Fifa Corruption Paper

...Corruption Scores a Hat Trick Against FIFA FIFA has been at the center of a great deal of corruption during the last couple of years. There are endless topics to discuss on the matter of corruption and FIFA, but I wanted to focus on three of the biggest charges of corruption against FIFA, bribery, mistreatment of female athletes, and the use of slave labor to build stadiums to host their games. FIFA has been around for over a century and was a very respectable organization at one time, but that time is now over. This affects international business because there are currently 209 countries within FIFA. FIFA has a far reaching impact because soccer is the most popular sport in the world. To better understand why and how FIFA became so corrupt, I’d like to lead with some background on the history of FIFA and its biggest members. FIFA stands for The Fédération Internationale de Football Association (English translation: International Federation of Association Football), and is the governing body of association football, futsal and beach soccer. FIFA is responsible for the organization of football’s major international tournaments, notably the World Cup which commenced in 1930 and the Women’s World Cup which began in 1991. FIFA was founded in 1904 to oversee international competition among the national associations of Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. FIFA is headquartered in Zurich, Switzerland and consists of 209 national...

Fifa 2010

..."South Africans are very proud of what we have done here, it has been a fantastic event, from an economic and a unity perspective," says Lee-Anne Bac, director at Grant Thornton Strategic Solutions in Johannesburg. "Hosting the 2010 World Cup will radically alter the landscape for tourism in southern Africa. There has also been a reputational boost for South Africa that can help bring inward investment and visitors. South Africa has been rebranding as a tourist destination and as one based around the development of a global sports event business model." "So we really believe there will be a tourist momentum moving forward," says Ms Bac. "The tourism structures we developed for 2010 will stay in place, and the aim is now to attract further events, conferences and conventions to the country. 'Good returns' And many, including President Jacob Zuma, also envisage a lasting positive effect on the economy through the recent development of national infrastructure. And Ms Bac says she has already noticed one potential economic benefit from the investment in infrastructure. "As a citizen of South Africa it has made commercial life so much easier with the new roads and transport links, with less time wasted travelling and getting around," she says. The infrastructure legacy of the World Cup also includes stadiums, airports, and information technology. "We can safely say that we have good returns on our investment, which includes 33bn rand spent on transport infrastructure...

Fifa World Cup

...The FIFA World Cup, often simply the World Cup, is an international association football competition contested by the senior men's national teams of the members of Fédération Internationale de Football Association, the sport's global governing body. The championship has been awarded every four years since the inaugural tournament in 1930, except in 1942 and 1946 when it was not held because of the Second World War. The current champions are Spain, who won the 2010 tournament in South Africa. The current format of the tournament involves 32 teams competing for the title at venues within the host nation over a period of about a month; this phase is often called the World Cup Finals. A qualification phase, which currently takes place over the preceding three years, is used to determine which teams qualify for the tournament together with the host nation. The 19 World Cup tournaments have been won by eight different national teams. Brazil have won five times, and they are the only team to have played in every tournament. The other World Cup winners are Italy, with four titles; West Germany, with three titles; Argentina and inaugural winners Uruguay, with two titles each; and England, France, and Spain, with one title each. The World Cup is among the world's most widely viewed sporting events; an estimated 715.1 million people watched the final match of the 2006 FIFA World Cup held in Germany. The next three World Cups will be hosted by Brazil in 2014, Russia in 2018, and Qatar...

...The 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa Name: Institution: Professor: Course: No. of Words= 2646 words. The 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa Introduction When South Africa won the lobby for hosting the 2010 FIFA world cup, news went viral about it and almost reached everyone in the world. It was a great moment of joy and celebrations especially in the African countries. This jubilant joy and pomp celebrations might have been because of the continent’s attempts in bidding to host this mega sport event without success. Many people around the world had their eyes fixed on South Africa, some questioning the ability of the country to host such a famous activity in the world’s calendar. Some people saw fun; others saw failure and the rest predicted the worst scenario of terrorist attack. These reactions on this event were based on South Africa’s economic ability to prepare adequately for the occasion. Similarly, terror attacks and other security challenges were highly suspected considering the weaknesses in the South Africa’s security system. On the contrary, some companies affiliated to FIFA like Coca cola, Adidas and the KIA Motors, among others, saw a business opportunity there. They sponsored the event, alongside FIFA and the South African government, by providing services the football funs who gathered there, local and international, needed (Collins 2009). This business report, therefore, exhumes the motives behind the sponsorship, expectations, challenges faced during the...

...A city engages in the transactions that follow. For each transaction indicate the amount of revenue or expenditure that it should report in 2014. Assume first that the main objective of the financial statements is to enable users to assess budgetary compliance. Then calculate the amounts, assuming that the main objective is to assess interperiod equity. The city prepares its budget on a ‘‘modified’’ cash basis (that is, it expands the definition of cash to include short-term marketable securities), and its fiscal year ends on December 31. 1. Employees earned $128,000 in salaries and wages for the last five days in December 2014. They were paid on January 8, 2015. 2. A consulting actuary calculated that per an accepted actuarial cost method, the city should contribute $225,000 to its firefighters’ pension fund for benefits earned in 2014. However, the city contributed only $170,000, the amount budgeted at the start of the year. 3. The city acquired three police cars for $35,000 cash each. The vehicles are expected to last for three years. Solution: 1) Budgetary Compliance: Recognize salaries and wages costs when they are paid. $0 in 2014 and $128,000 in 2015. The amount is $0 in 2014 because it is paid in 2015 and not in 2014. Interperiod equity: Recognize the salaries and wages costs when they are earned. $128,000 in 2014. The amount is $128,000 because it is earned in 2014. 2) Budgetary Compliance: Recognize the amount paid during 2014 is $170,000. The...

To What Extend Did the Local Community Profit from the Fifa World Cup 2014 in Brazil?

...Introduction The FIFA World Cup in Brazil took place from the 12th of June to the 13th of July 2014. Attracting approximately one million foreign tourists in just one month (Loretta, 2014) it was without a doubt the major global sporting event of the year. Discussions about holding such an event in yet another developing country where controversial from the start and with regard to the 2016 Olympic Games also held in Brazil, they still are. In this essay I want to evaluate to what extent Brazil as a tourism destination benefitted from the World Cup – or not – and how this affects the destination in the long term. Therefore, I firstly provide three positive impacts on Brazil, of economic, social and environmental nature. This is followed by three negative impacts, divided into the same categories. This is followed by an application of theory about hallmark events and a future perspective of Brazil as a tourist attraction. In the end, I conclude this essay by summarizing the main aspects and giving my personal opinion on the developments described before. Body If we compare the total revenue of the World Cup with the total costs of the tournament, coming from investments such as infrastructure or stadium construction, we can calculate that the economical boost should be around 2.6 Billion Dollars (Harris, 2014). Also, the fact that one million foreign tourists were travelling the country in this period may not be underestimated. A positive experience of local culture and interaction...

Accounting Ethics

...All great businesses should have a clear set of organizational goals and policies, particularly when it comes to morals and ethics (Bush, 2013). Honesty plays a very significant role in morals and ethics. Every person in the organization has to hold him or herself to a high personal level of integrity. Consequently, incorporating policies that will support a high level of integrity also helps to administer how your company operates. An organization must cultivate standards of integrity for their employees and insist that they be followed. Despite the proper protocol and structure being in place ethical breaches can still occur, especially when the temptation to get ahead gets involved. Just recently for example, the former President of FIFA, Joao Havelange, 96, was the honorary president of soccer’s ruling body. Amid claims that he took bribes from the ISL marketing company, according...

Customer Decision Making

...Complex Decision-Making and Brand Loyalty COMPLEX DECISION MAKING High involvement purchases are recognized as those purchases that pose some level of risk on the purchaser or consumer. This can be further divided into brand loyalty, it is a habit, or complex decision-making, if there are many difference between brands and the products offered. Some examples include a house, a car or a big screen TV like the one my roommates and I bought in the end of August. As we were putting together our new place, the three of us came across an important decision: should we keep our 28 inch TV or go bigger? Of course, a 28 inch TV is more than decent but in the end we went for the 50 inch TV. Here is the process by which we decided to make our purchase. 1. PROBLEM RECOGNITION Although in our situation it was not an actual problem or, more importantly, a need, we felt there was a discrepancy between our actual state of TV usage and our ideal state. In reality, we had a regular-size TV. However, improvements in technology had made it out of date and we even had some malfunctioning problems with the screen. Ideally, we wanted a big screen TV which also meant better technology and picture quality. We also felt that we had managed to put together such a nice place that we ought to capitalize it with the purchase of a big screen TV that would also serve decorative purposes. Last, we want our place to be the “get together place” to watch games, movies, etc. So far it has been… 2. INFORMATION...
