Among them, The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals is also one of the major works of Charles Darwin. This book was published in 1872 and was an astonishing bestseller. After more than 100 years, a new edition of Darwin’s masterpiece is published edited by Paul Ekman who is one of the world’s leading authorities on facial expressions. The third edition contains the changes Darwin had wanted at that time, but it doesn’t cover much of it. While reading the book, it is easy to understand why Expression causes such an impression nowadays. Self-portraits can be the complete embodiment of an artist or his or her own reflection of self. Does anyone’s self-portrait really represent a true reflection of that individual? I would have to say no. A famous painter that I have chosen to discuss the concept of self-portraits is Rembrandt. Rembrandt was- Often more concerned with character and expression than likens and public image, he scrutinized his features in the mirror, made faces at himself and cast his eyes in evocative shadow, paying scant attention to the conventional formalities of portraiture. (Sayre) How can both artists be so far apart in their renderings and what influences affected their works? Was it the time between the two artworks, cultural differences, or form? John Taylor’s illustration for Leslie’s Illustrated Gazette is more naturalistic than representational because he was focusing on what he saw in the grove at the treaty signing but ethnocentric beliefs may have caused him to make the Native-Americans look hostile in their facial expressions, with their bow and arrows at hand. He also portrays them as non-descript so you can’t tell which tribe they represent. The tipis in the back are also no-descript. Some of the children are more challenging to work with than others. Their attention spans can be short so keeping them focused and entertained can be difficult. One patient we had was a girl about age 12. While on the horse she would talk in song, in a soft tone. She loved being on the horse. When the therapist would tell her left and right she would start to respond and move the reigns. Every child has their own personalities and their own needs.
