CFO to CEO is it good idea and do they have what it takes to lead their respective organizations into the future. This is a very good question over the next few minutes we will discuss that very question and I will show you two CFO to CEO’s that made it by two different routes. I will conclude with my person perspective and closing thoughts. Dalton Tong is the President and CEO of Greater Southeast Healthcare System, Washington, D.C. and yes a CPA (Sandrick, 1995) Mr Tong, a well respected CPA amongst other things has risen through his career by way of what I would consider normal progression. He started as a CFO at the local level (hospital level) then progressed to CFO at the corporate level. After holding that position he move into a Chief Operating Officer positions and finally culminating as the CEO of Greater Southeast Healthcare System, Washington, D.C.. (Sandrick, 1995). This I consider a natural and healthy progression, by gradually moving out of his personal comfort area (finance) he had the opportunity to grow and develop. As leaders, and that is what we are talking about leadership, we have to be able grasp concepts normally no withing our expertise arena. The way to accomplish this is to “wade into the unknown waters”. Mr. Tong did not just jump in. The “wading” allowed him to pick up valuable information required to make sound educated judgments that will lead the company and the share holders into a brighter future. Now Let’s look at Mr. Richard Solomon, CFO of Intercontinental Hotels (ICH) who recently has been name CEO to take over June 30, 2011. Also a CPA (Forbes, 2011) Mr. Solomon, from what I have been able to research has strictly come from a financial background.

The “operations” side of the house appears to be missing from the resume. However I would like to think that ICH has

...Fin 501 – 301 Week 3 Homework – [Analyst’s Dilemma] Gao Pu Using up to several paragraphs, describe to whom you think Amy owes her loyalty? Why? Amy owes her loyalty to Lori, Steven and the company. Amy owes her loyalty to Lori - her best friend – more than she does to Steven and the company. As Amy mentioned in her article: the loyalty and commitment that investment bankers, particularly analysts, feel toward their employers is difficult for many to understand. She lived, ate and breathed her work. And there exists almost a cult mentality in the company and loyalty is even more important than one’s health, family and friends. Personally I have never worked at an investment bank so I cannot even imagine the mentality, but I do understand them and I do think that is a very important reason why there are so many successful investment banks in the U.S., more than any other country in the world. I do understand it, but I do not agree with it. Does this mentality even sound right? Is it the right standard to begin with? I know there are people who do not put their friends, family, and their loved ones first, but, for a noble reason, like saving lives, freedom, etc. Though the loyalty and commitment to the company is crucial, is it really more important than the loyalty you have to your best friend? A best friend who would do anything for you? Amy mentioned the loyalty to career and employer was, with few exceptions, the first priority. If in this case, Lori could not be the exception...

In this case, the advantages of changing Mcgee will be the company’s owners have limited liabilities but still paying individual taxes like before. Also, the LLC will be much easier to raise capital than sole proprietorship because it can borrow money from the bank, own property and obtain a large sum of capital. In addition, LLC will easy to transfer ownership to others. Disadvantages of changing Mcgee from a sole proprietorship to an LLC are difficult to separate ownership and management; also it is harder than start a sole proprietorship. 2. What are the advantages and disadvantages of changing the company organization from a sole proprietorship to a corporation? The most advantages of corporation are similar to LLC except corporation will have unlimited life and can own stock in other companies. The corporation has a huge disadvantage is a double taxation. And the rest of disadvantages are same as LLC. 3. What action would you recommend the company undertake? Why? I would recommend Mcgee company use LLC as a form of business organization. INTRODUCTION Community General Hospital was a growing and prosperous not-for profit organization in segregated Virginia from WWII until the abolishment of segregation in the 1960's. At that time they have served and treated the black community, however post-segregation caused for more competition and therefore Community general hospital has undergone various financial problems throughout their existence. Dr. Nolan Wright has been appointed the new manager of the Hospital. However, he has been puzzled by the conditions seen in the financial statements. Over time they had acquired an excessive amount of debt, poor management, budget deficits, and lack of hospital patients. In 1983 the Hospital relocated and changed the name from Whittaker memorial Hospital to Community General Hospital. The fifteen-million dollar bond that was issued and 1.5 million dollar pledges helped Community General Hospital achieve this change. In 1990 the debt increased to twenty-million, this in turn pushed the board of directors to extreme financial measures.
