Saving Private Ryan

Sumer Gebo

December 20, 2015

ENG 225 Introduction To Film

Instructor David Preizler

Going through and reading the requirements for this assignment and trying to decide which movie from the AFI’s top 10 list to do my final critique on I finally settled on the World War II epic Saving Private Ryan this movie has an A list cast of actors and director. This movie is one that will pull at your heart strings and make you wonder was this how life really was during this time and was this what was happening in the European theater at the time of the war. Trying to decide which theory to use while critiquing this movie the easiest one for me to chose was the genre theory not because it was the easiest one in the list but because I am the spouse of a combat veteran who has gone through many of the same things that the cast had to endure when they were filming this movie in a generalized sense.

Saving Private Ryan begins with the storming of the beach at Normandy in June of 1944 with Tom Hanks and Tom Sizemore and their soldiers trying to destroy a German pill box or fortified machine gun emplacement. Once they have successfully cleared the beach and they move in land and finally have a chance to rest and re-equip all of their men and get food, they are given a mission, to locate and retrieve on Pvt James Francis Ryan who was played in this film by Matt Damon. During their time searching for Pvt Ryan they have to overcome many obstacles and fight skirmishes throughout the Germany and French countryside. Now this movie would be considered part of the epic film genre even though it is based on semi actual events during wartime.

Even though this movie is purely fictional it is loosely based on actual events. During that time period everyone in the country was willing to sign up and fight for the freedom that was being trampled on in Europe and they didn’t want it to spread to our beloved country. Unlike what is going in this country now days everyone is afraid to join the military and serve their country to protect the freedoms that brave men and women have been fighting for, for over 250 years. This story is an epic tale of perseverance and bravery in the face of mortal danger; this is how we expect our service members to be no matter what.

The one question that remains is that is this a true story or is it just a fictional tale that is accompanied by the actual events of that great war. Somewhat depending on how you look at it. During that time there was what was known as the Sole Survivors Act that was put into effect to protect the sole surviving members of a family from military service if a sibling or parent had been killed in combat. This came to the forefront of everyone’s mind in the early days of the war when the five Sullivan brothers were killed in action during the battle of Guadalcanal in 1942 when their ship was sunk by a Japanese torpedo. So to say that help with the filming of this epic movie is an understatement.

This movie was loosely based on the story of the Niland Brothers during WWII, because in all actuality Private Ryan never actually existed but his story however, was based on an event that happened to one of the members of Easy Company from the 506th regiment of the 101st Airborne. For those that enjoy war movies or even mini series about war and books about war would recognize that company from the show Band of Brothers as well as the book of the same name from the Author Stephen Ambrose. “It began a few weeks after D-Day, when Easy Company went into defensive positions south of the French city of Carentan. One day, one of the company's members, a man named Fritz Niland, came down the line to say goodbye to his buddies because he was flying home. The story he related to his friends was tragic. Niland had had a brother named Bob in the 82nd Airborne, a division that also parachuted into Normandy with the 101st. Upon arrival at the 82nd, Niland learned that Bob had been killed on D-Day while manning a machine gun. So Fritz Niland went to the 4th Infantry Division to see his other brother and tell him of Bob's death. Upon arrival there, he discovered that that brother too had been killed on D-Day after landing on Utah Beach. By the time he got back to Easy Company, a priest was looking for him to tell him that his third brother, a pilot in the Chinese-Burma-India theatre, had been shot down in that same week.” http://www.sproe.com/n/fritz-niland.html

The biggest discrepancy in this movie is them stating that Pvt Ryan’s mother received the death letters or telegrams on the same day which was completely inaccurate. No for this movie to sit on the list of epic movies in the top 10 they had to use this in order to make it seem that it was truly a main priority to retrieve Private Ryan at all costs. This sets the table for a truly epic adventure for Tom Hanks and the eight men from his company that are searching for him. Along the way people are killed all in the name of Pvt James F. Ryan and there is tension in the ranks because they don’t feel that this one man is worth them risking their lives for. All in all it is truly an epic tale of perseverance and determination to accomplish a mission that is pretty much destined to fail right from the beginning. The biggest thing is the opening scene of the movie they are showing scenes from a French cemetery dedicated to those who gave their life in order to liberate the country and the final scene they take you back to the cemetery and at first you are expecting to see the gravestone of one Pvt James Francis Ryan when in fact it is the grave stone of Capt Miller who was played by Tom Hanks and the old man is actually James Ryan along side his children and grandchildren paying their respects to a man who they never met but saved the life of their father.

In summary this movie when you look at the list of all the movies on the top 10 when it comes to epic movies this one should be close to the top because it was truly a master piece in its own right and could be considered one of the greatest movies of the 1990’s. I truly believe that this movie would not have been the same if it were set in some other time and place or even with different actors in place. Even if they were to try and remake this movie like they have done with so many other good movies I really don’t think that it would have the same acceptance or reaction as it did.

...weakness in the referencing technique as secondary references should be used only on rare occasions, and attempts should be made to use primary sources where possible (Napier University 2002). Nonetheless this has not been done, perhaps because the guidelines from Nursing Times (2002) are not explicit about how they prefer references to be documented. The article as a whole has used little research findings and evidence and although current literature in this field is limited it has been used to back up the arguments rather than be reviewed. The appraisal of literature is a crucial factor in evidence-based practice (Thompson and Cullum 1999), although not the only factor. However other articles may have been reviewed but discarded from the final document. The researcher states that based on the findings her main aim is to improve the services available to the young people in this community and make them user friendly. The object of the study was to let the adolescents say what they thought mattered. There is no specific research question outlined, although the reader is given the impression that determining the right services for young people is what is being asked. The goal to fill a knowledge deficit, is what a good research question or aim should do (Cormack and Benton 2000). No hypothesis exists for this study and according to Polgar and Thomas (2000) this is advantageous, reducing the likelihood of bias. Although hypothesis can be ever changing to adapt to......

...movement to link together many parts of the violin's solos. A back-and-forth duet between the violin and cello is also used as transition material to move from the tonic to the dominant, but herein lies Mozart's genius: he also uses this same back-and-forth theme as the retransition material, moving from dominant back to tonic. (If you aren't familiar with some of these terms, you can get a quick crash-course on harmony in Lesson 6 of our Music Theory section.) The recapitulation goes over the established material, but this time embellishes it through decorative notes and rhythms. We are treated again to the beautiful melodies and ringing harmonies. Finally, the music makes its way towards the end, as its momentum slowly winds down into the final note. III: Menuetto. Allegretto This movement is in the popluar dance form of Minuet-Trio. The violin introduces the bobbing, chromatic theme of the Minuet right from the start... this evokes a spirited response from the rest of the quartet. Throughout the rest of the minuet, Mozart takes that saem chromatic theme through its paces... he transforms it, distributes it, and voices it in just about every feasible way... a device he likes to use is to pass it from one instrument to the other - listen for it! After rounding off the Minuet, the music travels into a more dancey Trio section, with a bit of an edge. The syncopated rhythms in the cello and the irregular volume spikes all combine to give this section a bit of an unbalanced......

A Critque of Martin Luther King

...A Critique of Martin Luther King, Jr.‘ Natural Law Theory Comp. 102 Date: 6/5/2013 Paradoxically, Martin Luther King, Jr., “Letter from the Birmingham City Jail,” Initially uses classical natural law theory to define his actions, but immediately thereafter contradicts a fundamental tenet of this theory and relies on a “weaker” version of natural law. In doing so, King must attempt to formulate a theory which justifies his illegal actions in view of his moral obligation to obey the law. King’s failure to distinguish between legal obligations and moral obligations yields a logical paradox in his final formation of natural law theory. However, Kings theory need not be completely rejected if his argument is slightly modified to reject the moral obligation to obey laws. King initially uses classical natural law theory as his rational basis to defend his actions. This theory has two main point of views, the first being,” Moral Validity; is a logically necessary condition for legal validity an unjust or immoral law being no law at all” followed by, “The moral order is part of the natural order moral duties being in some sense “read off ” from essences of purpose fixed (perhaps by God) in nature.” According to this theory, morality law, but law that equals morality by definition. Thus for King to use this theory, two requirements are implicit. He must assert that an unjust law is not really a law, and he must provide a moral theory to distinguish......

...Final Paper Paul Rosaschi MGT-337 Western International University Final I would like to do my final paper on a great leader; Abraham Lincoln, our 16th president. I believe he was a good leader because he possessed many qualities that qualified him as great leaders here are a few qualities he had: Capacity to Listen to Different Points of View Ability to Learn on the Job Ready Willingness to Share Credit for Success Ready Willingness to Share Blame for Failure Awareness of Own Weaknesses Ability to Control Emotions Know How to Relax and Replenish. Go Out into the Field and Manage Directly Strength to Adhere to Fundamental Goals Ability to Communicate Goals and Vision All these qualities I believe would have translated to any supervisory role he could occupy. While I think the presidency was what he was meant to do, these skills are vital to a successful leader. I am interested in him as a final paper because of everything he accomplished during his life, which was ended too soon. I will write about his success as well as his failures before and during his term.  Abe Lincoln could debate. Think about leaders and think about how they do with pubic speaking. Do we consider George W. as a good leader? No. But he can't speak either. Hitler was horrible man, but why did a whole country follow him. He could speak and articulate ideas......

The Liberty Amendments Book Critque

...property without compensation. I know that is in the Constitution already but this clarifies the rules. It states that if the government harms or interferes with your property you will be compensated for up to 10000 dollars after the value excides 10,000 dollars you will be compensated a percentage of that with its current value. I 100% agree with this amendment. If the government is going to interfere with my property rather it be the taking of the property, damaging my property, or even needing it to work on a new highway I expect to be compensated for what they need. I worked hard for what I have and if they think that should be able to just take that away I feel that is a violation of the 5th Amendment already in the Constitution. The final amendment I am going to talk about in this paper is the one that grants the states authority to directly amend the constitution. This gives the states more power than what they have now if they agree in a large group of at least two-thirds of them agreeing to it. I feel as if the federal government has way too much power as a ruling body right now. There should be a way for the states to be able to have their own way of amending a rule and to be able to make a new one. That being said this amendment also puts stipulations on the states if they do agree to form a new amendment like one the amendment is passed it has to stay for at the least of 6 years along with if more than one state likes it they have to have the exact same law.......
