“Finally, I Understand Why!”
Have you ever had a conversation with your significant other and walked away thinking, “was he even listening to me?” or “did he hear a word I was saying?”. Have you ever experienced a confrontation with your boyfriend, because he swears you meant something you said one way, when in fact you meant something totally different? Has your husband ever been telling a story to some of your friends, and when you cut in to help him support his story, he looks at you like your trying to take over? All of these scenarios can be extremely frustrating. If I had a dollar for everytime it happened to me, I’d be a millionaire, twice over.Yet, these are some of the conversational obstacles couples have to overcome, sometimes everyday. I, myself, got lucky. My brilliant English professor assigned a book for our class to read, and believe it or not, it has actually helped me. My conversations with my boyfriend, seem to flow a lot smoother now, thanks to some of the things I read in this book. This amazing book called You Just Don’t Understand by Deborah Tannen, talked about all of these issues. I can honestly say, I agreed with every point Tannen made in her book. Tannen talked about how men and women have different conversational styles, like when it comes to listening. Tannen says, “ When a woman is confronted with a man who does not say “yeah”---or much of anything else---she may conclude that he hasn’t been listening.”(142) Tannen also says, “To a man who expects a listener to be quietly attentive, a woman giving a stream of feedback and support will seem to be talking too much for a listener.”(142) Finally, Tannen says, “ To a woman who expects a listener to be active and enthusiastic in showing interest, attention, and support, a man who listens silently will seem not to be

...third time she would claim that she saw it. She sat in the police department for she had just witnessed a crime. Mollie was a girl of just 19. She felt it in her head again. Mollie knew what was coming next. It was a flash of light. A man. A woman. She didn’t understand. But she had seen it all before. There was always something about Mollie. She saw things, heard things and felt things that people would never understand. That’s why he found her interesting. Oscar had always found her interesting. Oscar was a man of just 22. He had been stationed in the city of Franklin to work as a detective at his young age. This was his first week and he had heard the stories she told. No one could deny them false but no one could find the truth either. Mollie always told the police she had seen it happen in a dream but they never believed her. Oscar found her attractive. She was curious and different and that’s what grabbed him in the start. He wanted the key to her mind. “She’s back, is she? Yelled the sheriff. “It’s okay, I’ll deal with her” smiled Oscar. As he walked over to the girl in blue, he felt overcome by her eyes. She looked nervous and scared. All Oscar wanted to do was go home to bed, but he needed to understand her mind. “Hello, I’m Detective Oscar Scott, I’m here to ask about the three...

Speech Self Evaluation

...Overall, I thought my speech was good. Definitely room for improvement and I realized a couple things that I need to work on. I was a little nervous, but that could have just been because of the amount of coffee I drank. So, yes I was nervous but I did enjoy giving the speech at the same time. When I went back to my seat I immediately felt like a weight was lifted off my shoulders. I was a little thrown off with the note cards I must say. I kept on looking to that particular corner of the room because I was paranoid. I thought I made it as clear as I could have when informing about my thesis, main points and supporting material however I would like to see my peer evaluation from someone who knew little or nothing about the topic before the speech. I would rate my speech at a 7/10 (10 being the highest) just because I know I can do better. I feel like I wasn’t as organized as I should have been. I felt like I crammed everything in towards the end just to stay within my time boundaries. At the same time, I think I accomplished my goal pretty well for my first informative speech. I understand it is a learning experience and I am excited to give my next one. I recall having a good tone of voice and making sure that I was clear as well as making good eye contact. I do remember in class when preparing for the speech to remember to get the audience involved to the questions I asked in the speech came in handy. Overall I thought that I delivered my message well. Things that I know...

...philosophy at your observation site/school? 3. Discuss this information with your HOSTS coordinator or other professional at your observations site. What are their thoughts on these issues? My Answers: 1. Redshirting I feel is only needed in some cases. Like for example if the child is having difficultly in school or with making friends within the classroom. If the social skills of a child aren’t developing as it should I could understand why that would be necessary but for children that have fine socials I don’t think it is needed. High-Stakes testing in Kindergarten seems a bit much for me to understand. I do think it is important to see and get a feel for how your students are progressing but I feel like a teacher can do that without a test in kindergarten. I feel it is their job as a teacher to know each child well enough to know where they stand. If children are to young to understand the consequences of the test their taking it shouldn’t be given. Children develop social skill at different paces through out the years I see nothing wrong with just letting them develop in kindergarten; save the testing for third grade when they actually understand why they are taking it. Kindergarten entrance age is a topic talked about very currently in education. I believe this can be a good and a bad...

...you know that I do know I was wrong for what I did, and I have served my punishment with ISS. I’m really supposed to be put out but you guys gave me another chance. And what is done is done and I’ve learned my lesson and I’m ready to move on and get back to class. I had been doing well with my work and behavior in ISS. But I can’t keep eating cheese sandwiches and I locked up in one room. ISS showed me how much I miss School and I will do anything to stay in school. And as a senior this does not look good on my school record. So I’m asking for another chance at going to homecoming and Pep-Rally mainly because this is my last year and my last year to enjoy with my class family. Also my little sister is running for homecoming freshman court and I would like to see her win. I’m not asking for much but another chance at everything. I know I was caught in the group shooting dice but I have never been in trouble for that type of thing I was just running with the wrong crowed and at the wrong time but I learned to start taking responsibility for myself. I understand I would not be in this situation if I was in class doing my work. I give my word that if you let me go, I would not get caught up in any more mess. I’m a good student with good grades and I just got on track this year and I’m ready to continue that. This was just minor set back for a major come back. And I promise things a get better with in time. But I willing to stand as a young man a own up to what I have done and own...

...To really understand the significance of how the military has molded me into the Sailor that I am today, I must reveal first some insight into the person I was before I left for basic training. When I graduated from high school in 2000 I was indestructibly ready to take on anything that came my way. I had managed to have had a somewhat decent unsheltered life in that my parents provided a warm and loving environment for my siblings and myself. We experienced all of the normal trials and tribulations as any of the other kids that grew up in the neighborhood with us. After graduating from high school in South Eastern Georgia, I wanted to get out of the small town of Sylvania and go see the world. I had originally planned to take a year or so off to figure out exactly what it was that I wanted to do with my life. My dad did not like that at all, but my mother was super excited. After being out of school for just a few months I began to get bored with bouncing from city to city. What was I going to do? Then right out of the blue it came to me. I wanted to see the world not just the cities on my bucket list. So I decided to go see a Navy recruiter. I swear that recruiter must have seen me coming from a mile away! I did not have the first clue of what I was doing, and the only thing that I can remember about this guy was that he did not look like Navy material and his last name was Rudolf like the reindeer. So as I begin to sign my life away to the Navy panic began to...

...The main attributes I most admire about myself is that I’m kind, honest, responsible, determined, and also being able to create great relationships with others. I have proven to not only others, but to myself that I can achieve anything. An anecdote that recently happened was when I was at Walmart. I was with my aunt buying groceries. As we were paying, I noticed an elderly woman was having trouble putting her groceries back in her cart. As she was dropping them, a part of me knew I had to help her or I would feel guilty and I ended up helping her. Another anecdote would be during school in class. During lessons, there are students who actually are focused on the lesson, but never fully understand it. If I understand it, I do whatever I can to help guide them through it step by step. My grades are my top priority at school because when it comes down to it that is what I will be judged on, not to mention my character. Character is everything. As stated in the dictionary, it is said that character is a “complex of mental and ethical traits“, that those traits, or qualities, are “distinctive to an individual” and that they are “built into an individual’s life.” It is those character qualities, those character traits that determine a person’s response in any given situation. I set goals and put in the time and effort to accomplish them. I believe that NHS does great things overall, and that I can play a part in furthering the impression that is made here. The National Honor Society...

...Fatoumatta Jaiteh ENGL 1312: Section 2 Dr. West-Fort October 1, 2013 A Response to "BARBIE Q" by Sandra Cisneros "Barbie Q!" I did not understand the title of the story at first but to my understanding, i thought the writer wanted to use the word "Barbie" instead of "Barbeque" to make it look "posh" and feminine. As we read the story in class, i got a better and deeper undstanding of the whole moral of the story and why she used the word "Barbie". When i saw "Titties" pg (339) i was like "wow," the writer is bold and no wonder they banned it. It seemed like two girls were playing with the dolls and making remarks about their dresses and comparing how glamorous they look. We were all kids at some point so i get that. These barbie dolls send negative messages to the children of today. When kids play with them, they tend to know about make up, boyfriend, the glitz and the glam etc at an early stage. Yes i understand it's good for a female to look good but not at age 3. You can look good for yourself. Some females are more secure when they wear make up some are not. I won't call myself a "feminist" but i stand and support womens rights. These kids might want to look like barbie at some point. Well, it's already happening e.g "Toodlers & Tiara's" is a perfect example of how mothers of today teach their kids to believe that if you do not wear tons of hair, jewelry, exposing dresses, heels & make up, you are not beautiful enough and society will not appreciate your natural...

The Sounds of Sonny's Blues

...of his character we see at the end of the story. Baldwin effectively uses the first-person narration of Sonny’s brother in order to convey the theme of communication. Throughout the entire story of Sonny’s Blues, the narrator and his brother interact through exchanging words countless times. The question posed is whether or not the narrator can truly hear what his brother is saying to him. Through an examination of the narration style and the ways in which the characters are composed, we can see how Baldwin develops the theme of communication throughout Sonny’s Blues. Directly at the start of Sonny’s Blues we can identify the first-person narration. “I read about it in the paper, in the subway, on my way to work. I read it, and I couldn’t believe it, and I read it again.” (p. 75) Over and over again Baldwin uses “I” and “my” allowing the reader to easily detect the first-person narration style. The limited first-person narration will be crucial in the development of the theme of communication due to reader’s abilities to know narrator’s thoughts and feelings, but not Sonny’s. We know that the narrator is limited and not omniscient due to the fact mentioned before; the narrator does not have the ability to know what Sonny is thinking. This inability to know what Sonny is thinking is pivotal in the way Baldwin builds the theme of communication between the brothers. Due to the fact that the narrator is limited to his own thoughts, we see the brothers come into conflict...

...Shisheng Huang Dr. Logan English 300 online 25 June 2015 All We Need Is a Push Writing has never been an easy subject for me. Lt alone the fact that English was not my first language. Back in my old country, even writing in the language that I was growing up with was no so easy for me either. At the younger age, I could never understand, why would people take a simple idea and expand it into hundreds of or even thousands of word. To the younger me, it was just like telling a same idea to someone over and over again. As I grew older, now that I am looking back, I realize I was just being lazy. Like I was to everything else in my life: always try to find a simpler and faster solution to a problem. If there was anything my high school English teacher has taught me that I would remember for life, that is, just like pretty much everything else in life. To be able to write a good piece of paper, it will require a lot of hard work. Unlike the teachers from my old high school, my English teacher of the high school I was graduated from, Mr. Roger has a lot more experience dealing with ESL student. Because of the district that our school was in. There are a ton of students that came from many different country around the world, which gave our school more change to get more experience on dealing with different level student. Not only Mr. Roger’s balded head and face that full of beard draw student attention to him, but the way he teach class also get our attention easily. He always...

...APPLYING LEADERSHIP THEORIES ESSAY ASSIGNMENT Phyllis Mathis Grand Canyon University: EDA - 575 September 25, 2013 I am supposed to do a research depicting how different leadership theories apply to your chosen school setting. The school I chose to write about while taking the course studies is Edith Robinson Christian Academy in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. I’m currently the owner just as well as the Principal of the school. The grade levels we deal with are from K though 12. There are different theories you can choose from but the problem arise on which one fits your program the best, we are to pick a minimum of three different leadership article from Grand Canyon University elibrary. So the three leadership theories I chose for the school are; Implicit Leadership Theories (ILTs), Social Cognitive Theory and Grounded Theory of Applied Critical Thinking in Leadership. Edith Robinson Christian Academy deal with a diverse group of youth and majority of the students are inner city kids that come from different areas in Broward County. These students have already been rejected by the public school system because of their behavior but the truth be told they are so behind with their education until its mind bogging. Majority of these students are at least four to five grades behind. The different leadership theories I pick hopefully they will help me with an answer to the solution as well as the problem.
