How to Analyze Financial Statements

FALCON MANUFACTURING COMPANY
(Suggested Analysis)

Liquidity Ratios : 2006 2007
Current Ratio 1.5 2.33
Quick Ratio 0.88 1.42

Liquidity ratios measure the ability of the firm to meet its short term liabilities out of its current assets.

• Current ratio has increased from 1.5 to 2.33 which indicates that the liquidity position has improved in 2007.
• Quick ratio also shows an improvement in 2007 as compared to 2006.
• From the balance sheet, it can be seen that investment in current assets in 2007 has increased by 75% from 2006 whereas liabilities increased only by 12.5%. This has obviously contributed to the improvement in the liquidity ratios.
• It should also be observed that Cash has decreased from AED 900,000 in 2006 to only AED 50,000 in 2007. Similarly the majority of current assets are in the form of Accounts receivable, therefore it is important that the company collects its receivables quickly to maintain liquidity.

Asset Utilization Ratios 2006 2007
A/R turnover 6.4 times 3 times
Avg. collection period 57 days 120 days
Inventory turnover 5.1 times 4.7 times

The above ratios are a measure of how quickly the firm converts its current assets into cash.

• Both the A/R turnover and Average collection period indicate an unfavourable trend. This means that the company is taking a very long time to collect its accounts receivable.
• From the financial statements, we can see that in 2006, A/R represented 15.7% of Sales for the year but in 2007, A/R represented 33% of sales for the year.
Why? Are the customers not paying promptly? Is the company very lenient in collecting its receivables? It could also mean that the company may have given extended credit terms.

• Inventory turnover has

Ddt and Its Affects on Peregrine Falcons

...Brian Jones Melanie Raite Biology 1103 November 3, 2012 DDT and Its Effects on Peregrine Falcons The Peregrine Falcon (Falco peregrinus), or Duck Hawk, is a medium-sized raptor weighing 2 to 2 ½ pounds. These remarkable birds of prey measure 15-21 inches and have a wingspan of about 3 ½ feet. Their name, Peregrine, comes from the Latin word peregrinus, which means “to wander”. The name fits, given that they have one of the longest migrations in North America and are found on every continent besides Antarctica. Peregrine Falcons hunt pigeons, crows, waterfowl, starlings, jays, and other small to medium sized birds. They are also known to hunt for bats and other small mammals (Defenders of Wildlife). They are best known for their spectacular hunting methods in which they catch their prey mid-air. If that is not impressive enough, they do it while plunging at speeds of up to 200 miles per hour, killing or stunning its prey instantly (National Geographic). What is even more impressive than any of this is the fact that the Peregrine Falcon was on the verge of extinction and has made a remarkable comeback. The cause of their brush with extinction was the result of the use of organochlorine pesticides, mainly dichloro-diphenyl-trichloroethane (DDT) (The Santa Cruz Predatory Bird Research Group). DDT was first synthesized in 1874. However, its effectiveness as an insecticide was not discovered until 1939. This discovery was made by Dr. Paul Herman Müller of Switzerland. Müller...

The Maltese Falcon-the Roles of Gender

...The Manly Man Versus The Femme Fatale Many of the characters in The Maltese Falcon attempt to gain leverage over one another in order to achieve their goals. While the men in novel use classic male intimidation and bullying characteristics, the female characters tend to rely on more subtle womanly approaches. The women in the novel obtain what they want by using their dainty innocence and their sexuality, also known as their “feminine charm,” to seduce the male characters into cooperating with them. Both the men and the women in the novel resort to the traditional gender-based methods of influence to get what they want. The female characters in the novel are able to utilize their femininity and sexuality to influence Sam Spade and the other male characters. An example of this technique is the complex relationship between Spade and Brigid O’Shaughnessy. After Joel Cairo offers Spade five thousand dollars for the recovery of the missing falcon, Ms. O’Shaughnessy attempts to regain Spade’s loyalty with payment as well but is unable to match Cairo’s offer: “It is far more than I could ever offer you, if I must bid for your loyalty.” After Ms. O’Shaughnessy accepts that she cannot use money to reclaim Spade, she instead tries to convince him with her sex appeal: “Can I buy you with my body?” This method is proven to be effective after Spade replies that he will “think it over” (57). Ms. O’Shaughnessy’s approach in this passage clearly expresses how women in the novel...

Why Captain America: Civil War Is Hitting All the Right Notes

...Some superhero films make you sit back and appreciate what is being played out on the silver screen. Some make you sit back and grimace at the predictable plot and has-been scenarios. Some are capable of dividing opinions of loyal fans, teetering on the good and the bad. But, occasionally, one such film will come along that is less about superheroes with some human emotions, and more about humans with super abilities, forcing you to acknowledge that superheroes are people too, and say, “Now, that, was a movie.” Because at its heart, that’s what Captain America: Civil War is all about. Real people in real situations with some superhuman powers thrown in for good measure. The heart of the conflict is an ideological difference of opinion between the two sides, and in a surprising turn of events, it’s our very own law-abiding, orders-following Captain who’s opposing the decisions of the Government to pass the Sokovia Accords in the aftermath of their epic battle in Sokovia as shown in Age of Ultron. Thus, the Avengers, for the first time in Marvel history, stand divided, but it is heart-warming to see that despite it all, there exists zero animosity; it’s friends against friends, and no Accord can strain that relationship over a single night. But add to that a conspiracy involving Cap’s Achilles Heel, Bucky (played by the dashing Sebastian Stan), and you have Captain and his team rallying to protect him from being wrongfully tried for a crime he didn’t commit, turning them into...

The Rptor

...Raptors-Birds of prey Raptors are known as birds of prey. They hunt and feed on other animals. The term "raptor" is derived from the Latin word rapere (meaning to seize or take by force). These birds are characterized by keen vision that allows them to detect prey during flight and powerful talons and beaks. Many species of birds may be considered partly or exclusively predatory. However, in ornithology, the term "bird of prey" applies only to birds of the families listed below. Taken literally, the term "bird of prey" has a wide meaning that includes many birds that hunt and feed on animals and also birds that eat very small insects. In ornithology, the definition for "bird of prey" has a narrower meaning: birds that have very good eyesight for finding food, strong feet for holding food, and a strong curved beak for tearing flesh. Most birds of prey also have strong curved talons for catching or killing prey. An example of this difference in definition, the narrower definition excludes storks and gulls, which can eat quite large fish, partly because these birds catch and kill prey entirely with their beaks, and similarly bird-eating skuas, fish-eating penguins, and vertebrate-eating kookaburras are excluded. Birds of prey generally prey on vertebrates, which are usually quite large relative to the size of the bird. Most also eat carrion, at least occasionally, and vultures and condors eat carrion as their main food source. Many raptor species are considered apex predators...

The Falcon Computer

...14. A small group of managers at Falcon Computer met regularly on Wednesday mornings to develop a statement capturing what they considered to be the “Falcon culture” Their discussions were wide -ranging, covering what they thought their firm’s culture was, what it should be, and how to create it. The organisational culture statement covered such topics as treatment of customers, relations among work colleagues, preferred style of social communication, the decision-making process, and the nature of the working environment. Peter Richards read over the Falcon values statements shortly after he was hired as a software trainer. After observing managerial and employee behaviours at Falcon for a few weeks, he was struck by the wide discrepancy between the...

Greed In The Maltese Falcon

...A class that could benefit from reading The Maltese Falcon would be a Phycology class and its students. Psychology teaches you about how your brain works and why we do the things we do. In The Maltese Falcon the characters like to lie, steal, and be greedy so for a Psychology class you can do research on how continuous lying can affect your actions in the future. You can also talk about how greed affects ones emotions. The characters have different personalities which you can analyze and see if they might have a problem or disorder perhaps. There is a lot going on in this novel that has to do with the way the characters think and why they do the things they do. The Maltese Falcon revolves around lies, deception, and being greedy. Most of the characters in the book deceive other characters to get what they want. For example Brigid lies about having a sister early on in the novel in order to get Spade to help her find what ends up being the falcon. She lied about not knowing where the falcon was and who had it. Brigid O’Shaughnessy is so used to this routine that when she lies she sees nothing...

Arkansas Football Scandal

...Arkansas Football Scandal ETH 316 Arkansas Football Scandal Do winning football games trump ethics? Many Arkansas Razorbacks football fans believe so. In college football where winning is at all costs, many fans are willing to overlook the coaches indiscretions to keep him as coach. Some could care less about his infidelities and lies to maintain the winning ways. At the University of Arkansas some students and fans do not care about their coaches moral obligations so long as they win the South Eastern Conference or SEC. Head football coach Bobby Petrino was fired in April for engaging in an inappropriate relationship with a female subordinate on his staff. He wrecked his Harley Davidson motorcycle on a rural Arkansas road. The problem was his passenger Jessica Dorrell age 25 worked on his staff in recruiting and fundraising. They have both admitted to the affair. Petrino is a married father of four, while Dorrell was engaged to the Arkansas strength coach. The wreck left Petrino with four broken ribs, a cracked vertebrae and multiple scrapes and facial cuts. Neither He nor Dorrell informed the University of the Accident and actually tried to cover up the liaison with the help of a State Police officer who also does security for the football program. The layers of unethical behaviors and judgments are overwhelming to most. If you asked the Razorback fans though, you may be surprised at the feedback. Just hours before his dismissal, several Razorback fans had told USA...

Michael Vick Overview

...Throughout the research paper process I have made great strides in working to complete the material. I have not had to switch my topic as I am finding very interesting sources from different point of views on the subject. There is a great quantity of information on the web about Michael Vicks situation post, during, and before his dog fighting allegations and trial. With this said I have no trouble finding sources dealing with my topic. The sources are not just your average sources though. These sources go into great detail, even sharing the amount of money Vick lost, and is still losing, from his bankruptcy case in which he filed just months before being incarcerated. By reading multiple sources and seeing different point of views on the matter I can’t exactly say it changed my stance or outlook on the situation, but it did open my eyes. I’m not saying Michael Vick was right or didn’t deserve to go to jail, but he did not deserve to serve that long of a tenure in jail. That I do know. Not only have a considered looking at others viewpoints on the subject matter, but I’ve already made a great effort to do so. I like seeing what other great mind think about that subject of Michael Vick and dog fighting. The sides seem to be split on the image of Michael Vick though. There are many that feel Vick paid his debt to society and is a great example of redemption and that you can turn your life around. Every knows America is one of the few countries that is open to second chances. But...

Catcher in the Rye- Ducks

...Rita Acosta Advanced U.S. Literature B 26 January 2015 Krueger Catcher Essay In The Catcher In The Rye By J.D. Sallinger, a young Holden Caufield is refusing to grow up. There are many symbols of his youth throughout the book, such as his curiosity about ducks. "I was thinking about the lagoon in Central Park, down near Central Park South. I was wondering if it would be frozen over when I got home, and if it was, where did the ducks go. I was wondering where the ducks went when the lagoon got all icy and frozen over. I wondered if some guy came in a truck and took them away to a zoo or something. Or if they just flew away. (pg. 13)" Holden Caufield is a 17 year old boy who deals with the issue of growing up. Holden is at his time in age where he is forced to grow up, even though he doesn't want to. Holden has been trying to protect his innocence for quite some time, as he does not like the idea of growing up. Holden’s misunderstanding of the ducks is one example of his innocence. Knowing where ducks go during the winter is a simple fact that young children learn as they grow up. We do not know for sure how much Holden knows about the ducks, but we can conclude that this little fact, which is common knowledge, shows how Holden is protecting his innocence. Holden is trying to prevent himself from growing up by protecting himself from simple childhood facts. ""Hey, listen," I said. "You know those ducks in that lagoon right near Central Park South? Tim Tebow Controversy

...How can Tim Tebow be more controversial than Michael Vick and other NFL players with troubled pasts? Published: Tuesday, January 10, 2012, 3:17 PM     Updated: Tuesday, January 10, 2012, 3:41 PM  By Josh Folck | The Express-Times  Follow Michael Vick was convicted of federal dogfighting charges. Ben Roethlisberger was accused of sexual assaults. Ray Lewis was once charged with murder. Donte Stallworth was charged with drunken driving and manslaughter. And the list could go on. But out of those players listed above and of any other NFL player right now,Tim Tebow seems to be the most controversial one in the league right now. And exactly why is that? I'm not really sure. I guess because he is a devout Christian who mentions God during every one of his interviews. Or because he often takes a knee and does his patented "Tebowing" position in prayer during every game. But is Tebow really doing something that is unheard of in professional sports? Players have been thanking God in postgame interviews and pointing to the sky in celebration for years now. What makes what Tebow is doing so different? Even if what Tebow is doing is over the top, is it really more controversial than someone committing a crime? Vick, Roethlisberger and the rest of the NFL players with troubled pasts seem to be much less controversial than Tebow at the moment. Just looking at the situation, you have a young quarterback in Tebow who is proving many critics wrong and leading the Denver...

Falcon Vs Raven Essay

...How could the strong personalities of the falcon, wasp, and raven ever work together? With the independence of the falcon, determination of the wasp, and selfishness of the raven, this collaboration seems almost impossible. However, in a harmonious land afar off, the unification of these creatures was necessary to keep the peace. The internally-contentious Favesp is the combination of the falcon, wasp, and raven created by the angry mother nature. This story depicts the unwillingness of our world to work through our differences and what could result if we fail to do so. In Hiraeth, a land in harmony with the spirit of its life and nature, animals were beginning to dispute for the first time. In desire to be revered, the three most superior creatures, the falcon, wasp, and raven, argued over who deserved the home of Mother Tree. Because of the stubbornness of these animals, what started out as a sophisticated debate soon turned into a vicious war. Fighting to the point of destruction and murder, Hiraeth was no longer a land of serenity and peace. No, what was once a place of unity and love, was now destroyed by malicious actions preceded by ignorant desires. As Mother Nature’s grief grew as the contention did, her anger was carefully kindled towards a plan of resolution of the conflict. Condemning the greed of the animals, she cursed...
