Lead-In/Hook: Dyslexia. It’s a disability that 70 to 80% of people who can’t read are likely to have. Like any girl, Ally Nickerson has to face many problems, and one of them include dyslexia. Book title, author, & genre: This book is called “Fish in a Tree” by Lynda Mullaly Hunt. It is a realistic fiction book. Protagonist: In this book, the main character is Ally Nickerson. One of Ally Nickerson’s character traits is determined. When her teacher offers to help Ally with her reading, she is very determined to learn every word. Another character trait is brave. Ally has hid her secret of not being able it read for many years. In the book, she has to face telling her friends her secret. She has dyslexia. Not only do August and Ally both struggle throughout their life in school, but they both have friends that stand up for them and support them. An example in “Fish in a Tree” is when Ally’s friend Albert stands up for her when some high-school bullies come and tease her. An example from the book “Wonder” is when August’s friend Summer stood up for him when Julian (a bully in their class) was teasing him. In both books, the authors make the main characters have good friends that stand up for their friends differences. One difference between the two books is that in the book “Fish in a Tree”, the Ally’s brother has dyslexia too, while in the book “Wonder”, August is the only one with a different appearance. In the book “Fish in a Tree”, Ally’s brother gets to join in on the private lessons with Ally’s teacher. In these private lessons, Ally gets help from her teacher and slowly learns how to read with dyslexia. Unlike the book “Fish in a Tree”, August doesn’t get lessons to help change his face, but learns how stand up for himself against bullies and strive

Persuasive Essay On Dyslexia

...Dyslexia is commonly thought of as a learning disability. People think they cannot read or they are unintelligent and will not amount to anything. However, many successful people have dyslexia, Charles Schwab, Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, and Albert Einstein just to name a few (eida.org, Buchanan). Most people would think these people had to overcome dyslexia to become successful but many would argue that they are successful because they have dyslexia. Though many people see dyslexia as a disability, the condition is actually beneficial. Dyslexia can make school in the early years hard. Dyslexics are not good at reading, spelling, and long division. In addition, repetitive tasks are hard for people with dyslexia (Buchanan). In general the way things are taught in Elementary school makes it hard for dyslexics to learn because dyslexics have a different way of learning. Fernette Eide, writer of The Dyslexic Advantage: Unlocking the Hidden Potential of the Dyslexic Brain, said “there’s a real clash between what they can really do well at this makes it very hard for them to thrive in the...

...really enjoy. I never knew that a simple trip to China could open my eyes to many new careers like history, finance, economics, and business. A part from my trip to China I have always been very involved in music. I have played the violin since I was in fourth grade. I have never lived a day without music, and I know I don’t want to. Those future 10-15 years I hope to be full of music. I want to continue to be a part of performing arts and minor or major in music. STATEMENT#2 As the co-president of the Tree Huggers and Cat and Dog Huggers club, I have been tasked with coordinating many of the events. The clubs were founded by Mr. and Mrs. Slagel in order to create a strong recycling program on campus as well as do community service for animals. I was lucky enough to watch Jack Johnson at the same time while helping the people understand how the specific recycling had to be done. Yes, there were some people who would drop things in the wrong bin, causing us to have to fish out the trash. It was really cool that almost every food and beverage booth had used recyclable utensils, plates, napkins, and cups. Jack Johnson became a role model because he was donating most of the earnings from the concert to help others. A part from the concert, I have organized events with the Kapolei Petco and organized club events and fundraisers regarding the animals. Before, I had done many Petco visits to help Paws For Life and a Maui adoption clinic get any of their current animals adopted. I...

Nursery Rhymes Compilation (Unedited)

...lullaby is thought to come from "lu, lu" or "la la" sound made by mothers or nurses to calm children, and "by by" or "bye bye", either another lulling sound, or a term for good night.[3] Until the modern era lullabies were usually only recorded incidentally in written sources. The Roman nurses' lullaby, "Lalla, Lalla, Lalla, aut dormi, aut lacta", is recorded in a scholiumon Persius and may be the oldest to survive.[4] Many medieval English verses associated with the birth of Jesus take the form of a lullaby, including "Lullay, my liking, my dere son, my sweting" and may be versions of contemporary lullabies.[3] However, most of those used today date from the 17th century. For example, a well known lullaby such as "Rock-a-bye, baby on a tree top", cannot be found in records until the late-18th century when it was printed by John Newbery (c. 1765).[3] Early nursery...

...4 Negligence: duty of care Learning objectives At the end of this chapter you should be able to: • have an overview of the history of negligence; • describe the function of duty of care in negligence; • appreciate the way duty of care has been defined and developed; and • apply the principles of duty of care in the areas of omissions and liability of public bodies. 04-Bermin-Chap04.indd 42 2/6/2008 7:39:32 PM 4.1 Introduction Negligence began to be recognised as a tort in its own right around the beginning of the nineteenth century. Before that time, the dominating action for personal injury was the writ of trespass. Trespass was initially concerned only with direct acts, however, during the nineteenth century the focus shifted to the distinction between intentional wrongs (trespass) and the unintentional (negligence). As we have seen, negligence was originally described in terms of a duty imposed by law and thus it will be seen that duty is one of the three key elements of negligence today. Negligence evolved as a means of loss-shifting at a time when there was little or no insurance or state welfare provision. The industrial revolution in the nineteenth century brought with it increased risks of injury to those working in factories, mines, quarries, and other dangerous situations. The development of railway transportation and mass production dramatically increased the potential for many people to be affected by the faulty conduct of strangers, at the same time...

Phenomenon Keirsey and Bates's Please Understand Me, first published in 1978, sold nearly 2 million copies in its first 20 years, becoming a perennial best seller ~ll ov~r ~he world. Advertised only by word of mouth, the book became a favo~te tralmng and counseling guide in many institutions-government, church, buslnes.s-and colleges across the nation adopted it as an auxiliary text in a dozen dIfferent departments. Why? Perhaps it was the user-friendly way that Please Understand Me helped people find their personality style. Perhaps it was the simple accuracy of Keirsey's portraits of temperament and character types. Or perhaps it was the book's essential messag~: that members of families and institutions are OK, even though they are fundamentally different from each other, and that they would all do well to appreciate their differences and give up trying to change others into copies of themselves. Now: P"IS' IllIIrstalllll H For the past twenty years Professor Keirsey has continued to investigate personality differences-to refine his theory of the four temperaments and to define the facets of character that distinguish one from another. His findings form the basis of Please Understand Me II, an updated and greatly expanded edition of the book, far more comprehensive and coherent than the original, and yet with much of the same easy accessibility. One major addition is Keirsey's view of how the temperaments differ in the intelligent roles they...

Introduction to Psychology

...TPS 101: INTRODUCTION TO PSYCHOLOGY TPS 101 serves as the beginning course in psychology; as such, it is broad in scope. The course will introduce students to the history of psychology, and current paradigms and theories. We will cover neuroscience, sensation, perception, memory, and language, stress and health psychology, personality and social psychology, intelligence, and developmental psychology. Because of time limitations, none of these topics can be covered in great depth. The reference textbooks and the material presented in class will serve as the primary sources for the material to be covered. INTRODUCTION TO THE STUDY OF PSYCHOLOGY Psychology is the scientific study of behaviour and mental processes. It is an academic and applied discipline involving the scientific study of mental processes and behaviour. Psychology also refers to the application of such knowledge to various spheres of human activity, including problems of individuals' daily lives and the treatment of mental illness. It is largely concerned with humans, although the behaviour and mental processes of animals can also be part of psychology research, either as a subject in its own right (e.g. animal cognition and ethnology), or somewhat more controversially, as a way of gaining an insight into human psychology by means of comparison (including comparative psychology). Origins of the psychology Near the end of 19th century things started drawing together. Questions raised by philosophers were being...

...C h a p t e r 1 Prewriting GETTING STARTED (OR SOUP-CAN LABELS CAN BE FASCINATING) For many writers, getting started is the hardest part. You may have noticed that when it is time to begin a writing assignment, you suddenly develop an enormous desire to straighten your books, water your plants, or sharpen your pencils for the fifth time. If this situation sounds familiar, you may find it reassuring to know that many professionals undergo these same strange compulsions before they begin writing. Jean Kerr, author of Please Don’t Eat the Daisies, admits that she often finds herself in the kitchen reading soup-can labels—or anything—in order to prolong the moments before taking pen in hand. John C. Calhoun, vice president under Andrew Jackson, insisted he had to plow his fields before he could write, and Joseph Conrad, author of Lord Jim and other novels, is said to have cried on occasion from the sheer dread of sitting down to compose his stories. To spare you as much hand-wringing as possible, this chapter presents some practical suggestions on how to begin writing your short essay. Although all writers must find the methods that work best for them, you may find some of the following ideas helpful. But no matter how you actually begin putting words on paper, it is absolutely essential to maintain two basic ideas concerning your writing task. Before you write a single sentence, you should always remind yourself that 1. You have some valuable ideas to tell your reader,...
