Faith and Tradition: Maybe We Should Stop Believing and Start New Customs
In America, many believe that our country’s values, morals and roots are in organized religion, specifically Christianity. Many, in fact, would go so far as to say that a lack of “God” in our country will be our downfall, as we continue to move farther and farther away a single religious influence. What if moving more towards tolerance and the value in individual beliefs and values would make a country of stronger people? What if religious influence would, actually, be the root of our downfall? “A Prophet’s Hair”, “A Father” and “Funeral at the Traffic Lights”, suggest that it is foolish to force faith, tradition and religion and it is either harmful or insignificant to the outcome of a situation. Religion tends to, ironically, create a false sense of security or power, and alienation.
The story of “A Prophet’s Hair” revolves around a money lender who breaks his son’s legs so that they can get more money begging. In the midst of a transaction, the money lender has a prophet’s hair in his possession for a few hours and because of it he decides he needs to be religious and begins to spew hateful truths at his family. He starts to take vicious control of his loved-ones and feels as though he has a greater sense of authority. “Hashim began to gush, to spume long streams of awful truths. In horrified silence, his children heard their father turn upon his wife and reveal to her that for many years their marriage had been the worst of his afflictions”. The entering of the prophet’s hair into his life, either by holy influence or otherwise, caused him to put his family through pain and be to insensitive. Before the entrance of this hair “Hashim was fond of pointing out that while he was not a godly man he set great store by “living honorably in the world”. After he “forced his family to rise, wash...

Marriage Practices

...outsider but will always be sacred within his/her tribe. In today’s society, we tend to self-judge another’s culture marriage practices because it is not the traditional marriage that we were brought believing. Even though we have become narrow-minded towards other forms of marriage and have come to believe that any other way wrong, marriage practices will always be performed differently. While some cultures believe in arranged marriages and same sex marriages, other cultures believe in multiple marriage partners which is known as polygamy. In some types of culture, all three of these marriage practices are accepted. Because of this, we should research farther into various cultures and find out what the reason is behind performing the different martial practices that they do because marriage will still continue in several different ways. Even though traditions might be similar to a particular point, the meaning and the marriage practices behind them are very different. When we do not have the power to choose who we want our future mate to be, it’s almost like someone is invading our privacy and taking away our right for free speech. Arranged marriages is an important part of every cultural and religious practices around the world and even in the US today. Some advantages to arranged marriages is that it’s a sure thing, parental consent is assured, the marriage strengthens the couples faith and everyone who had a say in the...

...Allah clearly encourages us to as stated in the verse. One of the ways of knowing other people and races is marriage. In Quran, Allah said: O mankind, indeed we have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted. 2) Also, Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) married to different women from different races and tribes and religions. We were meant to connect, to find what makes us similar, to focus on these commonalities and appreciate the differences. Just because we are different doesn’t mean that we are any better or any worse than one another. The weakness in our ummah comes from our divisions,...

...Did You Know: The Black Nazarene The procession of the Black Nazarene is a commemoration of the wooden statue’s transfer (traslacion) from a Recollect church in Intramuros, Manila, where it was first enshrined, to St. John the Baptist Church in Quiapo, Manila, on Jan. 9, 1787. The original statue, which shows a dark-colored Christ bent under the weight of a heavy cross, was made by an unknown Mexican sculptor. It was brought to the country by Recollect friars in 1607 and was said to have survived a fire while aboard the ship. The image was charred but was preserved, which explains its color. Filipino Catholic devotees have attributed miracles and answered prayers to the Black Nazarene. Among these is the reported cleaning up of a clogged artery of a radio operator in his 60s. This reportedly happened after he prayed to the Black Nazarene on being told he had to undergo a hugely expensive bypass surgery. Devotion to the Black Nazarene was encouraged by Pope Innocent X, who issued a papal bull establishing the Confradia de Jesus Nazareno in 1650. In the 19th century, Pope Pius VII granted indulgence to people who prayed devoutly to the Black Nazarene. There are two images of the Black Nazarene in Quiapo, both hybrids of the original and the replica created by Filipino sculptor Gener Manlaqui. The one paraded every Jan. 9 has the head of the replica and the body of the original, encased in stainless steel to protect it from damage. During the procession, the image is......

...award and is solely my own work Signature of Candidate Type of Award School ___PhD_________________________________ ___Centre for Professional Ethics___________ 1   Abstract It was long assumed that both multiculturalism and feminism are connected to progressive movements and hence have comparable and compatible goals. However, both in academia and in popular media the critique on multiculturalism has grown and is often accompanied with arguments related to gender equality and/or feminism. According to political scientist Susan Moller Okin for example there are fundamental conflicts between our commitment to gender equality and the desire to respect the customs of minority cultures or religions. If we agree that women should not be disadvantaged because of their sex, she argues, we should not accept group rights that permit oppressive practices. Okin’s claims led to a complex and highly important debate both in academia and in public debates. The main aim of this thesis is to explore in depth the different discourses about multiculturalism and feminism and develop a more inclusive and nuanced...

...Barack Obama Dreams from My Father “For we are strangers before them, and sojourners, as were all our fathers. 1 CHRONICLES 29:15 PREFACE TO THE 2004 EDITION A LMOST A DECADE HAS passed since this book was first published. As I mention in the original introduction, the opportunity to write the book came while I was in law school, the result of my election as the first African-American president of the Harvard Law Review. In the wake of some modest publicity, I received an advance from a publisher and went to work with the belief that the story of my family, and my efforts to understand that story, might speak in some way to the fissures of race that have characterized the American experience, as well as the fluid state of identitythe leaps through time, the collision of cultures-that mark our modern life. Like most first-time authors, I was filled with hope and despair upon the book’s publication-hope that the book might succeed beyond my youthful dreams, despair that I had failed to say anything worth saying. The reality fell somewhere in between. The reviews were mildly favorable. People actually showed up at the readings my publisher arranged. The sales were underwhelming. And, after a few months, I went on with the business of my life, certain that my career as an author would be short-lived, but glad to have survived the process with my dignity more or less intact. I had little time for reflection over the next ten years. I ran a voter registration project in...
