Fanfiction is a Creative Platform for Writers

At first glance, defining fanfiction is not as easy as it seems. Fanfiction in general refers to a textual output published by majority of the writers online; these textual outputs are based, derived or inspired from films, famous personalities, though majority of the fanfiction published are from well known novels. Fanfiction writing is identified by some as an unofficial and unauthorized activity; in addition, fanfiction is not professionally edited or published. Fanfiction writing has become widespread since the introduction of the World Wide Web, hence, the fanfiction that once started as an underground recreation is now an activity hard to ignore. Legitimate authors and copyright holders still feel indifferent with fanfiction writing. Some authors oppose fanfiction for personal reasons, or simply they don’t want their material to be derived for other people’s purposes. Copyright holders on the other hand wanted to re-emphasize the copyright laws. Amidst the different perceptions and conceptions regarding fanfiction, people should have the liberty to write fanfiction, because it is an opportunity for enthusiastic writers to develop their writing abilities, it is an outlet for writers to explore endless possibilities in creating derived compositions, and lastly it is an activity to simply enjoy oneself considering it is a non-profit that brings forth intercommunication within a certain fandom.

Morrison (2012) states in The Guardian that fanfiction officially started, in the modern times, during the mid 50’s and 60’s with the growth of television expanding, more people wanted to create “what-if” stories with their favourite characters through writing. Fanfiction was reported to officially start at the modern times when the popular dystopian series Star Trek began in the 60’s. “Sci-fi” lovers brought their compositions to conventions and sold them to their specific fandoms. Slash fanfiction was a term to describe the fanfiction genre based on Captain Kirk and Spock relationship from Star Trek. The writing of slash fanfiction was favoured by the female mass. Star Trek's reputation remained significant as the entertainment industry paved way to new television shows, movies and books. According to Schaffner (2009), fanfiction are stories ripped off from other people's work, so fanfiction is a free form, innovatory or derivative textual work that fanfiction practitioners publish online. In simplest terms, fanfiction is another way of producing fiction from others. Just like Gregory Maguire the author of the bestselling novel Wicked was based from L. Frank Baum’s “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” (Alter, 2012). Alter (2012) writes in her article that fan fiction is still a sensitive subject for writers and publishers; while some see it as free marketing and others regard it as a derivative dreck at best and copyright infringement at worst. According to the Philippine Copyright Law or RA 8293 of 1997:
“Collections of literary, scholarly or artistic works, and compilations of data and other materials which are original by reason of the selection or coordination or arrangement of their contents” (RA 8293, Section 173.1, 1997).
This section declares derivative works as “new works”, but as long as it does not violate the copyright protection of the original work like publishing or reproducing the original work. To begin with, writing fanfiction is an opportunity for enthusiastic writers to develop their writing abilities. According to Buroker (2013) an official indie fantasy author, who herself started off with a fascination with the Star Trek series began to write at a young age with a young audience, is now the author of a book entitled Forged In Blood, now available in the Amazon ebook store. Cubbison (2011) a student contributor for the site Transformative Works and Cultures, writes in her article about Rebecca W. Black, a second language acquisition researcher who brought about a section in fanfiction.net about an anime Card Captor Sakura written by English Language Learners for a Native English audience to give feedbacks in their writing. In addition, Meg Cabot, The Princess Diaries bestselling author posts on her fanfiction policy page that she herself started out at a young age writing about Star Wars. She describes writing fanfiction as a good starting point to enhance her writing style and a good way to improve story telling techniques. She added in the policy page a message for writers saying:
"I think writing fanfiction is a good way for new writers to learn to tell a story" (The Daily Dot, 2012). In this light, we could say that the abovementioned writers started off fully inspired and passionate, and they used constructive and supportive feedback as a tool to improve or develop their writing style. Fanfiction is also an outlet for writers to explore endless possibilities in creating derived compositions. Black (2012) a doctoral candidate at the University of Wisconsin at Madison, states that fanfiction writing is helping students to develop believable characters or complex plots, for instance a young girl from the UK created a younger sibling for the anime character Sakura Kinomoto. Fanfiction was also described as a tool for correcting fictional justices perpetrated by the sources materials’ authors. For example, a doctor accused of criminal negligence on an episode of Chicago Hope had been exogenerated within the narratives of many Chicago Hope communities (Business/Financial Desk, 1997). Lastly, the famous series of Fifty Shades of Grey written by EL James started as a Twilight fan fiction (Eanet, 2012). The popularity of the Fifty Shades of Grey brought the attention of some readers because of the copyright issues relating to it. However, this statement provided by Amanda Hayward, CEO of The Writer’s Coffee Shop, explains further the situation, she states that:
“James's book bore very little resemblance to Twilight, even though the story began as fan fiction. Essentially only the character's names were borrowed, the setting, plot, abilities, relationship structure, feel and focus of the story were original. Twilight and Fifty Shades Trilogy are worlds apart; new readers are totally surprised it was ever a Twilight fan fiction story. We see it in the reviews over and over again” (Deahl, 2012). So, if some people think that fanfiction would be a dreck output, it would rather be a bigoted statement, because fanfiction is perhaps a creative tool to freely express endless possibilities. Fanfiction is also an activity to enjoy oneself, considering it is a non-profit activity that brings forth intercommunication within a certain fandom. As McGuinness (2013) a writer for Metro UK, included in his article statistical information about the website OneDirectionFanFiction.com, which has over 365,000 members and more than 43,500 stories about the famous boy band and this is being enjoyed by teenage girls who write and read about them. Conventions like Kumoricon is dedicated for celebrating and gathering Japanese animation and culture lovers, included in their most popular events is fanfiction writing, also with 5,300 attendees dressed up in their favourite anime costume (Kern, The Columbian, 2013). Lastly, Alter (2012) a reporter for the Wall Street Journal, fanfiction writers get comments and fast feedbacks from their readers through fanfiction online communities that provides free membership like fanfiction.net. When writers upload their works online, everyone who reads it are allowed to give their comments or suggestions. In this light fanfiction led to the rise of more online communities wherein aspiring writers with the same interests meet up and exchange ideas and opinions with each other. Lastly, in April 2000, Anne Rice expresses her view regarding fanfiction in her website stating “I do not allow fanfiction... It upsets me terribly to even think about fanfiction with my characters. It is absolutely essential that you respect my wishes" (Rice, 2010, para.5). This is why sometimes fanfiction may affect an author’s capability to produce their own stories. The growth of fanfiction writing and the fanfiction community has definitely reached the mainstream media. For this reason, fanfiction activity online may no longer be ignored or considered as an underground activity. Majority of the fans may see the popularity of fanfiction both as bad and good. The positive side of the growth of fanfiction is that fanfiction practitioners are able to receive feedback from their readers. As we have seen, writing fanfiction has an immense advantage. It improves one’s writing style; it is a creative platform for readers to incorporate original work through limitless recreation, and it is an activity for personal or social enjoyment. As oppose to the previous statement, copyright holders or authors as mentioned before are still in opposition with fanfiction writing. What they fail to realize is that: social media or the whole realm of the World Wide Web is progressing at such pace that the copyright laws established in the past are “dying” or left behind. In addition, fanfiction practitioners believe that fanfiction writing is in line with Freedom of Speech through derivative composition; therefore writers are considering the fact that the copyright law should be relevant and evolve in modern society. Fanfiction practitioners remain the same in their attitude: passionate and optimistic. The existence of the fanfiction community remains the same.

...Chapter 1 The Problem and Its Background This section discusses the background of the thesis research entitled. “--”. The general and specific problems, significance of the study, scope and limitation, the framework of the study, and definition of terms used are presented here I. Introduction Fan fiction also known as, fanfiction, fanfic, FF, or fic is a defined term for fan labor about stories of characters or simply fictional characters and settings written by fans of the original work, rather than by the original creator. Works of fan fiction are rarely commissioned or approved by the original work's owner, creator, or publisher; also, they are almost never professionally published. Because of this, many fanfics written often contain a disclaimer stating that the creator of the fanfic owns none of the characters. Fan fiction, therefore, is defined by being both related to its subject's canonical fictional universe and simultaneously existing outside the canon of that universe. Most fan fiction writers assume that their work is read primarily by other fans, and therefore tend to presume that their readers have knowledge of the canon universe (created by a professional writer) in which their works are based. Fan fiction, as the name suggests are works of fiction created by fans. Ranging from books to movies, eager aficionados re-create scenes and plots to fit their own fancy. While seemingly trite to some critics, the fan fiction community is a large and supportive...

Fanfiction Definition

...Fanfiction No matter what fandom you’re in, chances are there is fanfiction. Did I hear you say you want to learn how to write fanfiction? Fantastic! Let’s start with the types of fanfiction. There are many different types; some people will choose to write an original story about original character. For instance, after people read a book or watch a movie they may want to be a character. And where most of us wouldn’t last five minutes in a fictional world, you can still write a character that is inspired by you to have action filled adventures. Another way to write fanfiction is by writing an original story with already created characters. Send your favorite character on an adventure, develop a minor character’s story more or even form...

Fanfiction In Scandal

...Within the past decade, fanfiction has enabled community members to put their own ideas down on ‘paper’ for the world to read, comment on, and contribute to. Fanfiction is defined as stories written by members of a fandom that base themselves on a plot, canon, or different works that take the current story on a new path (Thomas, 2011). The most important part of fanfiction, however, is the interaction with the storylines and the dominant ideology. “While activities of fans may take many forms, writing stories deriving from one or more source texts has long been the most popular way of concretizing and disseminating their passion for a particular fictional universe” (Thomas, 2011). This freedom that community members within a fandom have to connect, create, and discuss are what makes fandom such a strong force in the digital world. The online world has opened up doors for fans no matter what age they are, what country they live in, or how...

Warrior Fanfiction

...When I was little, I was obsessed with this ongoing series called “Warriors”. It’s a 36 book series about cats who live in the wild. Now, I know, not much to be enchanted with, but I was 7 and it was the first time I hadn’t gotten bored with a book and quit halfway through. From 3rd to 7th grade, I dutifully read each book and waited with baited breath for the last official book in the series, when Firestar (the main character) would finally kill the ghost of his arch nemesis Tigerstar, therefor bringing peace to the clans. I waited for that battle for nearly 5 years. 5 years of my childhood revolved around that single, epic conclusion. In that time, I expanded my reading and actually started writing Warrior fanfiction before fanfiction became. I grew out of the series eventually, but I still read the last book when it came out. Frankly, I found the last book wanting (and they killed Firestar. The nerve. The sheer gall), but I found that I didn’t truly mind. I had grown up (a little), and had already found dozens of book series that I liked more. They were more challenging with advanced plotlines and better character development, and I never would have read them if I hadn’t fallen in love with reading through Warriors. In this case, my journey was more important than my destination. In fact, I find that to be true in most...

...A Thousand Years Foreword: DaeHyun As I watch my son finish his piano piece and hear all the cheers around after he played, I can't help but smile. My son is strong, after all the struggles we've been through. My son keeps on dreaming; he never fails to give me hope. "Dad, did you see that?! I didn't screw up! I did well!" DaeYeol said as he hugged me. If only MinAh could witness how his son played, she may be in tears because of happiness. She was the one who taught him how to play after all. “You did well? My son did great!” I carried him and asked him where he wants to eat. “Take me to the steak house Dad. I miss the three of us eating there.” “And let’s go to the flower shop later before we visit Mom.” It’s been three months and she’s still sleeping. After a month of coma, YongGuk asked me if I want to remove her life support and I honestly want to say yes. Ever since the accident, I find it hard to look at her used-to-be full of life face. I can feel her pain; each and every day feels like years of waiting. “I’m just giving you an option DaeHyun. I’m not forcing if you don’t want to.” YongGuk said apologetically. Just then when I’m about to clarify the details about MinAh’s situation, DaeYeol ran towards me panting, “Mom just held my hand! She held my hand Dad! Mom is awake!” We ran to her room and YongGuk summoned some nurses to check MinAh. It was false alarm. He said that a person in such state can still feel, they can’t just talk...

Suing the Sues

...Mackenzie Timson EWC4U/Ca Mr. Marando 28/02/14 Suing the Sues By Mackenzie Timson There are at least two things you can always be certain of when it comes to a Mary Sue: one, she is dang good looking, and two, you hate her guts. About now, many people might be asking, “What is a Mary Sue?” Well, esteemed audience, a Mary Sue is, in every sense of the word, a perfect heroine, whom you hate solely for the way she is written. She’s kind, gentle, funny, and undyingly selfless, yet she can kick the butt of any and every evil villain in existence…somehow. Let’s not forget that she’s a genius, and gets the highest grades in every single one of her classes (because she’s probably between 13 and 18…seriously, almost every single time!). And she does all this without even getting a tangle in her super perfect hair. Of course, the question to ask now is, “Why is that a bad thing? Don’t you think she’s really cool?” Of course I think she’s cool. I mean, why wouldn’t I? Did you see what was written before? That is the epitome of awesomeness. But let me ask you a question in return: Have you ever encountered a person that perfect? No, because they don’t exist. In real life people are rude and lazy, and sometimes stupid. A Mary Sue is the exact opposite of that, and this presents a few problems. To start, since she’s so much “better” than pretty much every human being on the face of the planet, how on earth could any reader relate to her? Characters are written so that you can relate...

Boys Love Manga Research Paper

...boys' love manga rather than the heterosexual shoujo genre or the female counterparts of the boys' love genre, yuri and shoujo-ai? The most prominent reason, in my opinion, is the absence of the female identity within the relationship dynamics between the protagonists of boys' love manga. More often than not, the boys' love manga involves sexual activity between the male characters, varying from kissing to sexual intercourse. By depriving the romantic and sexual relationships of females, the fujoshi is able to explore the sexual aspects of a relationship without any association with the characters of the story since the characters are males. Hinton (2006) reinforces this point in her study of slash fanfiction, the Western counterpart to boys' love, as she illustrates that "Slash fanfiction also provides women with a new option for sexual exploration without the objectification of women". Without the implication of female gendered roles in a relationship, fujoshi are free of the embarrassment or disgust that may arise when females encounter portrayal of girls as sexual objects in conventional heterosexual relationships. Ramsdell (1999, 5) highlights that romance fiction is "written in such a way as to provide the reader with some degree of vicarious emotional participation in the courtship process."The lack of female presence in boys' love manga, however, leads to an inability of female readers to establish an emotional connection with the male homosexual relationship. How, then,...

Why Draco Malfoy Is a Great Antagonist

...Abstract: I was inspired to write this piece after reading too many fanfictions that start out great about the years right after the war, and then become unenjoyable as soon as they mention something about how Draco and the Malfoys are living terrible lives or plotting the rise of the next "Dark Lord." I feel like these people have completely missed Rowling's point in creating such a rich and deep antagonist in the Harry Potter series. Personally, Harry, Ron, and Hermione are the least likable characters in the series, because they were the hardest to relate to. They were too simple. Sure, they had some decisions to make, but really, all along, we knew they were the "good" guys and there was never any doubt as to whether they could be "bad." The major decision of the series, whether to be for or against Voldemort, was already made for them. Hermione was Muggle-born, Ron was from a family of well-known "blood traitors," and Harry's parents had been killed by Voldemort. For them, the only decision was whether they should react actively or passively to the threat Voldemort posed. Since they were all in Gryffindor, the outcome was already obvious. In real life, decisions are rarely so simple. This is where Draco Malfoy comes in. Book I: I'd like to think that if Harry hadn't so rudely rebuffed Malfoy's offer of friendship, perhaps Draco would never have become a Death Eater. Sure, Draco was very unpleasant because he sounded snobby and looked down on Hagrid that day in...
