Facets of Beauty
What is the first image that comes to your mind immediately after hearing the term beauty? Is it for example the famous model and representative of Victoria’s Secret, Adriana Lima, or a beautiful landscape you have seen and that it is still engraved in your memory, or just someone’s smile after giving him your help? According to Merriam Webster’s Dictionary, beauty is defined as “the quality or aggregate of qualities in a person or thing that gives pleasure to the senses or pleasurably exalts the mind or spirit” (p.108); nonetheless, this concept remains relative and abstract because everyone pretends to know what the term “beautiful” means, but no one can really define it . In fact, beauty takes a variety of facets and may be seen from different perspectives depending on an individual’s perception.
External beauty is the first facet that beauty can take. Many people see beauty in physical traits or in the fact of being physically attractive. Having blue eyes and blond hair, being tall and fit or being cheerful and dynamic are all characteristics of external beauty. Nonetheless, these characteristics are not a standard of judgment because they may differ from one person to another. Nowadays, media, movies and advertisement emphasize physical beauty that seems to them to be the most important criteria to attract people. As a result, a lot of people, especially women, swallow what advertisements try to make them think and spend a lot of money and time taking care of their physical aspect, thinking that this is the only way to show their loveliness and prettiness. Moreover, due to the fact that human beings care a lot about what others may think about them, they try to follow the standard of beauty that these advertisements impose to them. As a result, many people do not hesitate to do surgical operations in order to conform to the new wave that has pervaded the world about what beauty is.
The second type of beauty is beauty of the soul, which especially concerns the internal characteristics that a person may have. Many people may not be physically attractive, but as soon as others become close to them, talk to them and see the way they behave, these persons become perceived in a different way, and people start seeing them beautiful thanks to their inner wealth. According to the popular saying “beauty is in the eye of the beholder”, which means that there is a kind of beauty that not all people are able to perceive. This type of beauty requires persons to be close to each other in order to see the real value of their soul. The fact is that there are people who are really attractive, but when persons become close to them, they realize that their beauty loses all its significance because of their bad ethics. The beauty of the soul is one of the most difficult categories of beauty to notice, for it does not consist of the external appearance as much as it focuses on what people have inside.
Another type of beauty is beauty of nature. Many people relate the meaning of beauty to nature and see natural beauty from a variety of angles. For instance, trees, oceans, flowers, rivers and mountains are all components of natural beauty. Poets may admire the sunset or the waves of the beach and consider it as a source of inspiration to write their poems. Other people like painters may be attracted by the color of the sky and the forms that the clouds take to produce wonderful drawings. Others may perceive beauty in the splendid scenery of the leaves falling during the fall season or the sound of the thunder during a cold raining night, while other people may identify natural beauty in the falling of the snow or the rain, a sunny day in the beach or the birds’ songs. Natural beauty is easy to notice because nature plays a significant role in people’s life, and no one could be indifferent to all its components.
The last type of beauty is beauty of God. God is the creator of all what people see around them, so if they can identify beauty in one of God’s numerous creations, it is obvious that they may realize that God is beautiful. Spiritual persons see the beauty of God in all the gifts he has provided human beings with. They also perceive beauty in all God’s qualities, like forgiveness, as he forgives people’s sins, generosity, as he gives human beings blessings, like the gift of seeing, hearing and touching, and helpfulness, as he helps people to realize their prayers, and love, as he loves human beings and want them always to be better. Spiritual persons also see the incarnation of beauty in the divine creator because they believe that the loveliness of his creations reflect him. Furthermore, many people identify beauty of God through his power since he controls deaths and births of human beings, and decides of each one’s destiny.
In conclusion, we can see that the notion of beauty varies from one person to another depending on which perspective beauty is seen from. Beauty may have different types, such as physical beauty, beauty of the soul, beauty of nature and beauty of God. However, these categories are just one of the various facets that beauty may take because we can find other people who may see beauty in grace, knowledge, success or others.

Why Do We Look Like To Delight In The Trinity

...Beauty is a fundamental part of humans’ longing. Humans crave that which is beautiful, but as Reeves addresses throughout the book, this beauty can only find its origin in the Trinity. Apart from God, beauty would not exist. It is the beauty seen in the Triune relationship, from which all beauty is informed. As Reeves runs the understanding of beauty throughout his discussion readers are able to clearly see that beauty in the world ought to point us to the beauty in God. We desire beauty because we were created to desire God, our desires have been corrupted and we seek all sorts of false beauty, when in reality, it is the beauty of our Triune God that we desire so deeply. In the excerpt focusing on Thomas Chalmers this quote gets right at this point: “We cannot choose what we love, but always love what seems desirable to us.”...

Ludovisi Gaul Killing His Wife Analysis

...One of the clearest examples of the emotion that was poured into the subject matter of Hellenistic sculpture is the Ludovisi Gaul Killing Himself and His Wife. This is a work of art that is overflowing with emotion and expression. The sorrow on the face of the female figure is palpable, her pose indicates complete abandon, and fear as she falls to her own death. The male sculpture looks defiant as he plunges a dagger into his own chest. The depiction is extremely lifelike and is noted for its extreme attention to anatomical detail and accuracy. The expressions on both faces embody the changes that occurred in Greek art, taking it from the completely unimportant archaic smile of the archaic period, to the essential gravity of the emotions in...

Socrates Rhetorical Summary

...the concept in flattering manner to develop a virtual and unreal understanding, so that the target audience can be lured into believing in the concept. In his attack on the rhetoric as unreal art, Socrates uses cosmetics as an example of rhetoric that depicts flattery. He argues that cosmetics take the form of gymnastics, and that it works in a deceitful manner through the help of lines, colors, enamels, and garments in order to create a false beauty that tends to neglect the true beauty and fitness, which is provided by the gymnastic. Therefore, he refers to cosmetics as the art of gymnastic cookery, which is the art of medicine sophistry, legislation rhetoric, or jurisprudence (Harold 4). If the body presides over itself without the guidance of the soul, then cookery, health, and medicine will mingle in indiscriminate. Socrates tends to argue that cosmetics are used to create a beauty that does not last. It is not inherent beauty of the human being, but a flattery meant to convince people that cosmetics make people to achieve beauty. In the Gorgias and Socrates discussion with other scholars, the superior nature of...

Nature's Beauty

...nature in all her abundance and variety in the future. The beauty of nature has been extolled in the works of poets and artists. When Wordsworth describes the daffodils dancing in the breeze or when our eyes alight on a painting by William Turner, our hearts are filled with an indescribable emotion. If a mere representation can move us so much, imagine the power of the real thing. If you have seen Massachusetts during fall season when the leaves turn yellow, ochre, and red, you can never forget it in your lifetime. Nature has myriad facets. It keeps changing from season to season, from minute to minute. If the sea was a bright blue in the morning, by noon it has become an emerald green hue. The colors of the sky keep changing throughout the day, from pale pink at dawn to a dazzling blue at mid morning and a bright orange by sunset and purple by twilight. Nature reflects our moods. When the sun shines, we feel happy and hopeful. When the skies cloud over and the rain falls in torrents, we feel pensive. A balmy moonlit night can awaken the lover in us. Such is the transformative power of nature’s beauty. In the movie, ‘The Silence of the Lambs’, the cannibalistic psychiatrist Hannibal Lector who is in a maximum security prison tells Clarice Starling, the FBI officer, that he wants to be transferred to a facility where he can have a room with a window that looks out on the sky. Even evil surrenders before the beauty of nature. It has been observed that patients in hospital...

Essay

...“Phenomenal Woman” uses various literary effects to express to women that it isn’t genetic beauty which is important; rather, it is inner beauty and confidence which makes a woman beautiful and the poem’s repetition of the phrase “phenomenal woman” creates an effect in the poem which emphasizes what it means to be a woman. The first stanza in “Phenomenal Woman” begins with Angelou expressing the curiosity which “pretty women” (1) have with her “beauty.” Pretty women don’t see physical beauty in her, yet they see another type of beauty portrayed and question her as to what it may be. Angelou tells them, “It’s in the reach of my arms/the span of my hips/the stride of my step/the curl of my lip/I’m a woman/phenomenally/phenomenal woman” (6-12). Through the use of metaphorical phrases, the author is expressing to the women that she has confidence and it is displayed in how she expresses her femininity. For example, in the way she walks and talks. These things make her beautiful, or a phenomenal woman. In the second stanza of the poem, Angelou depicts herself walking into a room full of men, who all bow to her upon her entrance. “I walk into a room/just as cool as you please/and to a man/the fellows stand or/fall down to their knees/then they swarm around me/a hive of honey bees” (14-20). Angelou describes how when she enters a room, she does not have to do much to show her beauty, yet it is expressed in her confidence and her overall...

Who Is Myrtle Wilson's Death In The Great Gatsby

...demise. Fitzgerald argues through this text not that the American dream is dead, but that the American dream is not something that ends well. He suggests that American dream has negative connotations like materialism and the decay of morals. Lastly the text argues that the aristocracy prevents the American dream from being fully realized. Myrtle Wilson is our first American dreamer in the text. She is introduced as “Then I heard footsteps on a stairs, and in a moment the thickish figure of a woman blocked out the light from the office door. She was in the middle thirties, and faintly stout, but she carried her surplus flesh sensuously as some women can. Her face, above a spotted dress of dark blue crepe-de-chine, contained no facet or gleam of beauty, but there was an immediately perceptible vitality about her as if the nerves of her body were continually smouldering. She smiled slowly and,...

Individuality and the Internet

...Individuality and the Internet The internet has created a world where virtually every piece of information is available on a universally accessible platform. This international community gives rise to an atmosphere where trends and styles are immediately broadcast to the world. Ideals and habits are no longer confined to certain areas but spread throughout the world rapidly. In many ways, the internet has ushered in an international age that has created uniformity in the way people dress, think, and view the world. J.S Mill discusses the idea of individuality in his book On Liberty. Mill analyzes individuality and expresses the human need for some level of eccentricity. Mill stresses the fact that individuality is one of the fundamental components of human happiness. His main point is that individuality is imperative to social and individual evolution. The internet, in many ways, brings about new ideas and introduces the public to many points of knowledge. However in the same respect the internet often detracts from a person’s individuality and originality by imposing uniformity. In this paper I will argue that Mill’s idea of individuality and its benefits to society do not coexist well in the same world as the internet. John Stuart Mill writes that individuality should be asserted in matters, “which do not primarily concern others” (Mill, 54). The only way a person can truly cultivate his or her individuality and become a more complete human is to look within him or herself...

...intertwined with one another. Art is creation, quality, realm, and appearance based on aesthetics of beauty, or out of the ordinary. Art comes in a wide variety of facets such as painting, theatre, music, dance, and other visual abstract art. With developing technology, values are changing and thus creating an increase in multiculturalism. Artwork maintains to focus on culture heritage, therefore creating an emotional approach on the viewer providing an understanding of differences. Art has a significant impact on my life especially through music and the love of tattoos. Making music involves your voice, fingers, playing an instrument, and the brain. Individuals involved in music use their ears, eyes, and tap into multiple skills others may not experience outside of music. It truly is a work of art and brings me so much joy. Being a man of many tattoos there is always argument whether tattooing is art. Tattooing is now recognized by the U.S. government as an art form and a profession. It is now that tattoo related art can be implemented in a museum, gallery, or educational institutions across the U.S.A. Tattooing has been around for years and continues to illustrate the relationship between art and American culture. Technology continues to evolve our lives and the globe that exists around us. Baroque Music

...to be discovered. Completely new styles of music and presentation combined with a newly appreciated level of exaggerated drama to bear an innovative art form: opera. The Baroque time period was also responsible for a far simpler era. There were those who saw the Baroque style as too complex and the Classical era was born. With an emphasis on the classical antiquities that made ancient Greece one of the strongest cultural influences in history, the Classical era focused on simplicity and hierarchy to produce a style still prevalent today. The Baroque style emphasizes above all else, a love of ornamentation. This love of ornamentation spawned a completely unique and incredibly influential style that focused on complexity in several facets of art and design. Multiple layers of musical instrumentation, melodies and harmonies combined to produce a polyphonic musical style. An overly exaggerated emphasis on exuberance and grandeur could easily evoke the intended emotions of the artist or composer as was seen in opera. This combination allows a person who does not understand the language of the presentation to still understand the story and emotions they were meant to. This complexity must metaphorically dance a fine line and not stray too far into extreme opulence. Too much ornamentation has the potential to present with an element of unintended confusion. This same excess of grandeur can easily alienate entire segments of a potential audience due to a lack of cultural...

Women

...Media representation of women Media have been reflectors of dominant values and work as an active agency aiming at reinforcing and strengthening dominant value structure. There is no doubt that mass media like TV, film, radio newspapers and magazines mould opinion, thinking, attitudes and behaviour. TV and films are more powerful as their reach and impact is greater than that of other media. All of these media have greater reach among men than women, but what catches the attention of the feminists and other concerned people is the unrealistic, negative portrayal of women in these media. Mass media do give coverage to women and their issues but damage done by media to women is more than the help offered to them. The role of media in the development of women and enhancement of their status in the society is very depressing. All mass media are being blamed for this. Mass media have been powerful agents of social influence but they have not been effective in portraying women in meaningful, respectable and positive manner. In 1978, a major UNESCO study on the portrayal and participation of women in the media found that the portrayal of women in the mass media globally was consistently poor. The study also confirmed that there was severe under-representation of women in the upper cadres of all media organizations, and that the average media woman earns less than her male counter-parts. Studies carried out in South Asia in 1986 confirm that women are portrayed either as docile...
