Everybody in the world has a life. They get to live their life with basic freedoms that make up their lives. Unfortunately, some people have a life where they have laws that go against their basic freedoms. In Loung Ung’s memoir First They Killed My Father, she introduces the unfair, invading laws that went against the way she lives her life. In Loung Ung’s memoir First They Killed My Father, she was deprived the right to have an education. For example, in First They Killed My Father the text conveys, “Children in our society will not attend school just to have their brains cluttered with useless information. They will have sharp minds and fast bodies if we give them hard work. The Angkar cannot tolerate laziness. Hard work is good for everyone. Any kind of schooling carried out by anyone without the government’s approval is strictly forbidden” (Ung 318). This evidence demonstrated that when under the Angkar power, children will not go to school but will …show more content…
In First They Killed My Father the text shows that, “Wearing colorful clothes is forbidden. You will take off the clothes you have on and burn those as well. Bright colors only serve to corrupt your mind. You are no different from anyone else here and from now on will dress in black pants and shirts. A new set will be issued to you once a month” (Ung 316). The text is explaining that the Khmer Rouge are putting everybody into one tight bubble where they see everybody as the same and no different from one another. They want everybody to be normal and dull with no eye-opening looks or stares. This prevents the villagers and newcomers from expressing themselves in vibrant colors but instead dull, shady colors. Furthermore, they will be given one new set of clothes each month and while in between those months are long working days where people are sweating. No wonder they felt like slaves to

Oedipus Essay

...Oedipus the King: Part I Analysis The audience learns about everything in this somewhat short sequence of events and stories. The audience as well goes on to figure out that all the prophecies given by the oracles and Teiresias were completely true, from the murder of his own father under his sword to even having children and marrying his own mother. Although the audience learns most, if not all as to what his life contained, we as well realize that Oedipus is completely oblivious to all these facts and completely unaccepting of the mere concept of things such as this being remotely conceivable. In this section of Part I in Oedipus the King, Sophocles gave the audience/readers some major information towards the plot and how the rest of the play will proceed. One of the biggest revelations that occurs in this section is when the shepherd who was revealed to be the only survivor of the slaughter of the crossroads refuses to go anywhere the city or especially near Oedipus and specifically asks Jocasta if he can be sent to the fields and never see that place ever again. Jocosta stated that the shepherd, “...came home again and saw you king and Laius was dead, he came to me and touched my hand and begged that I should send him to the fields to be my shepherd and so he might see the city as far off as he might. So I sent him away. He was an honest man, as slaves go, and was worthy of far more than what he asked of me.” The shepherd knew that he was the murderer and did...

Hamlet

...Plot Overview A ghost resembling the recently deceased King of Denmark stalks the ramparts of Elsinore, the royal castle. Terrified guardsmen convince a skeptical nobleman, Horatio, to watch with them. When he sees the ghost, he decides they should tell Hamlet, the dead King's son. Hamlet is also the nephew of the present King, Claudius, who not only assumed his dead brother's crown but also married his widow, Gertrude. Claudius seems an able King, easily handling the threat of the Norwegian Prince Fortinbras. But Hamlet is furious about Gertrude's marriage to Claudius. Hamlet meets the ghost, which claims to be the spirit of his father, murdered by Claudius. Hamlet quickly accepts the ghost's command to seek revenge. Yet Hamlet is uncertain if what the ghost said is true. He delays his revenge and begins to act half-mad, contemplate suicide, and becomes furious at all women. The Lord Chamberlain, Polonius, concludes that Hamlet's behavior comes from lovesickness for Ophelia, Polonius's daughter. Claudius and Gertrude summon two of Hamlet's old friends, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, to find out what's wrong with him. As Polonius develops a plot to spy on a meeting between Hamlet and Ophelia, Hamlet develops a plot of his own: to have a recently arrived troupe of actors put on a play that resembles Claudius's alleged murder of Old Hamlet, and watch Claudius's reaction. Polonius and Claudius spy on the meeting between Ophelia and Hamlet, during which Hamlet flies into a rage against...

These incidents that were quite shocking in this town, and the people were too scared to go outside of their homes. Based on detailed cases analysis, the detective Richard, who was well known in Police Department, judged that these cases were more likely to be done by a certain person or a same group, because these series of cases were stupendously similar to each other. All the decedents were surgeons from many hospitals in this town. And all the surgeons were killed through some sharp tools like scalpels, and their corpses were abandoned in the wild field by the murderer. These incidents caused a impact on all the surgeons in this town, and they felt frightened. They did not know if these nightmares would fall upon their heads. The only one point that confused Richard was that all the crime scenes were left in a undisturbed wild field. He wondered if the surgeons who had been killed had appeared obediently followed the murderer to the wild field without a struggle. The more surprising thing was that policemen could not find any trace of wrestling in the crime scenes. Why surgeons did not try any possible way to resist with the murderer? Were they are bewitched by the murderer? Multitudinous questions plagued Richard. When it came to the surgeons...

Comparing The Hero's Journey In The Hero With A Thousand Faces By Joseph Campbell

...The call to adventure starts the hero’s journey. The hero begins in a state of normality until some information is given to the them, usually from a herald or mysterious figure, that leads the hero into the unknown (Hall 2017). After receiving the call, the hero will encounter their supernatural aid. This is the first encounter the hero will make on his journey. It is a “protective figure” who will aid the hero in their journey (Hall 2017). In this play, the ghost of king Hamlet starts Hamlet’s journey and is his supernatural aid. According to “An Analysis of a Hero’s Journey in William Shakespeare’s Play Hamlet”: Hamlet’s heroic “Journey begins with the ordinary world in which Hamlet is in a very melancholy mood due to the untimely death of his beloved father” (2). Then Hamlet “...follows Horatio to the woods where he does meet the ghost of his father. His father then tells him that his death was at the hands of Claudius and that Hamlet must avenge” (3). This is Hamlet’s call to adventure. Before hearing this request, Hamlet lived a normal life, studying in England. Until, a mysterious ghost prompted him to kill his uncle for revenge. Hamlet has never, presumably, killed anyone in the past, and the ghost is expecting him to kill. The ghost is also his supernatural aid. The ghost only directly conversed with Hamlet twice. One was in the forest where the ghost told Hamlet that a...

Literary Analysis On The Great Gatsby

...A Analysis is the practice of looking closely at small parts to see how they affect the whole, but a Literary analysis focuses on how plot plus structure, character, setting, and many other techniques. That's what I intend to achieve in this essay about The Great Gatsby. In the novel The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald depicts the theme of wealth can breed carelessness in my own opinion. Using the literary techniques of point of view, juxtaposition, and foreshadowing to create meaning in his classic work. The word “careless” sums up Nick's friends as I think and also what the author says in the book himself. For example I feel like Gatsby’s whole life trying to contract his money and status so that he could reach a certain position in life. This is what motivated him to move to west egg to be right across the lake from Daisy, making as much money by doing anything possible. I felt in his position Daisy wanted and needed a man that was wealthy so he changed himself to win her back. At a point him and Daisy were perfect for eachother when he was unwealthy, but their affair foreshadowed that it was a doomed relationship showing that she only wanted him for his money now. As we can see now, the relationship was never doomed at the end for Daisy as she runs away, as her secondary lover dies. Another...

Comparative Analysis: Hamlet and the Lion King

...Comparative analysis: Hamlet and The Lion King Hamlet is a 1990 drama film based on a tragic play with the same name, written by William Shakespeare. On the other side The Lion King is an animated musical movie. Walt Disney Pictures released the movie in 1994. As the movie Hamlet, The Lion King was also influenced by Shakespeare’s play, Hamlet. Both the movies are about revenging the death of a cherished family member but in different ways. Since a long time the idea of revenge has existed in our human nature. It has been our instinct to take back for a person that has been hurt. Today we find that many literary works uses revenge as a theme for the plot but how it is shown depends from a character to another. Hamlet and The Lion King are two superb examples. In the castle of Elsinore in Denmark, prince Hamlet sees his father’s ghost. Through the ghost Hamlet learns that his own brother, Claudius, who wants the thrown to Denmark had murdered his father and married his dead brothers wife, the queen Gertrude. The spirit tells Hamlet to, “revenge his foul and most unnatural murder” (1.5.25 Shakespeare) and Hamlet obeys the spirit’s wishes. He then begins to seek more evidence on Claudius and his betrayal towards his brother. Hamlet enters into a deep melancholy and appears to be in madness, which makes Claudius and Gertrude worry about his erratic behavior. They employ Hamlet’s friends, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern to watch over him and to discover the cause of his...

Happiest Refugee

...------------------------------------------------- Class Notes on The Happiest Refugee Chapter 1 Possibly the most prominent reason why the first chapter of Anh Do’s “The Happiest Refugee” reflects the ideas of an outsider is how war has changed Anh and his families lives. “The year is 1976 and the Vietnam war has just ended”, “When the war ended her two older brothers, high- ranking paratroopers who fought alongside American and Australian soldiers, were put into communist re-education camps” and “My grandfather was in the army, so Grandma was left to look after ten kids on her own in a little hut” explain how the war has torn Anh’s family apart and has deeply effected how his father and mother lived throughout their childhood. When Anh’s Father is forced to almost single-handedly take care of his brothers, it builds and changes his personality and makes him far more responsible. When Anh’s uncles are put into a re-education camp, Anh’s father shows the leadership qualities and courage that he built over his childhood to free them from slavery. Chapter 1. From the start of the chapter, we can see the traits of an outsider, namely being a non-evident sense of belonging. When the communist guards were harassing the young lady; she was an outsider as she was being ostracised and segregated from the rest of the group in a nasty and threatening way. This was evidenced in the text from the quote “ ‘Lift up your trousers’ the guard demands. The girl lifts her black cotton...

Pi’s unique background gives life to all the symbolizing and double meanings, explain why the second story is true. Life of Pi is book with deep detail and description, giving a very full pictures. I think Martel uses this to his own advantage. Giving us such a layered story, makes the ending even more of a crash. With such realistic details, it seems impossible for anything other to be true. Pi also seems like a whole and true character, it makes no sense for him imagine it (Shmoop 1). Not only until I sat back ran through my notes did I realise it was staring me in the face the whole story. Almost the whole first part is about the abstraction of religion. The fact that he believes and worships three religions just screams imagination. Pi’s beliefs run wild throughout the entire book, giving his character flesh and blood. In part one, Pi tells us about his childhood. His father owned and ran a zoo, giving Pi a deep...

...imperatives into account. It says “always treat humanity whether in your own person or in that of another, never simply as a means, but always at the same time as an end”. On the retributivist view, legal punishment is justified as a means of making those who are responsible for a crime or harm pay for it. According to the retributivist view, payment must to be made in some way that is equivalent to the crime or harm done. There are two arguments, proportional equivalency and egalitarian equivalency. For proportional equivalency, one is required to pay back something proportional. Egalitarian equivalency which is another view of retributivist holds that what is required in return is something identical or almost identical to what was taken. 2.
