“Eyes on the Prize” was a documentary created by PBS that explored the American Civil Rights Movement. The section we watched in class detailed the death of Emmit Till. A young boy who was viciously murdered over calling an unattractive white woman “Baby.” When the men who were convicted of the murder were sent to trial, they were convicted not guilty from a jury of white males. After this event, Rosa Parks refused to give her seat up to a white man and was arrested. These were the starting points of this revolution, because of Martin Luther King Jr. He changed the perspective of how African Americans should view Caucasian people, rather than be angry with them, they should feel forgiveness. That was the start of a new perspective. From watching the film and exploring the website, I have …show more content…
The civil rights movement is my favorite in history, I believe it is because it is most recent. I do not really care for learning about wars and things that happened way back in time. Everyone has studied the civil rights movement in school, but a few days is not really enough to grasp the concepts of what was happening in that time. I really enjoyed watching Martin Luther King Jr. and how he preached forgiveness. Considering everything that they had be through, forgiveness should have been the least of their worries. I would like to do more research on Martin luther King Jr. because I would like to know how he came to this conclusion. Did he always feel like this was the correct way to look at things? Or did he just not see change when there was hatred in their hearts? What really made him want to be the face of the movement? These are the questions I would really like to know concerning Martin Luther King Jr. I now know why on Martin Luther King day that you are suppose to volunteer your time. I did not understand that until after watching this film, and now I think it is very fitting for the

Martin Luther King and Tavis Film Analysis

...explored Martin Luther King’s stand against the Vietnam War and the influence of his legacy today. Tavis reached out to scholars, associates and personal friends of Dr. King who gave personal accounts of their feelings toward MLK and his movements. These events will also be supported by evidence from two other films, “Eyes on the Prize: Episode 4” which profiled MLK’s last year prior to his assassination, and “The Assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr.” which provided additional details in regard to the FBI’s potential conspiracy against Dr. King. This film was chosen as my main source for analysis due to a personal connection with how I relate to Dr. King and his convictions for what he believes in. Just as Dr. King described Americans becoming complacent to the injustices of justice in his speech, we also tend to become complacent about why we celebrate this brilliant leader’s life. His drive and determination should be modeled by every American citizen, especially by those in successive generations who have been denied their dreams. I also intend to highlight why his ideology could live and thrive in today’s policy. The central message of this documentary builds on when Dr. King gave his speech, “A Call to Conscience” April 4, 1967 at the Riverside Church in New York City. As Vincent Harding, a close friend and author of this speech would explain the one thing that never changed during rewrites was where and why this speech came from MLK’s conscience. He believed the...

Social Business of Dr. Yunus

...Learning Report To: The Students of BBA & LLB Programme From: Muhammad Fazlur Rabb Tanvir Assistant Professor, School of Business, Metropolitan University, Sylhet. 10 October 2012 Social Business (Source: Yunus Talks on Social Business with British Council team, The Daily Star, Wednesday, 10 October 2012) Introduction: Social business, as the term is commonly used, was first defined by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Prof. Muhammad Yunus and is described in his books Creating a world without poverty—Social Business and the future of capitalism and Building Social Business—The new kind of capitalism that serves humanity's most pressing needs. A number of organizations with which he is involved actively promote and incubate social businesses. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_business) In Yunus' definition, a social business is a non-loss, non-dividend company designed to address a social objective within the highly regulated marketplace of today. It is distinct from a non-profit because the business should seek to generate a modest profit but this will be used to expand the company’s reach, improve the product or service or in other ways to subsidise the social mission. In fact a wider definition of social business is possible, including any business which has a social rather than financial objective. Prototype: In Yunus’ book Creating a World without Poverty—Social Business and the Future of Capitalism, two different types of social businesses are proposed: ...

Canada

...“Canada is an unknown territory for the people who live in it, and I’m not talking about the fact that you may not have taken a trip to the Arctic or to Newfoundland, you may not have explored as the travel folders have it – This Great Land of Ours. I’m talking about Canada as a state of mind, as the space you inhabit not just with your body but with your head. It’s that kind of space in which we find ourselves lost. What a lost person needs is a map of the territory, with his own position marked on it so he can see where he is in relation to everything else. Literature is not only a mirror; it is also a map, a geography of the mid. Our literature is one such map, if we can learn to read it as our literature, as the product of who and where we have been. We need such a map desperately; we need to know about here, because here is where we live. For the members of a country or culture, shared knowledge of their place, their here, is not a luxury but a necessity. Without that knowledge we will not survive.” Margaret Atwood, Survival As Atwood’s statement demonstrates, Canadian literature is concerned with place and displacement, and with the development of an effective identifying relationship between self and environs. Canada’s literature whether written in English or French reflects three main parts of Canadian experience. First, Canadian writers often emphasize the effects of climate and geography on the life and work of their people. Second, frontier’s...

This industry, along with DVD rentals (both from online providers such as Netflix, and cable services such as On Demand and Pay-Per-View), is part of the larger industry of “watching movies in the home.” However, since Netflix is already positioned in this market, with its online DVD rentals, we will examine the smaller 5 portion of the market that is streaming online movies. This business is too closely related to the movie downloading service to be considered as a separate market. Threat of Potential Entrants Today, internet video rental industry is very profitable and still has a very good develop prospect. After Netflix’s success, the whole video industry starts to change gradually, and more and more people start to consider entering this field. However, for most of those potential entrants, this industry has some big barriers to entry. First of all, the service in this industry is already very complete. With its seven-year-development...

Facebook

...Using Facebook to Teach Rhetorical Analysis Jane Mathison Fife The attraction of Facebook is a puzzle to many people over the age of thirtyfive, and that includes most college faculty. Yet students confess to spending significant amounts of time on Facebook, sometimes hours a day. If you teach in a computer classroom, you have probably observed students using Facebook when you walk in the room. Literacy practices that fall outside the realm of traditional academic writing, like Facebook, can easily be seen as a threat to print literacy by teachers, especially when they sneak into the classroom uninvited as students check their Facebook profiles instead of participating in class discussions and activities. This common reaction reflects James King and David O’Brien’s (2002: 42) characterization of the dichotomy teachers often perceive between school and nonschool literacy activities (although they are not referring to Facebook specifically): “From teachers’ perspectives, all of these presumably pleasurable experiences with multimedia detract from students’ engagement with their real work. Within the classroom economy technology work is time off task; it is classified as a sort of leisure recreational activity.” This dichotomy can be broken down, though; students’ enthusiasm for and immersion in these nonacademic literacies can be used to complement their learning of critical inquiry and traditional academic concepts like rhetorical analysis. Although they read these texts daily...

Analysis of Balran Halwai from White Tiger by Aravind Adiga

...when he visits Bangalore. Balram Halwai is a man who has freed himself from the Darkness and now lives in the Light (The two India’s living side by side). The novel shows us the large gap between the rich and the poor, the struggle of the deprived-class and feudalism in the smaller villages. It also highlights the individual’s aspiration to get out of the Darkness of his life. As Balram is the only narrator in the novel, the question arises as to whether his thoughts are his own or is he representing the views of the author. In order to explore this issue further, the following research question is framed- “Is Balram Halwai is a rounded character or is he the mouthpiece of the author?” In an attempt to answer this question an in depth analysis of the novel was done. As the novel is a comparatively new novel, not much secondary data was available. With the limited references available I investigated the narrative technique used by the author and the evolution of the character of Balram as the novel progresses. Through Balram Halwai’s narration, Adiga takes us on a safari as it were, covering the gamut of the underbellies of the cities (Delhi and Bangalore) as much as of the spectrum of mofusil India. I concluded that the character of Balram Halwai grows in the novel....

Business Correspondence

...FOREWORD At no time during the last three or four decades have the communication skills of individuals in the business world come under closer scrutiny than today. And never before have those who work in the business world needed better, more effective communication skills. The emerging technology appears to be increasing, rather than decreasing, the need for effective communication skills. As more individuals have ready access to desk-top equipment to process written communication, fewer support personnel will be readily available to provide editing assistance. Therefore, welldeveloped communication skills among originators are more important to success than ever before. This book is suitable for several different audiences, including undergraduate and graduate students. The organization of this manual is a logic sequence of chapters including both business communication and correspondence. The first part is dedicated to business communication and the second to business correspondence. The special features found in this edition are: 1. Examples of effective letter writing. Studies have shown students studying written business communication can learn as much, if not more, from ineffective examples of written communication as they do from effective examples. 2. Varied application problems in the writing-oriented chapters. The number of problems has been increased. While the majority of problems require the writing of a letter or report, some are designed...

The report discusses the background of the company and its current state of CSR practices. For better evaluation, the analysis is broken up into four thrust areas, namely The Infosys Foundation – which deals with various social welfare activities, Sustainable Change Programs – which deals with all levels of education, The Employee – Driven Programs – which are loose, unstructured programs run by volunteers and the Eco Group Programs – which deal primarily with reducing Infosys’ carbon footprint. The report discusses the CSR initiatives taken by the firm in each of these areas and subsequently provides an assessment for them based upon the criteria of proper implementation, measurable impact, magnitude and fit with the organization’s business. In forming the assessment, quantitative data has been taken wherever possible, for e.g. in the case of the financial viability of the CSR initiatives, the amount allocated to CSR has been compared with the annual profit figures of the organization. However, majority of the assessment is based upon qualitative data collected from third party assessment...
