Family Values Paper

Family is defined differently by each individual, based on one’s personal experiences. Family is not always individuals related by blood. In health care not only do we take care of the patients, we take care of their families as well. Families defined in health care would be the support system of the individual whose health is compromised. In the health care setting family roles can defer based on the patient’s condition. In a step down unit the patients are more so stabilized, so the families play a major role in providing care, and making decisions for those patients who cannot care for themselves. As a health care provider, it is important to know and understand the role of the family system in health promotion, the concept of family in nursing practice, and application of the appropriate family nursing theory.
Family System in Health Promotion The United States Census Bureau defines family as “two or more people (one of whom is the householder) related by birth, marriage, or adoption residing in the same housing unit” (“United States Census Bureau,” 2011, para 2). The Census Bureau definition is inclusive of a variety of household structures to allow large, small, married adults with our without children, single parent, gay and lesbian, heterosexual, and adoptive families. The family plays a large role in the health of its members. According to Friedman, Bowden, and Jones (2003), “health behaviors, values, and attitudes are learned in the family” (p. 49). Families react and deal with issues related to health care based on culture and values. One basic function of the family unit is health care function, which includes health promotion and prevention (Friedman, Bowden, & Jones 2003). According to Ross, Mirowsky, & Goldsteen (1990),

...Family values paper Health begins at home, if family adapts healthy life styles, eat healthy meals, and involve exercise regime, then it benefits every member of the family. Applying this principle of family health to nursing practice, gives us a concept of family nursing. In this set up nurse develops care plan which revolves around client and his family. Involving family in care helps patient and family members bond better during the critical times and it also results in improved patient outcomes. Nurses can use multi-disciplinary team approach to educate family members and introduce them to different aspects of patient needs post discharge. Family members can be educated regarding dietary needs, swallowing and aspiration precautions, mobility issues and patient transfers, assistive devices and lastly and most importantly medication regimen. This education can be further classified into categories such as wound care, tubes and drain care. Community resources and community services need to be included in plan. Resources such as community health services and public health clinic are added value to family nursing. As these services work for not just the client but the welfare of the whole family and they help prevent hospital visits and ER visits. Family nursing is relatively new concept in patient care but it is showing growth in the patient care area. Since we have new healthcare restructuring in process, this has introduced rapid growth of managed care systems. Part of...

...Family Health Nursing and a Healthy Environment Family health nursing provides the “conceptual foundations of family nursing across the life span” (Garwick, 2002, p. 284). “The Family Health Nurse (FHN) concept was developed by the World Health Organization (WHO) in Europe in order to provide a means to strengthen family and community-oriented health services” (West and Macduff, 2006). WHO defines family health nursing as presenting a “key contribution within a multi-disciplinary team of health care professionals in the attainment of the 21 health targets” produced by the World Health Organization 21-policy outline. Family systems frequently change as the members of a family adapt to the stress that is inherent to illness and/or injury. Families adapt to the stress, making use of family resources and capabilities, but they often need help in making these adjustments (Servonsky and Gibbons, 2005). In aiding families, nurses employ care that is culturally competent care that uncovers a family’s personal story that reveals both the strengths and the deficits of a family, illuminating where they require assistance within a specific health care system (Servonsky and Gibbons, 2005). Denham (2003) points out that a great deal of nursing concentrates on the individual. However, it is the family and the home that should garner more attention from healthcare professionals because it is within the home "where health is learned, lived, and experienced),” as well as being the "niche...

...3. Why haven’t other food service providers copied Calveta’s approach? The reason why haven’t other food service providers copied Calveta’s approach this is because Calveta use differentiation focus approach for their business and this approach make other food service difficult to copy their operation. First reason is because most of the competitors might have not started as a traditional family company. As we know Calveta Dining Services was built on Antonio Calveta’s passion for food and traditional family values. Calveta Dining Services had their own family recipes and it difficult for other food service copy Calveta’s approach. The other one, it is too expensive for competitors to imitated calveta’s approach. This is because base on Calveta’s third goal is related to the innovation, which is to provide more personalized service to bedridden residents, “At Your Service” a catering program that allowed residents to pre-order their meals for the next day. Calveta staff delivered menus each morning and returned early afternoon to collect residents’ selections, which they submitted to the kitchen via personal digital assistant (PDA). American Family Values Essay

...Dexter Downlow Professor Miteechur English Comp II February 10, 2015 American Family Values In the article, “Family Values,” Richard Rodriguez states his view on the positive affect of homosexuality on family values in America. He questions the values that the media and politicians claim Americans hold and intrigues the reader to decide whether the United States values the family at all. With the traditional family dynamic changing every day, so does the perspective of right and wrong. The media, however, is quick to defend the sanctity of the stereotypical family and chastises anything that contradicts that ideal. The things one values changes with age and are shaped through personal experience and relationships made throughout life. This individual moral development should be promoted instead of criticized. This country was founded on the idea of individual rights. However, America is always forcing it’s ideals on others. The United States would be a more unified and progressive place if its citizens embraced the idea of tolerance and valued the diversity that make the people of this country great instead of demonizing what doesn’t fit the stereotypical image of the American family. The United States is seen as the “Land of Opportunity.” People have come from all over the world to give their family a chance at the American Dream. This nation was created by people who believed in the idea of a better life for their children. But what is the American Dream and why was...

(p.99) David Kupelian. Marketing Evil is a must read for those wishing to understand the culture war that the left has declared on American institutions, values, and ethics. Kupelian, with a calm, steady and patient hand, exposes the left as master marketers’ selling an agenda of ever increasing recklessness and corruption as a designer substitute intended for classical American ordered liberty. His chapter on the three step process (desensitize, jam, and convert) devised by sodomites to sell their spectacular species of wickedness to main street America is worth the whole price of the book. Chapters detailing the rotting corruption of the liberal education establishment, showing the manifest moral bankruptcy of modern feminism, and exposing the blood thirsty, predatory nature of the pro-abortion movement give a chilling glimpse into the cynical techniques used by the left to manipulate people into waging war against their own enlightened self interests. There is a chapter written on "Media Matrix" which is nothing short of brilliant. Kuplelian pulls back the curtain and exposes the wizards pulling the...

The Rhetorical Analysis of Heather Boushey’s “Values Begin at Home, but Who’s Home?"

...Rhetorical Analysis of Heather Boushey’s “Values Begin at Home, but Who’s Home?" (In the Struggle to Balance Work and Family, Work is Winning) In Heather Boushey’s article on The American Prospect 2007 is a special report titled “Values Begin at Home, but Who’s Home?” This article reflects America’s current family values. This is an older, but effective report. Heather Boushey was formerly a Senior Economist with the United States Congress Joint Economic Committee and before that, with the Center for Economic and Policy Research and the Economic Policy Institute. She has testified before the U.S. Congress and authored numerous reports and commentaries on issues affecting working families. “Heather Boushey.” Wikipedia: The Free Encyclopedia. Wikimedia Foundation, Inc. 13 July 2015. Web. 29 September 2015.” In this article Boushey argues that work has been winning the work/life battle- beginning with Mothers working outside of the home. Boushey also uses her skills as a former Senior Economist, to hone in on statistical data to prove the decline in family values, since Mother’s began working outside of the home. Heather Boushey article serves a dual purpose- or kairos. Boushey wrote this article stating her negative opinion toward today’s economy and how it affects family values. First, Boushey believes that mothers leaving the home to join the workforce has a negative effect on the well-being of our families and our family values, and secondly persuading us to measure how...

Decreasing Women's Taxes

...with their idea after reading their article and analyzing their proposal. I found myself with resistance and disagreements instead. Speaking as an American, I do not believe that their ideas would benefit our country. It would cause problems and raise issues instead. Their idea would hurt America’s traditional family values, business’ hiring policies and society’s peace. Family traditional values would be in stake. Mothers who could afford to stay home and raise their children by themselves are considered blessed. The idea of using a tax break to motivate mothers to go to work, and send their children to a Day Care, which will be women who joined the work force because of the tax break, is a ridiculous idea. Why have someone else be with your children if you could do it yourself? The American children are the future leaders of America. American stay home mothers have more advantages in raising their children. They have the opportunity to monitor their children’s physical health, mental health and spiritual health. Therefore, if a stay-home mother is being motivated by a tax break to go to work and send off their children to a Day Care, the traditional values that the mother would provide will decrease. Businesses will benefit from the idea of hiring more women than men since businesses will pay less Payroll taxes. More women would be hired. However, it will cause a silent...

...talking box in one’s living room has assumed the overpowering role it plays today as a result of the weakness of society. This may seem like a negative view but a society’s strength is based on the relationships between people and when so much time is spent away from others and together with the media, the actions that take place are often times a reflection of what television presents. In President Clinton’s speech, he brings forth this very point and he acknowledges the family’s increasing weakness and calls on all people to bring back the values of the past and stop the media from playing such a huge role in our community. The overwhelming influence of the media is a constant threat to the maintenance of traditional family values and to the protection of our children’s future. Nevertheless, television cannot be changed for it is too big and powerful but compromises can be made that can strengthen society and help keep certain values protected. Over the past decades, people have less and less time in their hands due to careers, divorces and the constant struggle for success. This unfortunately, is resulting in parents spending less time with their children, which is an important responsibility that no one or nothing can replace. President Clinton said, “television… may be the third parent, but it can’t be the first or the second”(Clinton, p.173). The focus on “parental responsibility”(Clinton, p.174) is what is important and parents must ensure that their children are...

...Calveta Dining Services, Inc. was a $2 billion, privately held firm that provided food services to almost 1000 senior living facilities (SLF’s) in the United States. Antonio Calveta, the founder of Calveta Dining retired in 2007 after 35 years of leadership and he named his eldest son Frank as the new CEO and told him to double the company’s revenues within a space of 5 years. The dilemma that Frank was facing was that even after 2 years into this job of his he did not have any credible strategies to fulfill his father’s promise or to attain aggressive growth as his father wanted. Calveta Dining Services owed its success to Antonio Calveta’s passion for food, traditional family values and the customized services they offered to the SLF residents. Frank was named CEO of the company over his other siblings including his sister Jennifer Calveta who was more suited for the job, now Frank was left with the option of expanding their business by acquiring Great South West Dining (GSD) or to enter into the hospital segment and diversify their business and at least try and come close to meeting his promise to his father. Analysis The United States Census Bureau’s survey showed that only 25% of the total SLF’s in USA had contracted to food services, this survey alone shows that there is a great potential for growth in the SLF’s segment and therefore it would have been meaningful for Frank to buy Great South West Dining but the eye popping debt figures that came before him alone are...
