The author helps the readers understand what it was like to live through the 1917 Explosion, in Halifax Harbor. The author does this by giving details of what this disaster looked and felt like, giving stories of real life families, and giving people's thoughts, feelings, and examples of what people were doing.

One way the author does this is giving details of what the disaster looked and felt like. This helps because you now know what the people who were living through this saw and felt, so you can infer about their thoughts and feelings. If you can understand people's thoughts and feelings you can better understand what it was like to live through this. “People felt the ground shake 250 miles away.”(Pg.9) This helps you grasp how powerful …show more content…
In the story she uses 13 year old Noble Driscoll. “When 13-year-old Noble Driscoll woke up, he found himself in a pile of rubble near what used to be his school.” (Pg.5) This helps because it gives an example of what might of happened to you if you were there. You might wake up just like him.

The last way the author helped the reader was to give people's thoughts, feelings and things people were doing during everything. Before the explosion-”Children gathered their schoolbooks,and fathers pulled on their coats and headed off to work”(Pg6) This shows it was a normal day and no one was expecting anything bad to happen. After the explosion-”Noble wondered if he was the last person alive”(Pg5) This shows no one was around him and his friends were gone. THis all helps because it shows the day went from normal to devastating.
