Honestly, the greatest tragedy for me is always death. I understand that it is a part of life, but it has always been extremely hard for me to handle. My sophomore year brought me one of the greatest tragedies I have ever experienced. The death of my close friend Alton was indeed my greatest tragedy.
Following my normal school routine, I was walking to my third period class. On my way to class, a couple of schoolmates brought to my attention that my best friend’s brother, Alton, had passed. Alexis and I have been friends since elementary school, so her family was my family. Immediately, I thought it was just a rumor. No one had any facts. “This can’t be true, “I thought. I walked into class expecting Alexis to be in her desk. I was certain that she would tell me that the rumor was not true. When I walked through the door, her desk was empty. My heart hastily dropped to my feet. As I slowly walked to my desk, my mind ran across a thousand things at once; my heart broke with every step. I finally reached my desk. I sat there silently.
My heart felt heavy. I couldn’t talk. I couldn’t cry. My state of disbelief and shock was just that severe. All I could do was sit quietly. I asked to go to the restroom towards the end of class. I went and tried to call Alexis. The phone ringed several times, but I could not get an answer. On the way back to class I couldn’t help but wonder what happened. After siting and thinking for what seemed like forever, the class was finally dismissed by the lunch bell.
As we stood in the lunch line, my heart got heavier. I did not eat. Again, I just sat silently. As I sat in the cafeteria, I noticed the mood was different. The cafeteria was usually a happy environment. It would be filled with laughter, chatter, smiles, and of course, food. In comparison, on that day, a gloomy feeling hung over the cafeteria. It was quiet. Someone came to me

Arguement

...his article “The Feds’ Fib about Low-Fat,’ which was published in the New York Post on July 23, 2002. He is a syndicated column and he appeared in newspapers all over the country. This article is important to those who read and who are concerned about their health. Obesity can lead to other health issues, however, Fumento states that the government and food companies are accidentally misleading people about what works to stop the problem. In the article Fumento argues that the government is saying that having a low fat diet will reduce weight but this is false because people are eating less fat but gaining more weight instead of losing. Fumento’s extrinsic ethos is not very strong. Fumento is not famous enough that his reputation will affect readers. However, in different newspapers in which Fumento’s article appears, there will usually be a byline providing extrinsic ethos. For example, the byline in The Washington Times indicates that Fumento “is a senior fellow at the Hudson Institute.” Many readers will not know much about the Hudson Institute, but it sounds impressive. It makes the readers want to know more about this article. Overall, Fumento’s extrinsic ethos is not an important factor. Intrinsic ethos is another important rhetorical appeal in Fumento’s argument as he witness obesity in different country. He travels in many different countries. He also states that it all being treated as new, but yet it was all discussed in his 1997 book, “The Fat of the Land.” Pathos...

The Feb's Fib About Lowfat

...the article “The Fed’s Fib About Low-Fat”, written by Michael Fumento, the government’s role in the weight loss battle is being critiqued. The article appeared in the syndicated newspaper The Washington Times, which is read by an adult audience of diverse cultures and educational levels around the country. Michael Fumento argues that the government’s suggestions to consume low-fat diets, more specifically to “reduce the fat in their diets to 30% or less of total calories”, is misleading and does not lead to weight loss or a healthy consumer. The author uses the three rhetorical appeals to help persuade his audience, however his usage of logos strengthens his argument. Fumento uses extrinsic ethos to help build his argument. At the end of the article, Michael Fumento’s credentials are listed as the senior fellow at the Hudson Institute. By listing his title, he can influence the audience that he is knowledgeable and certified to make this argument. Fumento also states that he has written a book about the subject matter, which further strengthens his reputation to be an authority in writing this article. Fumento’s use of extrinsic ethos is strong because it shows his credibility. A well-balanced argument from the writer helps the audience to believe that the writer reviewed all sides of the argument and made a decision based on the facts presented. In this article, Fumento does not state or argue any validity to the government’s suggestion of low-fat diets promoting weight...

Idioms and Expression

...Idioms and Expressions by David Holmes A method for learning and remembering idioms and expressions I wrote this model as a teaching device during the time I was working in Bangkok, Thailand, as a legal editor and language consultant, with one of the Big Four Legal and Tax companies, KPMG (during my afternoon job) after teaching at the university. When I had no legal documents to edit and no individual advising to do (which was quite frequently) I would sit at my desk, (like some old character out of a Charles Dickens’ novel) and prepare language materials to be used for helping professionals who had learned English as a second language—for even up to fifteen years in school—but who were still unable to follow a movie in English, understand the World News on TV, or converse in a colloquial style, because they’d never had a chance to hear and learn common, everyday expressions such as, “It’s a done deal!” or “Drop whatever you’re doing.” Because misunderstandings of such idioms and expressions frequently caused miscommunication between our management teams and foreign clients, I was asked to try to assist. I am happy to be able to share the materials that follow, such as they are, in the hope that they may be of some use and benefit to others. The simple teaching device I used was three-fold: 1. Make a note of an idiom/expression 2. Define and explain it in understandable words (including synonyms.) 3. Give at least three sample sentences to illustrate how the expression is used...

Dubliners

...Dubliners Joyce, James Published: 1914 1 About Joyce: James Augustine Aloysius Joyce (Irish Séamus Seoighe; 2 February 1882 – 13 January 1941) was an Irish expatriate writer, widely considered to be one of the most influential writers of the 20th century. He is best known for his landmark novels Ulysses (1922) and Finnegans Wake (1939), the short story collection Dubliners (1914) and the semi-autobiographical novel A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (1916). Although his adult life was largely spent outside the country, Joyce's fictional universe is firmly rooted in Dublin and provide the settings and much of the subject matter for all his fiction. In particular, his tempestuous early relationship with the Irish Roman Catholic Church is reflected through a similar inner conflict in his recurrent alter ego Stephen Dedalus. As the result of his minute attentiveness to a personal locale and his self-imposed exile and influence throughout Europe, Joyce became simultaneously one of the most cosmopolitan and one of the most local of all the great English language writers. Source: Wikipedia 2 Chapter 1 The Sisters There was no hope for him this time: it was the third stroke. Night after night I had passed the house (it was vacation time) and studied the lighted square of window: and night after night I had found it lighted in the same way, faintly and evenly. If he was dead, I thought, I would see the reflection of candles on the darkened blind, for I knew that two candles...

Habit Is Memory 20 There is no such thing as a poor memory, only a trained or untrained one. There is no limit to the capacity of the memory.
