One of the most important issue in the last 10 years to face the United States is the impending movement to revamp education. It’s not big secret that this system in place is no longer effective, with test scores nearly the bottom in comparison to fellow industrialize nations. One suggestion has been to take what works from Japan’s system, which scores routine test at or near the top of global results. It’s a great idea on paper, but with cultural differences and ideals might make a transition hard and could be met with resistance. However, taking the best elements from Japan’s system and combining those with our own might be the best solution available. A glance at the numbers make a compelling argument why adopting the Japanese way of approaching education. In a study done by the UCLA in 2008, it was revealed that of the high school students who graduate, an average of 2.4 million a year, 25% cannot read or write at the eighth-grade level. The standards being taught, which change on a year by year basis has made the system useless which allows students to be pushed through without learning the necessary skills need to advance to the next grade? Bush administration’s No Child Left Behind act is even more of an issue, and is the main reason why these numbers are now a sad reality. Even more disturbing the high number of high school dropouts, which stands at a rate of 33 percent each year. What makes this number more alarming is that without any type of program to flirt these numbers in, they account for the majority of the unemployment issue which also has been on the rise recently. It’s also provides the greatest ammunition to groups who agree that an education system overhaul is required, sooner rather than later. Which brings in the movement to take ideals from one of the highest rated educational systems in the free world, Japan.

...Assignment 6 Final Draft Following the horrific events of the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center, the United States has been unable to completely restore our trust in Middle Eastern nations and people for fear that they will plan another terrorist attack against us. In a post-9/11 world where Americans have become accustomed to associating Middle Easterners with terrorists, season 2 episode 1 of the television series 24 conveys this concept of otherness and the othering of Middle Easterners through its manipulation of time to show the dehumanization of Arabs as a threat to society and to stress the immediacy with which Americans must act against to such dangers. In this scene, 24 employs film analysis elements including windowing and time stamps to manipulate time in a way that emphasizes the immediacy of these actions and alters time as if it were real-time in order to show how Middle Easterners are often “othered” in a post-9/11 world. After the President of the United States has learned of the impending terrorist attack that is to occur in Los Angeles later that day, he says to a colleague that “there is a terrorist with his finger on a trigger, and [they’ve] got to get him.” While he is giving this statement, the episode employs a windowing effect in which the president is speaking in the top half of the screen and a Middle Eastern man, named Reza Naiyeer, is presented on the bottom half while he is driving in a convertible and speaking Arabic on the phone. The use...

...Educational Funding in America Matthew R. Ferry English- University Writing Essentials/147 1/11/2015 Carrie Kendall Educational Funding in America Most people these days are aware of the demand for more educational funding, but some still may be unaware of the need. Educational funds lack because of lack of priority in understanding importance of early education, because of political disagreements/delays, and because of states’ prioritization of budgets. There are a few main reasons that education funds lack in the present day and age. First of all, there is not enough focus on the importance of funding early education. Many say that the start of a student’s education is the most important. Also, the decisions regarding education fall on each of the individual states, therefore, there are many political figures who are involved and this can lead to policies being delayed significantly due to the indecision of where funds should come from. Lastly, the ways in which states prioritize their budgets also needs more attention, case and point, the lottery. According the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, 35 states in the U.S. have their educational funding cost per student lower in the 2013-2014 school year, than they did in the year before the recession. Education in America is taking a hit right from the beginning. In some towns in the U.S., the budget is so tight that if extra funding was granted at the Pre-K level then this would in...

...Tania Moshirian A10023469 USP 100 September 3rd, 2014 Website Final Draft The Collapse Detroit, Michigan: a city where more than 1.1 million people have vanished in the past 60 years. The city has dropped 25% in population just in the last 10 years. The city crumbled apart, which forced people to abandon their houses and businesses, leaving them with nothing. Even hospitals and religious structures were abandoned--and are still abandoned--with no demand to fill them. Ultimately, the auto industry was hit the hardest. With a systematic city, there was nowhere for the people to find jobs, since the auto industry was also hurting. More than 200,000 people worked in the auto industry in the mid-20th century.             Since the slow migration out of Detroit, the number fell to 100,000 people in the early 21st century. People have compared the migration out of Detroit to the whole city of San Francisco being deserted. More than 1.1 million people have left the city over the past decades. With economic downward spiral, Detroit hit its lowest point. With less than 750,000 people living in the city, it has been hard for local government to get money for the federal government for urban aid--leaving people still living in the city to suffer more. Detroit was named the poorest city in the nation, with one out of three people living below federal poverty.  (1) With so many people suffering, it led to many fires. Buildings and houses were burning rapidly. There were two...

And the melodies are divine!!" In another diary entry (April 1915) Sibelius wrote: "In the evening, working on the symphony. This important task which strangely enchants me. The Effects of War

...thousands of years, to achieve certain goals through the use of force. The major causes for war are resources, which can be territory, water, gold, minerals or animals; and ideologies: political beliefs, religion, philosophical differences. In other words, brutal outrageous kings, rulers, commanders and emperors possessed the purpose of having power and control over the whole world. But do these egoistic goals really bring benefit to humanity? Many people are sure that any war is unfair and should be stopped, as it brings only harm and damage. People are losing their homes, relatives, lives, but they aren’t even the part of the war. Many men want to refuse participating in war and killing people, but they must do it because of a draft. Millions of innocent people are dying, e.g. casualties in WWI were above 11 millions, in WWII – almost 60 millions, and in the War in Iraq – already near 107 thousands and the death count still increases every day. War also destroys the towns, earth, and nature and brings terrible chaos to the land, where it occurs. Many plants, factories, historical buildings are crushed down and there is the enormous harm to the environment. Mother Nature gives all men so many miracles, and in return it gets great suffering from such a horrible activity as war. Moreover, war affects every citizen, as everybody has to pay money for the soldiers, theirs travels and food. For example, in the WWI 196.5 billion of dollars was spent, in the WWII – $2...

Final Draft Mooney

...Paije Rush Professor Zeugin Workshop 100 December 8, 2011 “What Curves Our Thoughts?” How does Mooney intend to influence his audience /readers? People are conditioned by a lifetime of learning. Chris Mooney, author of “The Science of Why We Don’t Believe in Science”, explores how difficult it would be for people to accept new information. When a person is confronted with facts that challenge a long-held belief, the result is a strong defense to their position, a process called “motivated-reasoning” in which people may instead be ‘rationalizing’. Rationalizing can help explain how, as a society; we can remain bias over issues for which there are loads of evidence and information. This article is important based on the various perspectives of the learning process such as the president vaccine wars, science on climate changes, and global warming issues. Mooney uses these perspectives to his advantage to persuade his audience on the independence of beliefs and how it affects our thoughts. The theory behind “motivated reasoning” is that pre-existing beliefs, far more than any new facts brought to peoples’ attention tend to skew our thinking processes. These pre-existing thoughts color people’s most passionate and seemingly logical conclusions and beliefs. Mooney states, “‘Motivated-reasoning’ helps explain why we find groups so polarized over matters where the evidence is so unequivocal.”(pg.2) Mooney takes the time to not only cite organizations...
