this debate formed a component of the development in the 1970s of our thinking about science. Andrew Pickering has described this movement as the “sociology of scientific knowledge” (SSK), where our scientific understanding, developing scientific ‘products’ and ‘know-how’, became identified as forming components in a wider engagement with society’s environmental and social context (Pickering, 1992, pp. 1). Since that time, the debate has continued so that today there is an increasing acceptance of the use of qualitative methods in the social sciences (Denzin & Lincoln, 2000; Morse, 1994; Punch, 2011; Robson, 2011) and health sciences (Bowling, 2009; Greenhalgh & Hurwitz, 1998; Murphy & Dingwall, 1998). The utility of qualitative methods has also been recognised in psychology. As Nollaig Frost (2011) observes, authors such as Carla Willig and Wendy Stainton Rogers consider qualitative psychology is much more accepted today and that it has moved from “the margins to the mainstream in psychology in the UK.” (Willig & Stainton...

PREFACE Rationale We agreed to produce the instructor’s manual for the sixth edition of A First Look at Communication Theory because it’s a first-rate book and because we enjoy talking and writing about pedagogy. Yet when we recall the discussions we’ve had with colleagues about instructor’s manuals over the years, two unnerving comments stick with us: “I don’t find them much help”; and (even worse) “I never look at them.” And, if the truth be told, we were often the people making such points! With these statements in mind, we have done some serious soul-searching about the texts that so many teachers—ourselves...
