When Barack Obama stood before a cheering crowd in his home state Illinois and announced his candidacy, no believed that this guy had any chance of winning the nomination.
Majority of Americans did not believe that the country was actually ready for an African
American president with a promise of changing the course of politics in Washington.
The son of a white American mother and a black Kenyan father, Obama grew up in
Hawaii. Leaving the state to attend college, he earned degrees from Columbia University and
Harvard Law School. Obama's father left the family when Obama was two and, after further studies at Harvard University, returned to Kenya, where he died in an automobile accident nineteen years later. After his parents divorced, Obama's mother married another foreign student at the University of Hawaii, Lolo Soetoro of Indonesia. From age six through ten, Obama lived with his mother and stepfather in Indonesia, where he attended Catholic and Muslim schools. "I was raised as an Indonesian child and a Hawaiian child and as a black child and as a white child," Obama later recalled. "And so what I benefited from is a multiplicity of cultures that all fed me."Concerned for his education, Obama's mother sent him back to Hawaii to live with her parents, Stanley and Madelyn Dunham, and to attend Hawaii's prestigious Punahou School from fifth grade through graduation from high school. While Obama was in school, she divorced
Soetoro, returned to Hawaii to study cultural anthropology at the university, and then went back to Indonesia to do field research. Living with his grandparents, Obama was a good but not outstanding student at Punahou, played varsity basketball and, as he later admitted, "dabbled in drugs and alcohol," including marijuana and cocaine. Obama left Hawaii for college, enrolling first at Occidental College in Los...

...Chapter 7&8 Midterm Oscar Rubi Burlington County College Abstract In every society there are certain minorities that struggle with certain parts of living in a complex society and being dominated by the superior. While it took many people lives of innocent and people of fame to just get some rights. African Americans struggled from the moment they arrived here as slaves to obtaining simple civil laws they deserved. At one point slavery in america was functional but soon it began violating the norms of society. Even with the fight and the push for rights for African American there is always that gap of equality and some areas the struggle still exist. The stories of African Americans are all in some way related to each other due to the nature in which they were assimilated into. They were treated as property at one point in time and nothing else yet they still tried to keep a “family” atmosphere. African Americans have made their way to freedom, but have been left with a heavy burden of their ancestor’s slavery. Would they ever be seen as anything but slaves brought unwilling from Africa to the United States to be enslaved and be servants to the White Man? Those questions can be answered by looking at the history of African Americans and how they have become great leaders in this country like our President. Today many may say we don't have slavery in some point that statement is true but to some extent it it is not. Just take into......

...Trump 1 I’ve decided to do this leadership profile assignment on the Donald Trump for several different reasons. First off real estate is my profession and it’s what I truly love and believe in. Also, I feel with the current economic situation that we are in; it would be a very interesting subject to report on. Since we are in the worst economy since the Great Depression and a terrible housing market, it would make it more interesting. However, there are some people like Donald Trump that are taking advantage of the economy and thriving and growing their business. Also, Donald has experienced his own rough times before. In the early 1990’s, he was billions upside down and on the verge of losing everything. Consequently, he worked his way out of it and has grown his business since. He has ventured into new businesses and has gone main stream into television. Since the Trump Organization operates in many different aspects of real estate including everything from: purchasing, brokering, and leasing, etc. I feel it would be excellent topic to do this assignment on. Donald has had many major accomplishments in his life and has plenty of failures as well. Most recently, he is known for his reality show “The Apprentice.” His show he is both the host and the producer. Each week contestants are given a task and if you are successful you will get to stay another week. If you team loses, one of your members will be brought back into the board room and someone will get...

Oprah Winfrey

...are ready to worship the ground over which she walks. She has lived the Great American dream, a veritable tale of rags to riches with the right amount of glamor added to it. Born in 1954 to unmarried parents, Oprah was raised by her grandmother on a farm with no indoor plumbing in Kosciusko, Mississippi. Oprah's childhood turned into a nightmare because of sexual abuse that she suffered. After suffering abuse and molestation, she ran away and was sent to a juvenile detention home at the age of 13. In 1968, at the age of 14 she gave birth to a premature baby who died soon after birth. An incident of this nature can devastate the entire life of a person. But Oprah Winfrey came out of it a stronger and fiercely determined individual. Her story is one of unrelenting focus and determination. Oprah's tryst with the world of entertainment began when at the age of three she began speaking in church. By the time she was a teenager Oprah was touring the churches of Nashville, reciting the sermons of James Weldon Johnson. Crowned Miss Fire Prevention in Nashville at 17, Winfrey visited a local radio station, where she was invited to read copy. She was so good that she was hired to read news on the air. While still in school, Oprah became the first African-American and the first woman to anchor a newscast in Nashville at WTVF-TV. After graduating from college, she moved to Baltimore to work as a reporter and co-anchor for WJZ-TV. Oprah Winfrey then moved on to a show called......

...Barack Obama Dreams from My Father “For we are strangers before them, and sojourners, as were all our fathers. 1 CHRONICLES 29:15 PREFACE TO THE 2004 EDITION A LMOST A DECADE HAS passed since this book was first published. As I mention in the original introduction, the opportunity to write the book came while I was in law school, the result of my election as the first African-American president of the Harvard Law Review. In the wake of some modest publicity, I received an advance from a publisher and went to work with the belief that the story of my family, and my efforts to understand that story, might speak in some way to the fissures of race that have characterized the American experience, as well as the fluid state of identitythe leaps through time, the collision of cultures-that mark our modern life. Like most first-time authors, I was filled with hope and despair upon the book’s publication-hope that the book might succeed beyond my youthful dreams, despair that I had failed to say anything worth saying. The reality fell somewhere in between. The reviews were mildly favorable. People actually showed up at the readings my publisher arranged. The sales were underwhelming. And, after a few months, I went on with the business of my life, certain that my career as an author would be short-lived, but glad to have survived the process with my dignity more or less intact. I had little time for reflection over the next ten years. I ran a voter registration project in...
