The patient in Room 120 was a tiny, elderly lady with mild dementia who had been admitted to the hospital because she was suffering from urinary tract infection. I was there to provide her a safe environment and help her with feeding. As I spent a week with her, I noticed that while her physical condition improved, her spirit remained listless and depressed. The woman accepted her treatment reluctantly even crying or screaming at times at the nursing staff. Assuming that her outbursts might be the result of loneliness rather than confusion, I decided to spend more time with her at the end of each volunteer shift. After I earned her trust, she confided in me her story. She said that she lived alone and had recently lost her husband and son. She felt lonely and had no friends. Realizing that her asocial behavior was the result of deep-seated pain, I gave the best medicine I could offer: my friendship. Depending upon pre-test scores, 200 students of 10th class were divided into two equal groups (n=100) named as experimental group and control group. The experimental group was involved in co-curricular activities and the control group did not participate in any activity beyond the classroom. There were two types of co-curricular activities. First physical i.e., games, athletics and P.T (physical training) etc and the other was debates, drama speeches etc. The experimental group carried out activities for forty minutes daily for twelve weeks.
