Fencing

Fencing, as cited in the Webster's Dictionary, is "the sport of fighting with swords, esp. foils, épées, or sabers, according to a set of rules, in order to score points against an opponent." Fencing is very popular in the European culture. Many people refer to it as "Sword Fighting" it is seen in many movies, as well as books. In the sport, the two opponents are required to wear a specialized uniform to protect themselves when waving the foil, épées, or saber, around.

Fencing is defined as "The sport and act of swordplay." The history of fencing as changed extensively over the years, before the Christian era, almost two thousand years ago, they used spears instead of the known weapons used today. Once the invention of gunpowder came into play, it changed to a fight to the death by many nobility to restore and avenge honor. As they entered the fourteenth century, Germany was the first country to try to legalize fencing as a sport, as well as fights to the death, this did not go over very well with everyone. During the fifteenth century Spain decided to establish the first fencing school. Soon after that, the eighteenth century grew the idolizing sport, but many countries in Europe decided to get rid of the fight to the death factor of the sport, as well as added protective covering to those that played the sport, to insure the safety of opponents. Around this time, Italy, France, and Germany, decided that the sport was better played with specialized weapons, hence the invention of the foil, épées, and saber. The reason that they changed the weapons was for a lighter advantage, of greater speed, dexterity, and precision. After the advancements in the sport it became more well known as a sport rather than a deadly game, it gave way to many like it that furthered growth in sports and entertainment. Since eighteen - ninety six, it has been an Olympic sport. Italy and France have been the most successful in obtaining medals in the competition. Sadly, the United States has not been as successful in ranking high for the medals.

This sport has many different competitors, from different ages to certain disabilities. The United States has both competitions for men and women. The object of the sport is to score a clean touch on the opponent, without being hit as well.

There are many different types of equipment that go into the sport, the personal uniform for each competitor is required, as well as a mask that protects the face and neck, for women, they are required to wear breast protectors, for both sexes, they have to wear protective gloves,

Page 1 finally, they wear underarm protectors and elbow guards.

There are two forms of competition, the individual competition and the intercollegiate team competition. Individual competition is a one on one subfield, with players ranked in specific areas. The intercollegiate team competition is made up of nine players on each side, three in every division of weapons.

The modern day fencing weapons are consisted of three, the foil, the épée and the saber. Each one has specific qualities that help opponents in different ways, the foil is most common. In modern movies about older times, they typically use the saber, the reason for that is that it looks similar to the type of swords they used in older times, especially during the medieval era.

The foil, is the most basic weapon available. It is commonly referred to as the thrusting weapon. It is approximately thirty three inches and seventeen point sixty four ounces. It is thin and flexible, with a concave guard to help to protect the hand. As defined in the Webster's dictionary it is, "a light fencing sword without cutting edges but with a button on its point."

The Épée, is also a thrusting weapon, it has a pointed end, as well as it is slightly heavier. It is twenty seven ounces and forty three point two inches long. With using a Épée, it is more likely for players to get hit at the same time and score a point, it designed for the agility inclined, but it is not limited to just those opponents, it is available to any person at any time. Most people only use one type of fencing weapon though. As defined in the Webster's dictionary it is, "A sharp-pointed dueling sword, designed for thrusting and used, with the end blunted, in fencing."

The Saber, is the most dangerous of the fencing swords, one mustn't be too careful when handling said sword. The saber, is the lightest of the three, at only seventeen point five ounces and forty one point two inches in diameter. As defined in the Webster's dictionary it is, "a heavy cavalry sword with a curved blade and a single cutting edge. a light fencing sword with a tapering blade."

There are many different types of skills and techniques for the players, such as, the French grip, on guard, advance retreat, thrust, lunge, and recovery from lunge.

What most people take from fencing is the act of simple attacks, the ones that most people are familiar with, due to books , movies and TV shows. There are, the straight attack,

Page 2 disengage, and cutover.

As well as compound attacks, we do not see these as often in movies, but they are the main attacks, they consists of, the beat, the one-two or double disengage, and the doublement.

There is of course the defense mechanisms, which is mostly self explanatory, parry 6, parry 4, parry 7, and parry 8.

The four main points that a player tries to hit are all on the torso, the shoulder blade, chest, sides and stomach. Any of these would sub vise for a point to the opponent who made the attack. The most common is the stomach, although, it is the most heavily guarded one, the sides and shoulder blades are the best for surprise attacks. Sadly, when playing such a sport, the element of surprise in limited and controlled.

It is important for any teacher planning on taking this sport on to teach it in the proper way, by making sure that the students selective aren't known for horseplay or off-task behavior. It is also important that the teacher be familiar with the sport themselves, to have played it before, and to teach it correctly to the students, so that if they may make a mistake, the teacher can demonstrate the proper way of doing such mistaken movement. The teacher should advise the students to get comfortable with the protective gear, and understand the dangers of playing with swords.

There are many terms that the players, as well as referees must know, to be able to conduct themselves in the correct manner for the sport. Some such are as listed.

1. Advance, a move forward to gain ground.
2. Attack, an offensive movement that gains right of way.

There are many schools that offer scholarships for such the sport, although, it is presumed to be a tough scholarship to achieve. For the right person must be agile, quick, perceptive, and overall good at fencing. It is important for a person to be agile so they are quick to make the correct counterattacks in order to avoid getting hit. The person must be quick in order to make the point, hitting the opponent before they even have a chance to understand what is going on. Being perceptive is, in most people’s opinion, the most important, you must know your opponent, understand their moves, and be able to predict the measures at which they will take to try and score a point.

Since the first official sword fight, or fencing match, the sport has changed. Although it is still not as well know as it's competitors, basketball, soccer, football, etc., it is still a sport that many play today. Many of the sports greatest players have come from specific fencing schools, or private school that offer the sport to its students. Many encourage other countries to adapt it into their culture. But, without the correct protective armor, this sport can turn into a deadly massacre. That is one of the main reasons that schools do not offer it as a program, because they would be held accountable for any personal injuries that occur while the student was in their custody.

Despite these obvious cons, there are also many pros to the sport, such as a lifelong appreciation for something as interchangeable as sports. To be apart of fencing is to be a part of a history lush with growth the new developments, and further change.

Fencing

...In this essay I will be talking about Fencing and how it is played in Greece and some other countries as well. Fencing is well known in many Roman countries as well as France, Russia, and it is best known in Hungary. In Greece many people compete in clubs and group, and then move up to arenas and leagues. Examples of Greek champions are Leonidas Pyrgos and Ioannis Georgiadis who have won gold medals. Tilemachos Karakalos who has won silver, and Periklis Pierrakos-Mavromichalis who has won a bronze medal. Today many people participate in leagues and compete for trophies and medals. The things you would need in order to participate in a fencing match is an electronic rapier or an un-sharpened rapier that can be identified by a small button covering at the tip. You may also need comfortable clothes that you can easily move in. Next you will need to get some protective gear for your chest, head, and legs so you will not be hurt by the dull blade. After you gather your gear you will need to find a relatively large and clear space that you can move around in and that the chances of anything being broken is minimal. Next it would be a good idea to have boundaries of some kind to show the amount of room you will have to stay in during the match. The way that you fence depends on your preferred style of holding your rapier and the way you want to swing it at your opponent. The standard way of griping your rapier is by wrapping your index finger around the very top of the french...

Swashbuckling Comparison

...Christophe Pignol # 959 2474 October 4th 2013 FMST 350C/FFAR 398C TAKE HOME EXAM The swordplay film genre evolved quite differently in respective of their produced countries. In Europe, and later Hollywood, Swashbuckling was a product of Romanticism a movement in art and letters started in the 18th century. It was popularized and revived during the silence era of films. It drew on a spectacle feel and the grace and agility of the main characters, as well as the footwork. In Japan, the “chanbara” and the different samurai sub-genre, gave a voice to its cultural traditions, which seemed forgotten after the feudal period. Most films have a recurring plot such as a roaming masterless samurai or work seeking. In China, the “Wuxia Pian” evolved into a much more energetic, acrobatic and choreographed sub-genre. With the three sequences we have watched, I will focus first on the visuals, and editing choices to then draw a comparison of composition, choreography of the action, and aural sound (including soundtrack when applicable) of the three clips to differentiate the three main sub-genre of the swordplay style. The first sequence in Captain Blood (1936) is the first scene of one-on-one “swashbuckling” in film history. The movie is set in the 17th century, as the costumes would suggest. Much like swashbuckler novels (e.g. The Three Musketeers by Alexandre Dumas.) the two protagonists, Peter Blood and Captain Lavasseur, are fighting for a woman. The two men fence to death in what...

Warrior (Sword Master) Builds Guide

...Warrior (Sword Master) Builds Guide There are four builds for Sword Master and a few rogue builds. I will show you a few builds that you can tweak to your liking and explain why I chose certain skills for each one. These builds are for level 40, however, I will give you a little information about future job classes and their skills as sort of a heads up. Sword Master: Sword Master is a short to long range fighter with lots of AoE (area of effect) and crowd control with fast paced damage per second. This class has little team support, but what it does have is a very good buff for dungeon runs with other people (which people ask for in parties). Overall, this class is very versatile, being great in both pve and pvp. Sword Master really shines as a Dark element fighter. We are not sure why, but in pvp, Magic Defense and Physical Defense do not work. Therefore, most people rely on elements to deal damage. Skills that are affected by Dark element: Warrior: Heavy Slash, Rising Slash, Circle Break Sword Master: Triple Slash, Deep Straight, Hacking Stance, Line Drive, Infinity Edge (only part of it), Hemorrahage, Eclipse, Half Moon Slash, Aerial Combo, Counter Slash, Dash Slash, Dash Combo With this in mind, you can see why Sword Master is best as Dark element. With this element, you will be doing lots and lots of damage in both pve and pvp. The best equipment sets for Sword Master/MoonLord are the Apocalypse and Manticore set. They give Dark %. The Fencing Problem

...The Fencing Problem - Math The task -------- A farmer has exactly 1000m of fencing; with it she wishes to fence off a level area of land. She is not concerned about the shape of the plot but it must have perimeter of 1000m. What she does wish to do is to fence off the plot of land which contains the maximun area. Investigate the shape/s of the plot of land that have the maximum area. Solution -------- Firstly I will look at 3 common shapes. These will be: ------------------------------------------------------ [IMAGE] A regular triangle for this task will have the following area: 1/2 b x h 1000m / 3 - 333.33 333.33 / 2 = 166.66 333.33² - 166.66² = 83331.11 Square root of 83331.11 = 288.67 288.67 x 166.66 = 48112.52² [IMAGE]A regular square for this task will have the following area: Each side = 250m 250m x 250m = 62500m² [IMAGE] A regular circle with a circumference of 1000m would give an area of: Pi x 2 x r = circumference Pi x 2 = circumference / r Circumference / (Pi x 2) = r Area = Pi x r² Area = Pi x (Circumference / (Pi x 2)) ² Pi x (1000m / (pi x 2)) ² = 79577.45m² I predict that for regular shapes the more sides the shape has the higher the area is. A circle has infinite sides in theory so I will expect this to be of the highest area. The above only tells us about regular shapes I still haven't worked out what the ideal shape is. Width...

Pole Fencing

...I stand on the runway with my head held down and my heart racing. Although I have done this many times before, I still get the nervous rush. I can hear my coach, Mr. Hall, telling me to move my hands up on my pole and to drive my legs up. My first attempt out of the three I have. Mr. Hall had asked me if I wanted to try pole vaulting my Sophomore year. I didn’t say no before I tried. That practice, some of the upperclassmen were showing me some drills to grab the concepts and form of pole vault. They made it very clear that once you are at the top, you need to rotate your body to land on the mats. It was hard to learn the form for me because I’m left handed and had to do opposite of what everyone else was doing. Keeping my left hand on the bottom and my right one on top, learning to drive my legs upwards, and to be at the highest point before rotating my body was a lot to take in for one practice. As I stood on the runway for the first time that practice, I knew I was going to be really bad. I was really nervous for the outcome because I wanted to succeed. I began to sprint down the runway, I planted my pole into the pit and remembered what they said about being at the top. I realized I didn’t have the upper body strength to get me to that point. I didn’t even clear opening height which is five feet. I knew I was going to hate this. First attempt. I lifted my head up. My eyes were drawn to the pit. The bar was lying calmly at seven feet six inches. I take a few deep breaths and...

The key procedures of the evaluation of design are fulfilled by inquires, observations, and inspections. The same procedures can be used to test the operating effectiveness as well. Re-performance of controls is another method to test the operating effectiveness depending on different situations. Some of the key considerations related to the evaluation of design and the testing of operating effectiveness are summarized as follows: Information technology considerations Auditors should understand a company’s information technology (IT), including the system-generated data and reports, which are required by PCAOB. Arguments Against Border Fencing

...The pivotal topic of national security is also thoroughly discussed in Border Fencing Is Crucial to Ensure American Security. The article states that America’s borders are largely unprotected and penetrable, which can lead to dangerous criminals seeping in and wreaking havoc in our nation. The article also goes on to discuss that border fencing is essential to the efforts to combat illegal immigration from foreign countries in order to protect the citizens of America. The author claims that border protection has proven to be an effective method to handle illegal immigration with verifiable results (Duncan Hunter, 2007). This argument ties into the fear that amnesty would cause the administration to decline in the implementation of border security...

Fencing at the Us Mexico Boarder

...Is fencing at the U.S.-Mexico border an effective immigration policy? Although the fence will channel the illegal immigrants to the areas where border patrol can seize them, it is not an effective immigration policy. The fence is not able to keep illegal immigrants from going around it, climbing over it, or digging under it; furthermore, it only covers one-third of the border. The US Mexico border is roughly 2,000 miles long. The fence, constructed by The Department of Homeland Security, is 18 feet high, 700 miles long, and built mostly near urban areas. A fence alone is not the solution because there are so many ways to overcome the obstacle, going to the areas not fenced, vehicle smuggling, and climbing. The other accessible way around the fence is to dig under it. Global Security.org has sited 40 tunnels were being burrowed under the fence between 2001 and 2006. The main reason I believe the reason the fencing is not an effective immigration policy is because there is not the manpower to monitor all the fence points. There is no way to have all the people needed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, to make sure no one is entering our country illegally. What draws these immigrants to make such a risk to cross the border into the United States? They believe they can make more money to send to their families in Mexico. They also believe, because we are a free country, we have more to offer them than their county. We are “the land of the free, home of the brave.” ...

Wood, vinyl, aluminum, and iron fencing are all popular fencing materials. Each material has its own range of styles and grades. Vinyl Fencing Vinyl fencing is made from polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and has several benefits over other fencing materials. Vinyl fencing is more expensive than its competitors but has incredible longevity and is maintenance-free. It is only limited by a small range of available colors. Recommendations Made by the Independent Commission on Banking (Icb) vs. Criteria in the Saunders-Walter Paper

...that retail operations be “ring-fenced” by 2019. A separate legal entity within a bank’s corporate group is to be established to provide retail and commercial banking services in the UK. Ring-fencing similar to the ‘swaps push out’ requirement in the U.S., which separates derivatives trading businesses from banking activities. Further, under the Volcker Rule, banks are to be prohibited from proprietary trading as well as investing in or sponsoring hedge funds and private equity funds. The ring-fencing recommendations by the ICB focus on insulating core essential banking services from potential losses caused by other activities, i.e., the riskier activities will otherwise be left intact within a non-retail investment banking structure. The ICB recommendations are only one small step short of a full Glass-Steagal separation of retail and investment banking in calling for operational, economic and legal separation. While this may improve safety of retail banks, it is a paradigm shift for bank structures and will come at a cost. In many respects the recommendations will create a bank model as purposed by Glass-Steagal (before its repeal in 1999): a style of retail banking where it is perceived as more of a basic utility with low return on equity for shareholders. To comply with the ring-fencing requirements, banks will need to fundamentally overhaul their business models. Essentially banks will need to create another bank within their bank with new boards and systems. This will come...

Border Wall Case Study

...Trump is also pushing border taxes more broadly against trading partners, which could help finance the wall. According to a Government Accountability Office 2009 report, the cost to build 1 mile of fencing at the border averaged between $2.8 million and $3.9 million. But that figure may be low relative to costs for future sections of the wall. It's based only on the first 220 miles fenced and does not include other factors, such as topography, transportation logistics in harder-to-reach areas (i.e. road-building and earth and drainage work), labor costs, land acquisition costs and surveillance equipment. "The first miles of fencing were in the easiest" places, said Marc Rosenblum, deputy director of the U.S. Immigration Policy Program at the Migration Policy Institute. These were fencing areas in or close to cities and accessible transportation, rather than deep in deserts or mountains. Additionally, the first miles were on public lands, while completing a border wall would require the government to acquire land from private holders. The GAO estimate for one difficult section of fencing near San Diego was $16...
