Fast-Food and Obesity Fast-food chain’s have been facing lawsuits in the last couple years like the one two New York teenagers filed against McDonald’s accusing it of failing to provide necessary information about health risk associated with its meals. As many Americans consume Fast-food and spend more money in Fast-food restaurants and less in grocery stores, nutrition and health advocates have become concerned about American’s health and nutrition. Knowing the number of calories and the amount of fat and salt in the Fast-food and knowing the dangerous effects of the Fast-food, people should decide which item are better choice to plan a convenient healthful diet and take action. As Americans lives become more hectic they have less time to select, prepare and eat food, so they switch to plan B without any thinking. Fast-food attracts most American’s because they are widely available and inexpensive .Eric Schlosser has noted “That 70 percent of the fast food stopovers are “Impetuous” done with little thought at the tern of the moment”.
These stopovers are overflowing with a high number of calories. These great numbers of calories consumed break the of energy balance where the calories taken in eating Fast-food are greater than the calories used during physical activities. This causes a serious problem which is obesity. As Surgeon General David Satcher pointed out, “People eat more calories … than they work off”. The numbers of obese people have been increasing rapidly from 1970s, where the last obesity static showed that 58 Million Overweight; 40 Million Obese; 3 Million morbidly Obese. (Obesity statistics) from that we conclude that almost half of Americans if not more are overweight or obese, which is a serious problem. Furthermore, the Surgeon General confirms that being overweight, particularly being obese, is linked with a wide variety

...Fast food is affordable; being able to upsize a meal for a very minimal fee has made many our kids' gluttons indeed. Good healthful foods cost more money and take more time to prepare, for that reason, In our fast food society, it is often much easier to drive through a McDonald's than it is to cook a meal and eat it. Would you rather get a few vegetables from the market or a whole meal including: four tacos, a soda, and a hamburger for the same price? Fast food meals are not only convenient, they are often very cheap. The fact that fast food is cheap and quick is no coincidence. It is hard to avoid being drowned into the world of fast food. For instance, the ingredients on salty French fires dry you mouth out, so a large coke is necessary, too. As we can see, the fast food companies have everything so maliciously prepare, so we as the parents buy their products almost by instinct. Currently, with the strict economic times diner at fast food restaurant may even cost less than preparing dinner at home. Although, not all people think alike, some of them will probably dispute my claim arguing that we live in a busy life and that we are always on the go, but do not allow obesity to spread in your home. Take responsibility and change your life style in order for kids to have a healthier future. This is a valid reason to blame fast food chains for obesity. Unfortunately, cheaper foods are easier to acquire but they lack of nutritional values and are high in calories and fat. Controlling...

People eat at fast food restaurant because it is convenient, cheap, tasty and quick. We no longer live in the good old days when women would stay home to cook, clean, and take care of the kids. Women have invaded the work industry by taking over jobs that in the past only men would have, and now share those jobs with men. Nowadays, most of the women are really busy to go for grocery shopping, come back home, unpack the food, and then cook it; so they prefer to go to fast food restaurant like McDonald’s. Many families are choosing fast food restaurants instead of fancy restaurants in this bad economy situation, because fancy restaurants charge much more money than fast food and people would rather eat at those places with family only on special occasions. However parents know that the fast food doesn’t have good nutrition balance for their children. In addition, some people who don’t have families and they live by themselves visit fast food because of their busy schedule. They are too busy to cook. ...pricing promotions, deterring new players from entering the marketplace. New entrants lack economies of scale, which existing chains have developed over time, and utilise to remain competitive in this low-margin, high-turnover industry. However, social media websites have evened the playing field in terms of marketing communications; they allow firms to efficiently communicate their message inexpensively. Initial capital outlay and fixed costs are low, encouraging new entrants (Datamonitor, 2012). Threat of Substitutions – Moderate Substitutes are readily available: food can be purchased almost anywhere, through foodservice or retail. However, convenience is the value-adding component of the service which reduces the threat of substitutes. Consumers can cook at home cheaply, but this lacks the convenience element which people require nowadays. Ready-meals are therefore a more substantial threat, competing with fast-food on price as well as convenience (Datamonitor, 2012). If you are ‘on-the-go’ however, without access to a microwave, QSRs are almost uncontested if you want a hot meal in a short timeframe. With many differentiated players...

Fast Food or Fat Food

...Fast food restaurants are everywhere in today’s society. They are found in hospitals, attached to fueling stations, in grocery stores, and inside major sports complexes (such as Great American Ball Park). With the many locations of these restaurants, the question must be raised… are fast food restaurants making people fat? That question can be answered with a resounding yes! In 1968, McDonalds was operating 1,000 restaurants (Schlosser 3); Taco Bell was just getting started and Wendy’s opened its first restaurant in 1969 (About Wendy's). According to Pearson Education’s Info Please website, 13.3% of adults were obese in the 1960s (Info Please). Today, 35.5% of people are obese (Flagel et al. 491). That’s an increase of 22.2%. In the 1970s, Americans spent 6 billion on fast food (Schlosser 3). In the year 2000 alone, Americans spent more than 110 billion (Schlosser 3). Today, there are over 50,000 fast food chains in America according to Google Maps. What is obesity and why is it a problem? Tabors Cyclopedic Medical Dictionary defines obesity as “an unhealthy accumulation of body fat” (Tabors Cyclopedic Medical Dictionary 1504). Obesity is clinically manifested (diagnosed) when the body mass index is ≥30 kg/m2 (Lewis et al. 2: 1035). Obesity is a problem because not only does it put more strain on the person during physical activity, but it also leads to decreased lung volumes from the heavy abdominal area placing pressure on the diaphragm (Potter et al. 826). ...

Fast food restaurants make sure that they use toys that are popular at the time to market to children so that they will want to get the happy meal with the toy like a doll or an action figure. If a new movie is coming out then the fast food restaurants make sure they get the toys for that movie. They have both girls and boys toys. Fast food restaurants also like to use flashy ads to draw kids to want their food. Over 10 billion dollars are spent on advertising to children. Fast food places need to cut back on the advertising would be very beneficial. They know that children are a big influence on what their parent buy for food. ...Burger King The first Burger King was called Insta Burger King, created on July 28th, 1953 in Jacksonville, Florida. The founders were Keith J. Kramer and Mathew Burns. This partnership was started in 1952 with Mathew Burns asking his stepson, Keith J. Kramer to go into business with him. At that time Keith owned a drive-in restaurant in Daytona Beach, Florida. Keith went out to San Bernardino, California to visit a McDonald’s. While in California, Mathew and Keith obtained the rights for Marvel Insta-Machines from a man named George Read. One Insta-Machine made milkshakes, while the other was an Insta- Broiler that cooked 12 hamburger patties in a wire basket. The hamburger patties cooked on both sides at the same time. In an hour the Insta-Broiler could cook 400 hamburgers. So in 1953 Keith opened the Insta-Burger King in Jacksonville, Florida selling at 18 cents each. It was a success. Two other people helped in the franchise, James McLamore and David R. Edgerton. James and David opened a couple of more Insta Burger Kings in Miami, Florida in 1954. They did not use the Insta-Broiler to cook hamburger patties; they created a flame broiler, which made Burger King more popular. They also created “The Whopper” that was sold for 37 cents each.
