Miseducation of Filipinos

...about the history and relationship between the Americans and the Filipinos upon reading this paper. It is quite intriguing what the main reasons really were for Americans in taking power over the Philippines. Was it for the good of the Filipinos or the Americans’ good? Whatever it was, they succeeded in almost every aspect of conquering the land because they knew the most effective way to subjugate the minds is by controlling their education. They created a new generation of good colonials, the “unFilipino” Filipinos. The indigenous ways of life of Filipinos had been changed to the American way of life. The Americans insisted on creating a “carbon-copy” of themselves in Filipinos through the imposition of their language in their education. I went to elementary and high school in the Philippines, and I know for a fact they used both English and Tagalog as the media of teaching. In the long run, I think this resulted in both positive and negative ways — positively, because I was uprooted to the U.S. and I was able to communicate with others, and negatively, because as I have just realized, I feel the “impediment” in my thought process because I cannot think consistently in one language.  NATIONALISM IN EDUCATION To have nationalism, Filipino must understand their Filipino culture on discipline, to have a unity in pursuing well-organized educational leaders that nationalism is important in education. Filipino must practice etiquette in education to pursue a goal. NEW PERSPECTIVE ...

The study covers current situations and socioemotional and socioeconomic problems of JFC and used standard qualitative techniques to gather field data. This study has identified that JFC are shaped by sociocultural and socioeconomic differences between Japan and the Philippines that play in individuals’ lives and decisions. The union of two people from different cultures and nationalities coupled with socioeconomic struggles and each individual’s underlying reasons to unite (marriage/cohabitation) may also lead to their separation. Furthermore, the study identified several unique socioemotional factors of the JFC as well: perceived unique ethnicity, the retention of a degree of love to the father who abandons them, and the need to see their fathers instead of feeling hatred and anger. Despite their abandonment, the JFC feel proud of their Japanese culture. Finally, JFC feel they...

Filipino Values(Aldub)

...FILIPINO VALUES (REACTION PAPER) Submitted by: Paula Nicole M. Escandor Submitted to: Prof. Lilibeth Cortez We Filipinos, almost all of us know about the hit noontime TV show Eat bulaga’s Kalyeserye, Especially the new love team, “AlDub” they’re known not just for their undeniably strong chemistry and the sweetness overload, but also because of the good values that their showing, the Filipino values we used to have, that’s actually fading slowly from now. The reality is, most of us nowadays forgot the traditional values, the proper ways. One of those is the way of courtship. Man courting a girl usually nowadays they don’t take it seriously, some just for fun, most doesn’t even know what courtship is and how it’s being done, when is the right time and age, for someone to know about this. But no, nowadays even kids who’s just an elementary students are hurrying their way to this stage, courting a girl from his age when he doesn’t even have any idea what’s really the meaning behind courtship. Some, just want to get a girlfriend, waiting is not on their list. Girls, gets easily fooled by a guy’s sweet words eventhough there’s really no meaning behind it. They easily get attached, not minding what the guy could do for them or if the guy is capable of protecting us. Girls nowadays aren’t conservative at all. In the Kalyeserye, they just don’t show us those love thingy, but the respect is there. We Filipinos are also known for being respectful, especially on someone older than...

Living the Filipino Music Today

...Living the Filipino Music Today A Reflection of the Filipino-ness in Lucio San Pedo’s Music Lucio San Pedro has been known to be one of the historical figures of Philippine music. Being dubbed as the creative nationalist, his philosophy in music paved the way for his memorable career as an artist. Conferred with the National Artist Award for Music in 1991, his contributions have indeed made a mark in defining the “Filipino-ness” in music. With the onset of the Original Pilipino Music in the 70’s, Lucio San Pedro’s works have imparted a great amount of influence to the artists that soon followed suit. With his undeniably most famous work which is Sa Ugoy ng Duyan, every student of an Art Appreciation class in the Philippines would remember the great artist because of this wonderful musical piece. The maestro’s main concern during his time was what will make Filipino music distinct and different. Given his educational attainment and experiences abroad, he was able to harness his talent and skill in music which allowed him to discover the great potential of the Filipino artist. Integrating the cultural dynamism and inherent nationalism of Filipinos, he was able to infuse the rich influence of the different folk songs of the Filipino culture into the music he has crafted so beautifully and innovatively. With his creative nationalism philosophy, he was able to encourage artists to express nationalism through the creative use of folk songs. As Lucio San Pedro would put...

Filipino Helpers in Hong Kong

...Filipinos helpers in Hong Kong are at the risk of being maltreated Introduction Castillo Clariza Avenales who was in her age of 33, had her right thumb being chopped by her male employer after she reported his sexual misconduct to his wife last year. She was not the first one experienced such an unfortunate incident. Hong Kong, which comes to the top rank in world domestic labor employment, has long been seen as somewhere nearby to earn good salaries for better livings by the Filipinos. However, these people might place themselves under the danger of being abused in this workplace. In a 2001 survey conducted by the Hong Kong Human Rights Monitor which is a shadow committee of the United Nations, 1000 maids out of 2500 claimed they were physically abused while 175 of them said they were either harassed or raped. (Stafford, 2001, p. 5) This number was underestimated, according to the Hong Kong Overseas Maid-Employer Association dean, since it was not precise and scientific enough as the police figures which the authorities never revealed. It is actually not uncommon to see Filipinos getting involved in discrimination, unfair treatments, and even violence. Discrimination, unfair treatments, abuses and violence Gatmaytan (1997) stated that “Filipinas are imported by other countries for jobs their own citizens will not perform and for wages domestic citizens would not accept,” (p. 247) which is very true. In Hong Kong, Filipinos are receiving salaries that two times or...

Filipino Amahs in Hong Kong

...the Philippines and Hong Kong. Managing children in HK households In Hong Kong, Filipino maids make up 3% of the population. They are especially common amongst families who prefer an English speaking maid. Hong Kong people utilize maids for household management and supervision of the children while both parents have full time jobs. In many situations, the maids will spend far more time with the children than both the parents. Thus, the management of children in Hong Kong is highly related to the amah in the family. There are certain requirements of maids before employment in Hong Kong: * 2/3 Weeks training of Chinese household management * Experience in managing children As most of employers are busy at work, the maid becomes a critical part in the family in taking care of the children during daytime. In terms of the Filipino maid, we found two main differences. The first one is role shift. Whilst in Hong Kong...

Implications of Taking Care of a Filipino Patient

...Herrera, Lei Dianne A. Uinversity of the Philippines – Manila College of Nursing Batch 2016 Implications of Taking Care of a Filipino Patient Communication and language play a vital role in establishing good connection between patients and their respective health care providers such as nurses. Mejico (2004) concluded that, “it is in their own mother tongue that a person can truly express his innermost sentiments, ideas, perceptions, and attitudes.” Relating it to class discussions, most Filipino students find it easier to learn and understand if the teacher considers a balanced use of the English language and the native language in explaining the lecture; the same is true for a patient-and-nurse relationship. It will be easier for a patient to express his sentiments if he uses the language he naturally speaks. At the same time, the nurse can precisely understand the patient’s concerns if she naturally uses the same language as well. It is through effective communication that a patient can openly speak of his difficulties and physical complaints for the nurse to precisely interpret the situation and render appropriate medical action. This concept is true for the patient to comprehend the nurse’s instruction or advice in return. A clear and constant communication will only be possible if both the patient and his nurse understand and speak a common language. According to Wilson and Billones (1994), ethnic identity is an important factor in rendering health...

Poor Learning Abilities of Selected Second Year Students Due to Neglected Filipino/Christian Values

...CHAPTER I THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND Introduction Education is the action or process of educating or being educated. But being educated not only means that you have learned all the knowledge you may need to succeed in life. There are factors that define success, acquiring all the learning and knowledge we may need and of course having the right attitude and proper values in facing all the challenges that we may encounter in life. Family is the basic unit of the society, our first school, our first teacher where in we obtained the foundation of our learning. At our early age, our parents never taught us the figures of speech or even idioms; they never tell us the law of gravity or even the logic behind of the law of supply and demand; they did not teach us to find the x and y in math. Instead, the first thing they taught us is how to pray, kissing the hand of elders (Pagmamano) which is sign of being respectful and how to be good with others through giving (generosity). The family is the place where we can have the best learning and that is being a good person. Besides the family, the school is another social unit that gives values education among children. Parents entrust their children to the school to perform significant tasks of developing children's potential to prepare them for active participation in the future. The teacher is the most important element in the educational success of the child in school. But as the child grows in all aspects, changes occur...
