3. Examine the organizational structure that has resulted from the merger or acquisition. Instagram was founded in 2010, by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger. It only had just a handful of employees (13 employees) supporting its popular photo sharing application (8). After Facebook purchased Instagram, it has decided to keep the Instagram's photo sharing service managed independently. This is contrary to what Facebook did with its previous acquisitions. After acquisition of a company, Facebook tend to close their products and accommodate their staff on some other projects (8).
Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook, commented on his profile page that, he would keep in mind, about the strength of Instagram's photo sharing application and strive to add more features to the photo - sharing service rather than just trying to integrate it into Facebook. This is the very reason for which Facebook was very much committed to continue building and allow Instagram to grow independently (4).
Instagram CEO, Kevin Systrom, also reiterated his plans to strengthen and support the service's functionality and said he would look forward to take the advantage of Facebook's resources and talent (1).
Analyze the major differences between the resulting company and the original two (2) organizations.
The below picture summarizes the Facebook organization chart which is constructed by, a website that is specialized in designing organizational structure diagrams (9).
Instagram organizational structure is limited to a total of 13 employees including the co-founders, Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger. For all the above researched reasons stated in this section, I would like to speculate that Facebook has given free hand to Instagram and its CEO to keep performing independently to strengthen the Instagram's photo sharing...

Globalization: Changing the World's Economy

...Globalization: Changing the World’s Economy Globalization is the process by which the interaction of economic, political, cultural, and environmental systems across geographical borders are accepted as part of a more integrated and interdependent world economy. Some people view it as an exchange of people, goods, ideas, capital, and cultures across national borders linked by the development of modern technologies, such as the Internet (Globalization, 2007). In the last few decades, the advantages of globalization have been debate because some argue that it is good for the world economy, while others argue that it can cause catastrophic economic and environmental consequences. Although globalization has some negative effects, such as increasing income inequality between the poor and the rich, its positive effects outweigh the costs. Therefore, globalization improves countries’ economic growth, people’s standard of living, and information technology. Many people believe that the concept of globalization was caused by the liberation of markets after the post-war monetary agreements, such as the Breton Woods System. However, globalization has already been in practice for centuries all over the world. These agreements accelerated globalization because they helped to open new markets in different countries, and reduced trade barriers through the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT). Some archeologists found evidence of trade between the Roman Empire and Sri Lanka, and......

Hanks November 28, 2011 When specific principles are implemented in an organization that allow free flow of information, freedom to try out new ideas and innovations, with a positive, open culture, beautiful things happen. This in turn makes for happy employees, which has a huge impact on the company's bottom line. Facebook is one such company that has attracted countless employees because of the founder's mission, optimism for the future, motivation and empowerment of his employees. His principles will be reviewed in this paper, however, the resources organizations use to grow their business will be discussed first. Organizational behavior is defined as the actions of individuals and groups in an organizational context. Those actions are guided by the organization as they focus on acquiring, developing and applying the knowledge and skills of people which is managing organizational behavior. The company can then organize and manage people's knowledge and skills effectively to implement the organization's strategy and gain a competitive edge, known as strategic OB approach. ...Recruitment at Walt Disney: Organizational Chart: In 1943, five years after it was founded and during the height of World War II, Walt Disney Studios put out an organization chart to explain how the company functioned. What’s fascinating is how it differs from org charts issued by most corporations. Typically, corporate org charts are hierarchical, with each operating division isolated into “silos” showing job titles according to reporting chain of command and ultimate authority. The CEO and SVPs get the higher positions and bigger boxes; the little boxes represent the expendable worker “bees.” The Disney org chart, on the other hand, is based on process, from the story idea through direction to the final release of the film. All of the staff positions are in the service of supporting this work flow.  the Disney chart is showing an operational flow, not an org authority Structure at Walt Disney There are four main divisions to the Walt Disney Company. These divisions include media networks, parks and resorts, studio entertainment, and consumer products. The Walt Disney Company is united by a central CEO and President. He should ensure smooth relations and operations between the multitudes of branches that make up the Walt Disney Company. He should also be responsible for company public image. Disney's management is primarily split into two units. These units are Corporate and Business Units. Corporate management is management within the overall Walt......

Digital Divide

...1) The digital divide is a gap many influential bodies are trying to close. How many so called solutions have actually worked and have successfully made permanent positive change in a region. Use supportive evidence in your argument What is the digital divide? For most people living in developed countries, technology is something we are all familiar with. It is fast, it is dynamic, and it changes rapidly. It is everywhere in our lives. Change is ongoing, it is constant. From the emergence of the first personal computers in the 1970s (Beekman and Beekman, 2012), to smart phones today that make earlier computers look like dinosaurs, technology has come a long way. It is so ingrained in our lives it is almost unimaginable to fathom living in a world without it. And yet, some still do. It also begs the question that if ever connectivity was lost would it cause the western world to devolve and become 2nd world countries, or even third world. This paper explores the Digital Divide as it is defined today, the areas which are most affected by this divide, and focuses on Africa, and solutions implemented to try to close the gap. The term “Digital Divide” was coined some time in the 1990s, evolving from a number of definitions. One of its earlier definitions was by Woolinksy, defined as the lack of access to computers (Gunkel, 2003). It has since evolved to be known as the social concern that various groups in the world have a lack of access to Information and Communications......

Modeling the Adoption and Use of Social Media by Nonprofit Organization

...Saxton. (forthcoming). Modeling the adoption and use of social media by nonprofit organizations. New Media & Society, forthcoming. Abstract: This study examines what drives organizational adoption and use of social media through a model built around four key factors – strategy, capacity, governance, and environment. Using Twitter, Facebook, and other data on 100 large US nonprofit organizations, the model is employed to examine the determinants of three key facets of social media utilization: 1) adoption, 2) frequency of use, and 3) dialogue. We find that organizational strategies, capacities, governance features, and external pressures all play a part in these social media adoption and utilization outcomes. Through its integrated, multidisciplinary theoretical perspective, this study thus helps foster understanding of which types of organizations are able and willing to adopt and juggle multiple social media accounts, to use those accounts to communicate more frequently with their external publics, and to build relationships with those publics through the sending of dialogic messages. Keywords: social media, new media, nonprofit organizations, Facebook, Twitter, technology adoption and use, diffusion of innovation, dialogue, organization-public relations Modeling the Adoption and Use of Social Media 2 Introduction The rapid diffusion of social media applications is ushering in new possibilities for nonprofit organizations to communicate with and engage the public.......
