The title alone reveals to the reader that this is no ordinary fishing tale. Hemingway’s hero in the novel, the fisherman, Santiago, begins with adversity. He lives in poor conditions and has not caught fish for eight-four days. One might think of taking up a different line of work or sign up for a fishing class. But, Santiago remains optimistic and true to his passion. The adversity of the ocean, the fish, and the sharks are used by Hemingway to create a noble hero. Life is unpredictable and can make reaching your goals seem out of reach. Santiago endures the adversity brought on by the sea with courage and pride. Santiago lives very poorly and tells everyone he eats fish at home knowing that he has none to eat. He would rather go hungry than be shamed. Our hero bears the adversity of being a “salao” or the worst kind of unlucky. Santiago never accepting defeat begins again every day with a positive attitude that it will be a better day. These fish are then put into bags and exported to places like North America and Europe where they are sold for premium prices. The process of cyanide fishing is used to capture fish and invertebrates, but is damaging to many corals and juvenile reef species. Oil on canvass paintings are some of my favorite pieces of art. The oil colors are able to blend, shade, and flow together very well. This combination helps create details and depth in the paintings. Also, the oil paint used by the hands of talented artists is able to show reflections and shadows in water. In the painting, “Boy Fishing”, there is a path where a young boy is fishing with a cane pole. There is a railing running along the path and the water is on the other side of it. The boy seems patient and still, as he leans against the brown rustic railing. The water also appears still and motionless. The shadows from overhanging tree limbs reflect dark and light spots scattered across the pond. There is little activity in the painting and the fishing doesn’t look too exciting. ...As an avid shore fisherman who enjoys fishing, I have the unique opportunity to choose between two similar, but two very different, types of fishing. These two types of fishing are fresh water fishing and salt water fishing. With that being said, in the state where I reside, there are two distinct attitudes towards fishing. There are those anglers who prefer fresh water fishing, and there are those anglers who prefer salt water fishing. Both types of fishing ultimately deal with utilizing a fishing pole, fishing line and bait (or a fishing lure) to catch fish. However, in the same way they are similar; in contrast, they are both very much different. In a fresh water lake, the water rises with the amount of rainfall and falls due to evaporation and drainage; on the other hand, ocean the water rises and falls with the lunar tide. Unlike fresh water fishing, where an angler would use “lighter” fishing tackle due to catching smaller fish, salt water fishing requires much “heavier” tackle due to the vast difference in size from fresh water fish to salt water fish. For instance, the State record for a fresh water largemouth bass caught in a lake is 10 pounds 14 ounces; whereas, a Great White shark can weigh more then a car!
