COURSE REQUIREMENTS

Course Description: A course designed to enhance reading, writing, research, and critical thinking skills directed toward literary analysis. Prerequisite: English 101.

Required Texts:

• Backpack Literature: An Intro to Fiction, Poetry, Drama, and Writing, X.J. Kennedy and Dana Gioia, eds., 4th ed. • Aaron, Jane E. LB Brief. 4th ed., Boston: Longman, 2010.

Learning Outcomes: Goals: English 102 is designed to “enhance writing, research, and reading skills directed toward literary analysis.” Therefore, the student will learn to read carefully and critically by analyzing the elements of literature—plot, theme, characterization, etc. through class discussion, short papers and research. Since analysis is key to this course, class participation is imperative.

Expectations of Students:

Students are expected to participate in all phases of the class, including discussions, both in class and on the Bd discussion board. Required readings must be completed before class. Homework and other assignments are due on the dates noted in the "Assignments" of Blackboard. Specific pages and due dates will be posted there.

All students are subject to the academic integrity and behavioral expectations of the University.

Formatting Requirements: All papers are to be written in MLA format using Microsoft Word.

Grading Criteria: Submission of all graded items is required to pass the course. Grades and Course Requirements: Papers, tests, exercises, Discussion Board assignments, and final exam will be graded in percentages equaling 1000 points. At the end of the term all grades will be added and weighted as follows:

Major papers (2) (40%) Final Exam (20%) Discussion Board (20%) Class Participation/in-class work (20%)

Papers: All papers should be written in standard MLA form and be readable by Microsoft “Word.” At least three papers, two short (approx. two typed pages) and one in-depth (approx. three to four pages) will be required. Several short writing assignments may be done in class. After the diagnostic given during the first class, paper length requirements may be lengthened.

Due Dates for Assignments: Because we are a blended class, assignments will be due on line, for the most part. ASSIGNMENTS WILL BE DUE BY MONDAY NIGHT AT MIDNIGHT. Links in your Discussion Board will be removed at that time, as will your paper links.

Late work: A grade will be lowered 10 points per class for late papers. Missed quizzes or tests will be made up at the discretion of the instructor. If at any time a student has a problem with an assignment or with attendance, he/she should call me at once. Essays more than two classes late will not be accepted. To pass the course, a student must turn in all assigned papers.

Campbell University’s Statement of Purpose:

Campbell University is a university of the liberal arts, sciences, and professions which are committed to helping students develop an integrated Christian personality characterized by a wholeness that includes: a method of critical judgment; an appreciation of our intellectual, cultural, and religious heritage; and a sensitive awareness of the world and society in which they live and work with persons.

Campbell University is a Baptist university affiliated with the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina. Both in and out of the classroom, the University endeavors to present Christian principles to students and to foster their application to daily life.

This course is consistent with the aforementioned purpose and provides students a positive environment for learning.
ADA Statement: Students with documented disabilities who desire modifications or accommodations should contact the Office of Student Support Services located in the University’s Hight House.
Attendance: Campbell’s attendance policy states that regular attendance is mandatory. Students may miss only 15% of classes. Any student missing more than 15% of classes may fail the course due to a lack of attendance.

- Classes meeting 1 time per week – 1 class per 8 week term (This includes blended classes.)

Grading Policy: Official grades are issued for each student at the end of each term. Students will be graded by the letter grade system shown below.

A = 90-100 D = 60-69 B = 80-89 F = 59 or below C = 79-70

Inclement Weather: Campbell University’s policy is to remain in operation during periods of inclement weather. If extreme or emergency weather develops, the University will work through those situations as they develop. If there is any question concerning class changes due to weather, the student should check his/her Campbell email.

Incomplete Work: A grade of "incomplete" will be issued only under extremely extenuating circumstances and only with permission of the RTP campus director.

Internet/Email Requirements: Students are expected to monitor their Campbell email address. Special information may be emailed to this account.

Students are required to have and regularly monitor a valid email address and internet service provider. A Campbell University email account is required. Students must ensure that the email address entered in the Blackboard system is functional. It is the student’s responsibility to ensure no email filters exist that will block the delivery of emails from Blackboard or the instructor.

The following features of Blackboard may be used: Announcements, Course Documents (which contains this syllabus), Staff Information, Assignments (and possibly makeup tests, if allowed), Discussion Board, Grade Center and External Links. Unused Blackboard features will be disabled, if possible, to avoid confusion. If other features are used, an announcement in Blackboard will be posted. In cases where a class has to be canceled due to inclement weather or other circumstances, Blackboard might be used to keep the class as close to schedule as possible.

Missed Classes: Students who are aware that they will miss a class should inform the instructor before class. Scheduled class assignments (tests, quizzes, etc.) may be re-scheduled or made-up with a prearranged, excused absence.

Plagiarism: Plagiarism is any use of another person’s words or ideas without giving proper credit to the person from whom you borrowed the words or ideas. Plagiarism is the theft of intellectual property. Plagiarism includes the following:

- Failing to cite properly any direct or indirect quotation(s) from professionally written materials (books, journal articles, etc.) student papers, projects, presentations, etc.

- Submitting as your own work a paper, project, or presentation that you did not compose (that is, write, compile, draw, etc.)

- Allowing another person to write your paper or develop your presentation or assignment.

Students who plagiarize will be subject to failing the assignment and/or failing the course. Additional sanctions may be imposed by the Campus Director. See the Extended Campus Student Handbook for further information.

Turnitin.com: “Turnitin.com” is a web-based service that provides online reviews of written material to judge if it has been copied from another source. Turnitin.com is used to evaluate the possibility of a student plagiarizing or cheating on written material. The instructor may require students to submit written work in an electronic format for the purpose of utilizing the Turnitin.com service.

Class Schedule: Class will meet Monday evenings and begin promptly at 7:45. If students are tardy, they are responsible for obtaining missed information. Students should check their campus Campbell email daily for announcements or changes in the schedule, assignments, syllabus, etc.

...1. How do the properties of the internet influence the book publishing industry? E-book can be sold and distributed to reader without having the reader stepping out of the house. Internet enables reading materials to reach out to more readers at faster rate and more easily. It also allows books to be published online with less effort and cost compared to printing them to be sold in book stores. Reduced books prices tends to help books to sell better, as the barrier on acquiring and disposing the reading material is reduced. On top of that, e-books will not run out of order, unlike books where the maximum amount of books sold are limited to the amount of books it is printed. Searching of books can be made easier by searching for a certain genre on the internet as everything is digital. This makes less popular books to sell better as most readers of a genre don't mind reading anything off the shelf of their favourite genre, as long it is relatively cheap. There are writing forums available on the internet, allowing writers to publish their work and seek feedback from more people compared to writing it personally. This has pros and cons in terms of work being criticised or praised before the book is even published. Also, this allows the name of the writer to be well-known on the internet before publishing your actual work. 2. Is the Kindle a disruptive innovation? Justify your answer. Disruptive innovation means a product created to destroy the existing market of another...

...Amber Ferrell Ms. Hammonds Eng. 101-A04 13 October 2014 Isis Affects Us All Isis militants, for the past four weeks, have been terrorizing and mutilating the town of Kobani, taking control of nearly half of the town. Hundreds of decapitated corpses have been reported in Kobani. Kurdish defenders, in Kobani, ambushed Islamic State fighters and seemed to have mostly survived the battle. There is still no agreement on whether the US can use the air base in southern Turkey. The Incirlik air base is still being discussed, as well as a refugee center and perhaps a no-fly zone. Turkey has reportedly allowed the US to use their bases against Islamic State militants as well as coalition forces. People devoted to Isis around the world are said to most likely attack people in Western Countries and the United States. Referring to what occurred in Kobani, Isis and followers try to take down a country, state by state. This leaves little hope for survival in any state or country Isis followers decide to attack. Isis’ reputation is one that is explained with great brutality and lack of remorse. If Isis attacks the states in America, America will be forced to go into defense against some extremely ruthless characters. “Isis came into the villages. They beheaded people as well as animals. They took animals and girls; they left nothing. Even animals don’t do what Isis are doing. They are doing these things and it is not acceptable” (Shahin, Belal. Kobani refugee). The intensity of this...
