Characteristics of Obsession

...Its 9:00 at night and a 47 year old man has been washing his hands nonstop for the past two hours. A young woman touches her doorknob twenty two times before leaving for work each morning. A senior in high school rubs each desk before he can leave the classroom; he is always the last one to leave. People even have a persistent disturbing preoccupation; an obsession. They are controlled by this unwanted yet unavoidable urge to compete an objective. Unfortunately for them and many others like them, their objective is unreachable, leaving them utterly unfulfilled. Obsession has been defined by dictionary as “a compulsive preoccupation with fixed idea or unwanted feeling or emotion, often with symptoms of anxiety.” It can often lead to an addictive habit that becomes hard to resist or a habit where a person becomes dependent upon someone or something. For example, a gambling addiction may result from a person’s obsession to win; a smoking addiction may result from a person’s obsession to ingest nicotine. Other types of obsession may also include: a person’s obsession with hair or looks, with weight, or feeling the need to look young. Throughout my life, I have experienced one of these obsessions. When I was twelve years old, I was obsessed with weight and how to be thin. Since I was really chubby at that time, I began skipping lunch. My obsession with wanting to look thin resulted in a negative effect; my skin became so thin, and my ribs could be seen. Another example of a person’s...

Enough

...'Enough,'' a jarring thriller packed to the gills with cheap shocks, suggests the emergence of a new Hollywood subgenre: the male yuppie horror film. The unspoken premise behind it suggests that a new generation of cold young men has arisen who are so obsessed with fattening their portfolios and chiseling their abs that they have forgotten to grow souls. And yes, that premise probably contains a tiny grain of truth. Out of this grain, however, the movie has conceived a caricature even more monstrous than Glenn Close's voracious Medusa in ''Fatal Attraction.'' On a certain tit-for-tat level, ''Enough'' might even be seen as a feminist revenge for the stereotyping in ''Fatal Attraction,'' even though both films were written and directed by men. The movie, which opens today nationwide, also exploits an ugly undercurrent of class warfare. Its star, Jennifer Lopez, plays a spunky working-class woman suckered into marriage with a rich yuppie master of the universe who brutally abuses her. In the movie's climax, she faces down her husband in one-on-one combat, armed with brass knuckles and fortified by a crash course in martial arts. Will honest working-class pluck and self-reliance triumph over spoiled upper-class privilege? You don't have to ask. Throughout, Ms. Lopez holds the screen in a star performance that has less to do with acting than with embodying a forceful, streetwise woman who stands up for herself. The movie's yuppie monster, versions of which you may have...

Fear of the Unknown

...Fear of the Unknown Taking any kind of a risk is a gamble. They have the potential to lead to a harmful or dangerous outcome, yet can still provide the opportunity for an outcome that can perceived as positive. The essay, “Into the Wild” by Jon Krakauer is his account of Chris McCandless’ search for himself through taking a risk and inhabiting the Alaskan wilderness. Through his lack of survival skills, it is evident that McCandless is a person who likes to take part of risky and dangerous behaviors. “Immune to Reality” by Daniel Gilbert is an analytical essay that revolves around the existence of the psychological immune system. This defense system proves to work as a mechanism that can create positive views out of a negative experience thus producing happiness to an individual. Through Gilbert’s analysis he discovers that people are usually not in favor of taking risks out of fear of feeling regret. However he proves how the psychological immune system can turn a negative consequence of taking a risk into a more pleasant and bearable one. The essay “Another Look Back, And A Look Ahead” by Edward Tenner is an insightful discussion about how people often miscalculate the way technologies will work in the future and to what extent they are useful. People may find themselves getting an unexpected outcome of some new technology which can lead to dangerous risks in the future. People take risks because they want to attain happiness however in the process of this, sometimes people’s...

Violence in School

...Aashik Thakkar Dr. Jack Beckham. Eng 102 27th June, 2012 Violence in School. Violence in school have become a very serious problem from past many years. American Schools are not safe. “An estimated 1.5 million U.S. students between the age of 12 to 18 are victims of nonfatal crimes at school” (Hong, and Eamon 428). There is as much violence inside the school building as it is outside. Not only nonfatal crimes, also the fatal crimes such as sexual harassment, bullying and minor in possession of drugs and guns are on dramatic rise. Priscilla Thompson in ‘The New York Amsterdam News’ reported that “according to educational department recorded 800 sexual offences, 53400 fights, 28000 cases of bullying and more than 8000 weapon possession cases” (31). Whereas, in 1996-97 “Ninety percent of public schools had no ‘serious violent-crime’ reported, [but] those that did reported 7150 robberies and 10950 physical attacks” (Koch 884). The violence in school have also been upgraded as the time passed by, because surveys and research have confirmed that violent activities like ‘Bullying’ have caused students kill their peers or commit suicide. Most of the time motives behind killings in school are the same ‘Revenge.’ In 1997, “Michael Carneal, 14, Kill[ed] three students and injured five others at his ... high school ... later he says, he felt going to prison would be better than continuing to endure bullying, he was subjected to in school” (Greenya 111). Black Fish

...Alyssa Stewart Period: 3 AP Land & Comp Every day marine mammals are taken from their homes in the ocean and forced to live in terrible conditions in places using them as an attraction to profit off of. Theme parks across the world force these animals to preform tricks for viewer’s amusement, all while living contained in an area the size of a large bathtub. While many parks provide the jobs that come with the experience to see these animals, the conditions in which these animals are kept is really disturbing. After watching the film Blackfish and seeing how brutally these animals are treated it really changes ones perspective of these “amusement” parks. However some parks do rescue sick and mistreated animals for rehabilitation only to release them once the treatment is finished, but ones like SeaWorld take advantage of these beautiful creatures. In the documentary Blackfish director Gabriela Cowperthwaite does an astounding job of portraying this evidence of the Orca whales being taken and abused within the “care” of SeaWorld. Her purpose for creating this film is to increase awareness of the captivity of the Orca whales and the effect it has on the whales and their trainers, also to inform the audience of how SeaWorld misleads the public about the captivity and care of the whales. Blackfish documents and exposes the treatment of Orca whales and their trainers as well as the secretive SeaWorld Corporation. Gabriela Cowperthwaite’s audience was mainly anyone who...

...interaction. If we continue to turn a blind eye to our nation’s youth then we are not only doing a disservice to them, but to ourselves. One of the major issues I think the majority of people we know are all guilty of is Texting. Texting for those who don’t know (or have been under a rock in the last ten years) is the ability to send a short message composed of text to a device such as a smartphone, tablet, etc. For most texting is a primary form of communication. It doesn't seem bad at a glance, people text all the time, while they're walking, in class, and even while driving. What harm could come of a small message? The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported that in 2010 driver distraction was the cause of 18 percent of all fatal crashes – with 3,092 people killed – and crashes resulting in an injury – with 416,000 people wounded. More than ten percent of drivers aged 18 to 20 who were involved in an automobile accident and survived admitted they were sending or receiving texts when they crashed. The New Wave Of Feminism In Film

...gaining success in the business world and were beginning to make comparable wages to men. Likewise, women were exploring their sexuality. They no longer needed a man to complete them and many were content to stay single for much longer or even to explore relationships with other women (Holgrave 4). Along with this wave emerged a new, more liberated femme fatale. Breaking previous matrimony norms, these women were often single business women, living a life that mirrored that of a young bachelor. No longer confined to being a housewife, they held professional jobs and made good salaries. They were seeking higher education and making their mark in both the business and political worlds. An example of this new femme fatale is Alex from Fatal Attraction. Unlike the early femme fatales who were often homemakers and housewives, she is a single businesswoman, a successful editor for a publishing company. She becomes attracted to Dan and lures him into a sordid affair, eventually becoming obsessed with him. She maniacally follows him and brings raving threats upon him and his family. Alex is a bolder and much more sinister femme fatale than those of the 40’s. In addition, these femme fatale’s revealed more nudity than previous ones, a testament to the changing times in society. However, the fact that Alex dies at the end of the film and is portrayed as a maniac may be a testament to the fact that, although women now have a prominent role in society, affairs and promiscuity are still frowned...

Types of Love

...Name Instructor Course Date Love Types Introduction Love styles are modes of operation that show the various ways in which people love. John Lee captured these types of love in 1973 in his classic book titled ‘Colors of Love’. There are six types of love, they include; Eros, Ludus, Storge, Mania, Pragma and Agape. When Harry met Sally is a 1989 film in relation to the creation of a relationship; it is a romantic comedy. The two main characters are friends for a period of twelve years before becoming lovers. It also addresses many household concepts that are encountered in a relationship, this include; “transitional person” and” high maintenance” girlfriend. It entails storge, where the individuals involved first become friends before they become partners. War of the Roses is also a 1989 film on breaking down of a relationship. The Unawareness of Homelessness

...certain individuals in society. Seems that in this century its ok to repeat corruptive behavior as long it’s not as harmful as it had been before in history. It’s come to a time where we can concentrate many individuals into areas that allow them to remove the issue of homelessness from the views of society. Marginalization is part of the way the homeless have been abstracted from the rest of society when homeless lives are of very little concern since marginalization has continued to push them further away from society. It’s a history of treatment that has continued to be used as in the past , but we are unfamiliar of the history of the homeless to have empathy of their circumstances. It’s also contributed to the unknown fear we have of the homeless as we walk in fear of the homeless but not understanding why we are scared of them except that their not privileged like we are. Discrimination of the homeless has been the force behind dehumanizing these individuals shifting the perspective of society to believe that they deserve this treatment leaving us with little intentions to stop this cruel treatment. Abstraction of the homeless has been one of the ways the homeless are dehumanized as their existence in society is disregarded by compiling homeless individuals into areas to be stationed away from the more privileged...

To appease the Almighty? To have what we want? Well yeah, most of the time the latter one. Because even agnostics pray, prayer is an involuntary reaction, everyone, no matter a believer or an atheist, has said in his mind at least once, “I wish it happened like this”, haven’t they? We pray even without knowing that we are doing so. Now, the success rate is a matter of debate. But definitely we set a substantial store on the power of prayer, that’s why mass prayers are conducted in churches and temples, and also on much less religious scales. Prayers are a form of thought, directed thought to put it in better words. We direct our thoughts; or rather push them in such a way so as to achieve something, in the same way we reach out with our arms to get something. Similarly, our thoughts too have the ability to influence matter without being in direct contact with our environment. How are prayers answered? It is based on the same principle of our mind affecting the outer environment. Let’s take an example...

Research Paper: Stephen King

...All of which are unique, intense, and ultimately terrifying. My question is, who is this person and what is it that inspires this creativity and horror? As a child, I grew up in a household of readers. There was never a time I that I can recall my mother, father, brothers, or myself not having one or more books that each of us were reading. My mother’s favorite author was (and is) Stephen King. There was something that intrigued me about this, though I was not allowed to read most of his works for the longest time; of course my mother was concerned that they would be inappropriate for me to read. This only made the intrigue of the author that much more. Once I was old enough to begin discovering his works, I started to understand the attraction. He’s book were like mental train wrecks; there were times when all you wanted to do was put the book down, but couldn’t seem to do so. Even though I have known what a phenomenal author Stephen King is, I feel as though I have always had the burning question, what is it that inspires and drives him? He was the first thing to cross my mind when...

...Psychological Disorders Writing Assignment The purpose of this project is to give you experience in making clinical diagnoses and to attempt to make sense of the many psychological disorders that are out there. You have been assigned to watch a popular movie. I decided to give this to you before Christmas Break because you will have at least 2 weeks to think of the movies form the list and watch one or two or whatever number you want. Pretend that you are a clinical psychologist, and the character in the movie has come in to your office. There is one central character in the movie that has symptoms of a psychological disorder (sometimes there may be more than one character; I have given you the character with the most obvious symptoms). In your paper, you should give a brief description of the character. Then, you should answer the following: o Identify the diagnosis that you would make of the character. • You should back up your diagnosis with the relevant symptoms displayed by the character (in other words, explain why did you make the diagnosis that you did). Refer to the movie to illustrate the symptoms that the character demonstrates. • Discuss all the possible symptoms of the disorder; does the client show all the possible symptoms, or only some of the possible symptoms of the disorder? • In some cases, the character may be lying, and does not really have a disorder. For example, the person may be faking the disorder to avoid prosecution...
