M&M Proposition 1
The Modigliani-Miller theorem forms the basis of modern thinking on capital structure. The theorem states that under a certain market price process, in the absence of taxes, bankruptcy cists, agency costs and asymmetric information, an in an efficient market, the value of a firm is unaffected by how the firm is financed. Whether the firm’s capital is raised by issuing stock or selling debt does not affect the value of the firm. This theory is also referred to as the capital structure irrelevance principle, which we have already looked at in previous seminar discussions. There are two propositions which were discussed by Modigliani and Miller. The first proposition states that the value if a firm does not depend on its capital structure. An example would be if two firms with the same business operations and similar kind of assets, where to be assessed after using either stocks or debt to finance the firm of s. On the left side their balance sheets, these firms will look the same, only difference being the right side, i.e. the liabilities and how they finance business activities. M&M proposition 1 therefore says that how the debt and equity is structured in a corporation is irrelevant as the value of the firm is determined by real assets and not its capital structure.
Implications of this proposition firstly revolve around the issue of changing capital structure. Assuming that the three conditions identified by M&M apply and considering a company which is financed entirely with equity. The annual cash flows of R100, which are expected to continue forever, if an appropriate discount rate is 10%, we can calculate the value of the firm to perpetuity as PVA=100/0.1= R1000. Since the firm is financed entirely with equity, the equity is worth R1000. If management was considering changing the capital structure to 80% equity and 20% debt, then

Businessplanning

...attracting potential finance of startup or expansion. I believe that the key question that the author is addressing is how do we effectively plan for the future? In order to do this effectively your plan has to include four key elements: Strategic, operational, financial budgeting and forecasting. I would have to say that the Business Plan Format was the most important part of the article. It describes the various elements of the plan and what those sections should include. The main inferences in this article are the importance of a strong Management and Executive Summary to impress potential investors. The authors go on to state that the “characteristics of a good plan were that it was well written, organized into sections, and included detailed financial projections” (Nunn & McGuire, 2010). Key concept of this article is to develop strategic plans that will guide management with a road map to successfully running the business as well as give reassurance to investors that you will be a good custodian of their funding. The main underlying assumption is that the person writing this plan is indeed qualified to run the particular venture they are pursuing. However, if we follow these basic guidelines, anyone should be able to write an effective plan that will attract investors. The authors...

Motivation

...BUSINESS ASSIGNMENT on Motivation Introduction The word motivation came from Latin word “movere” which means push to action, (Source). Motivation is giving people the desire and energy to make an effort to reach their goal such as a job. There are a numbers of motivational theories and this assignment will look at how intrinsic and extrinsic motivators can affect employee’s motivation. Business will motivate their staff to achieve objectives in order for the company to reach their aims. However workers are motivated by different things, therefore this assignment will start with explaining and discussing motivational basic psychological triggers and the main initial theorists: F.W. Taylor (1856-1917), Elton Mayo (1880-1949), Maslow (1908-1970), Herzberg (1923-2000). Motivation We learn not only because we want to learn for satisfaction of learning but also because we are rewarded for learning and it enables us to achieve other things that we want, starting with food, a home and to some extent safety as well as status and self-esteem. Psychologists have come to separate between two main categories of motivation, intrinsic and extrinsic: Intrinsic motivation takes place when someone gets satisfaction from an activity itself without threats or rewards from external factors or influences. Intrinsic motivation is only due to the person’s desire or will to participate in a task without any promise of a reward. A good example will be “A student's intrinsic interest in schooling...
