Fatima Al-Fihri, a Muslim woman, established the world's first university, Al-Qarawiyyin Mosque and University. In the early ninth century, Fatima’s family migrated from Qayrawan in present day Tunisia to Fez, Morocco. After a rough start, her father, Mohamad bin Abdullah Al-Fihri, became a wealthy and successful businessman. After her husband, father, and brother died in short successions, Fatima and her only other sibling, Mariam, received an inheritance from their father. They had a good education and decided to dedicate their wealth to benefit their community.
