...a country like mine, where we grow vegetables, we can be certain of their rich nutrients and the fact they are good for the health. Here, not only fruit and vegetable are quite expensive but we can’t be sure that we purchase a natural source. The organic labels and the packages are making products good looking and an instant catch for the eye. The truth is I’ve never thought in this matter before, since I am used to buy and use everything organic. The purchasing habits that my family has developed are extremely good. But is it enough? Being so narrowed in our idea of eating healthy and green labeled food, we have forgotten about many serious things. For instance, how our lifestyle affects our surroundings, why products we buy end up being a bad outcome for the planet? The answer lies in the big issue is that, as human beings, we tend to see the positive side only, the one that is convenient for us. I’ve never turned to think about how much damage was to the environment the part where we didn’t recycle. So what if me and my family have always purchased heathy and fresh organic products and produce when Macedonia and its surroundings are lands that has never implied recycling as a way in keeping the environment alive. It’s not imaginable to what extent these regions are polluted with all the amount of paper and plastic not being recycled. And the problem is not awareness. The fact that polluted air has left people walking around with masks is hint enough. The problem with these...

Waste in Government

...Jeray Perkins Waste in Government July 4, 2014 Introduction The way the government spends the tax payer’s dollars and the way that they operate using Americans tax dollars is a controversial topic in the United States. Americans have a sometimes misplaced distrust in the way our Government spends and manages money for programs. The perception of waste and governmental inefficiency has led to a call for reform in most governmental activities. While the public may believe that there is wide spread fraud and intentional waste, I have a very different view as it pertains to governmental money management. In this paper we will discuss the inefficiencies of the federal government and some of the root issues to the problem that is governmental waste. GAO Report and Overlap The United States Governmental Accountability Office release a transparent report in efforts to recognize some of the spending concerns that are currently happening across governmental offices. The dissection of these programs ranged from Agriculture to Training Employment and Education. While reading through the GAO report I found a few common themes. Duplication being at the very forefront of governmental agencies and by duplication I mean two or more departments involved with these same tasks USDA are two programs where we see some overlap in their functions. According to the GAO report the USDA is responsible for catfish but the FDA is responsible for seafood. The fact that we have two very similar agencies...

Critical Thinking Paper

...Critical thinking Paper Asking the right questions a guide to Critical Thinking   Introduction In the memorandum from Mr. Anil Ravaswami vise president of Human Resource to Cynthia Castle (CEO, CHCM) dated October 10, 2012 . Mr. Ravaswami strongly disagrees with the need for a leadership program for the company that was proposed by the director of operations Ms. Florence Forsythe. Mr. Ravaswami stated that Ms. Forsythe was not at all concerned about the company’s interest but her concerns were more of a personal agenda to discredit him personally and push the theories of the Aspen Institute. In this paper I will analyze and evaluate the business proposal by applying the 10 step model of critical thinking that was discussed in the, Asking the Right Questions (Browne & Keeley, 2012). The steps that was discussed was 1) Finding out what are the issues and the conclusions; 2) Identifying What are the reasons; 3) Identifying which words or phrases are ambiguous; 4) What are the values and descriptive assumptions; 5) Checking to see if there are any fallacies in the reasoning; 6) How good is the evidence; 7) Are there any rival causes; 8) Are the statistics Deceptive; 9) What significant information is omitted; and finally 10) what reasonable conclusions are possible. Issues and Conclusions The issue that was discussed in the Memo sent by the vise president of Human Resource[s] Mr. Anil Ravaswami dated October 10, 2012 to the CEO...

Stuff on Thesis Straight from the Book Not My Work

...Before writing a thesis statement, you must choose a subject or topic for your paper. After choosing a subject or topic, you then must go through a process of narrowing the subject. In fact, narrow the subject until you have a topic that can be treated effectively in the assigned length of your paper. In many respects, the narrower your subject, the better off you are, as long as you haven't narrowed it to a point where nothing much can be said about it. With a properly limited subject, you explore only a small part of your general subject, but you explore it thoroughly. A paper of 500 words on education, for example, is doomed to be superficial at best. The topic is way too large. It might be possible, however, to write 500 words worth reading if the topic were limited to one of your teachers, essay versus objective examinations, your reasons for attending college (narrowed down to just one reason if you have enough to say), college registration procedures, abolishing of F grades, college fraternities, physical education requirements, and so on. With a sensibly limited subject, you start to have a fighting chance of producing a good paper. You are no longer doomed to superficiality. If you write a description of one of your teachers, for example, you possess immensely more knowledge about your subject than does anyone who has not taken a course from that teacher. Certainly, you are no longer at the mercy of every thought about education that you have ever had. GENERAL SUBJECT ...

Recycling

...recycling old paper into new paper, to making an old hubcap into a decorative birdbath. In reality, recycling can get pretty complex -- how it interacts with our environment, our politics, our economy and even our own human behaviour patterns will play a major role in the future of our planet. What is Recycling? Recycling can take many forms. On a small scale, any time you find a new use for something old, you're recycling. One example is making old cereal boxes into magazine holders Recycling becomes more important on larger scales. At this level, used consumer goods are collected, converted back into raw materials and remade into new consumer products. Aluminum cans, office paper, steel from old buildings and plastic containers are all examples of materials commonly recycled in large quantities, often through municipal programs encouraging bulk household collections. It's rare for a recycled product to be exactly the same as the original material from which it was recycled. Recycled paper, for example, contains ink residue and has shorter fibers than virgin paper (paper made from wood pulp). Because of this, it may be less desirable for some purposes, such as paper used in a copy machine. When a recycled good is cheaper or weaker than the original product, it's known as down-cycling (or downstream recycling). Eventually, goods move so far down the recycling stream it isn't feasible to recycle them any further. After being recycled a few times, paper is no longer...

The Search for an Ecology Paper Topic

...The Search for an Ecology Paper Topic In the search for a paper topic that relates to Ecology, many possibilities emerged, including, of course, the popular Global Warming and Tropical Rainforest topics, but I wanted something different. Soon it was obvious there is confusion as to what Ecology really is. As our text, “Biology: A Guide to the Natural World,” points out, we should assume that many ecologists are environmentalists, but these are two very different professions. Enter “ecology” in the Google search engine, 739,000 topics related to ecology will appear! Clicking on many of these links will direct you to a Website featuring some “environmental” or “conservation” topic, not an “Ecology” topic. Many people assume that ecology and environmental conservation are one in the same and many of the Websites confirm this assumption. Ecology.com combines both ecological and environmental news and articles which only adds to the confusion; one would think a Website with this title would be an “official” Website featuring only factual information; not so, just as many other “official” sounding titles are not “official” websites! In fact, there are many college educated people, my son for example, with this same mind set. The confusion can be blamed on the media hype over the environmental movement. Not many years ago “go green” brought images of tractors, farm equipment, lawn mowers and the words “John Deere,” but today “go green” has a whole new meaning. It seems the word “green...

Nats Controversy

...Pavri Once you have selected your academic and popular sources, I want you to gather information about each side of your debate and then start organizing the various arguments. Don’t worry about choosing sources that only present one side of the argument or another. That is not the point. Many scholarly sources for example, are likely to provide you with arguments that you will use for both sides of your controversy. While you don’t have to worry about choosing the same number of “for” articles and “against” articles, it is important to make sure you have a balanced number of arguments for each side of your debate. Finally, you also don’t need to separate your popular and scholarly sources as they are likely to examine similar issues. You don’t want to be repetitive when describing various arguments, so think about a way of effectively organizing the arguments you will presenting. Your paper is essentially going to be divided in two parts. The first part will be about describing the arguments on either side of the debate. I call this the descriptive component of your paper. The second part of your paper is the analysis. You will be analyzing two things. First, I want you to compare and contrast how your topic is presented in scholarly versus popular media. Think of areas like language (simple versus complex), use of references, and length of article as a starting point for your analysis. Make sure to use examples in your analysis. For instance, if you tell me that scholarly...

Death of the Penny

...Abstract The United States has experienced several problems with the use of the one cent coin, the penny. A small value coin almost worthless to the world of goods, but rings up a price when producing one. It costs twice as much as itself to make, and four billion of them are created a year. The US government dances around this problem and should have eliminate them back in 2006 when people were melting the copper and selling it for profit. This paper states several topics of why the penny only causes harm to US citizens and the economy. The obvious solution to fix a problem like this, simply abolish the penny as US currency, and round all cash transactions to the nearest fifth cent. Death of the Penny: The Elimination of America’s One Cent Coin and its Impact on The United States Economy “I will seriously consider eliminating the penny as long as we find another place for Lincoln to land,” the support of abolishing the penny from the most powerful man in America; President, Barack Obama. For over a hundred years people have paid for everyday goods with change, or coins. As inflation in the America rises, the value of coins diminishes. (Inflation Figures). Take the penny for example; commonly known as the copper coin has hardly any copper to it. Created with ninety-seven percent zinc and only two and a half percent copper, the penny doesn’t truly stand up to its expectations. Based on the 2011 Annual Report for US Mints, the cost...

Senior Thesis - How to Improve the Environment

...be looked at more seriously in order to improve the environment. Recognizing and correcting the problem and promoting the positive aspects will ultimately improve the environment. In order to maintain a healthy environment, society must become aware of how day-to-day activities impact the environment and they also need to be ready to approach and change such lifestyles. So how can we, as individuals, improve the environment? Why When talking about environment related issues, most people just don’t care; they are only doing enough to get by for themselves. The only concerns they have are paying their bills on time, taking care of their family, keeping their job, and being happy. People are contemplating the fact that they are just one person, and the changes they make won’t make a difference so why should it matter. (Savage) If this mind set of people changes then that one person will turn it to hundreds and thousands of people and differences in the environment will start to be seen. There are multiple different reasons on why you should care about the environment and what impacts it. Approximately 40% of deaths globally are cause by pollution, and the number of humans that are diagnosed with diseases from pollution are increasing. The more we are polluting our air, water, and soil, and degrading our environment the more the population is hurting. (Cornell) This chart shows deaths due to cardiovascular disease. This chart shows deaths attributable to solid fuel use...

Recycle

...benefits to recycling aluminum and aluminum can be easily collected and reused over and over again. People need to be aware of what is happening in the environment and also be educated on what they can do to help. We need to recycle aluminum because it saves natural resources, time, money, and energy. In one year, the United States produces 160 million tons of garbage, this is enough metal to build two million automobiles, enough wood to construct a million homes, enough paper to publish all the daily newspapers in the country, enough aluminum to rebuild the entire American fleet 71 times, and would fill 11 million garbage trucks. Landfills are quickly increasing in number and size. One of the advantages of recycling is that it helps keep extra waste out of our landfills and incinerators. The sum of existing landfills is increasing because of the lack of care to help the environment. People are lazy and they cannot understand the effects of not recycling. Landfills take up space and they waste the taxpayer's dollars. In an average adult's lifetime, he or she leaves behind 90,000 lbs. of trash for the next generation and approximately 3/5 could have been recycled. Almost everything in a trash bag can be reclaimed through recycling It is easy to recycle most household products and it will only take a little of your time. More often than not, when someone is telling me a story all I can think about is that I can’t wait for them to finish so that I can tell my own story that’s not only better, but also more directly involves me. Nothing sucks more than that moment during an argument when you realize you're wrong. I don't understand the purpose of the line, "I don't need to drink to have fun." Great, no one does. But why start a fire with flint and sticks when they've invented the lighter? Have you ever been walking down the street and realized that you're going in the complete opposite direction of where you are supposed to be going? But instead of just turning a 180 and walking back in the direction from which you came, you have to first do something like check your watch or phone or make a grand arm gesture and mutter to yourself to ensure that no one in the surrounding area thinks you're crazy by randomly switching directions on the sidewalk. I totally take back all those times I didn't want to nap when I was younger. The letters T and G are very close to each other on a keyboard. This recently became all too apparent to me and consequently I will never be ending a work email with the phrase "Regards" again. ...Guidelines on Writing a Philosophy Paper Author: Jim Pryor, Princeton University [pic] Philosophical writing is different from the writing you'll be asked to do in other courses. Most of the strategies described below will also serve you well when writing for other courses, but don't automatically assume that they all will. Nor should you assume that every writing guideline you've been given by other teachers is important when you're writing a philosophy paper. Some of those guidelines are routinely violated in good philosophical prose (e.g., see the guidelines on grammar, below). A philosophy paper consists of the reasoned defense of some claim Your paper must offer an argument. It can't consist in the mere report of your opinions, nor in a mere report of the opinions of the philosophers we discuss. You have to defend the claims you make. You have to offer reasons to believe them. So you can't just say: My view is that P. You must say something like: My view is that P.
