The Absolute True Diary of a Part-Time Indian

On The Outside Looking In
Being an outsider in a new place is never easy. One has to do twice the work to make friends, and fit in. While reading the novel, I could relate to the character of Arnold Spirit. The obstacles he faced going to a new school, with a different culture reminded me of struggles I faced myself when I started school in America. Trying to “fit in” to a culture foreign of your own is especially hard when you’re a teenager like Arnold, and you haven’t even figured out who you really are yet yourself. Fortunately, time goes on, and we overcome our battles eventually.
They say “sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” My very own name used to wound my self-esteem. During my several years at elementary school, I struggled to fit in with all of my classmates and friends. The thing I had the biggest problem with was being Bosnian, and the way my name was spelled. S-E-J-L-A, pronounced “shayla.” Every morning before we’d start class, the whole school would have to listen to the announcements on the loudspeaker made by the principle. They included the pledge of allegiance, the weather, special events for the day/week, and birthdays. That meant that the whole school would hear the principle butcher my name, on my birthday, so the entire world could laugh at me. I used to always go home crying on those days after school and yelling at my mom asking her why I had to be different, and why she couldn’t have given me a “normal” name that was easier to pronounce. Naturally, everyone goes through tough times in life. Eventually, as I got older I learned to be proud of my culture and where I came from, and I finally started to love that my name was different. As a kid or teenager, it isn’t easy being an outsider. People will pick on you every chance they get.
Sherman Alexie portrays Arnold Spirit, or Junior, as a Native American young boy trying to find himself and fit in between two different cultures. Arnold seemed to always feel like a stranger, no matter where he was. “I was half Indian in one place and half white in the other (Alexie, p.118).” On the reservation, he was pressured to be like the rest of the Indians, and at his new high school, he felt pressured to blend in with his white classmates. On the Indian reservation there was very little hope for success to anyone. It was full of alcoholics, violence, poverty, and death.
Arnold was the first to leave the rez in the search for hope elsewhere. He was excited about attending high school until he was given a math book his mom used when she was in high school. This made Junior furious with the reservation. He couldn’t believe that the reservation couldn’t even afford new books for the students. Out of anger, Arnold threw his book at Mr. P. A few days later the two had a heart-to-heart where Mr. told Arnold “The only thing you kids are being taught is how to give up (Alexie, p.42).” So he suggested that Arnold go as far away from the reservation as he could. With the help of Mr. P’s inspirational words, he decided to transfer to an all “white” school called Rearden in the search for “hope”. Illustrated on a cartoon on page 43, there was a sign with an arrow pointing left, and an arrow pointing right. The left one wrote “Rez” and “Home”, while the right one wrote, “Hope” with question marks. Arnold was drawn on the right side looking hesitant and scared for his new journey. Other than his family, everyone from the reservation grew hatred for Arnold for betraying them by trying to get something better somewhere else. Even his best friend Rowdy, who always protected Arnold from harm whenever he could, became angry at him. After all, Arnold was the one good thing in Rowdy’s life, and the one person he didn’t want to lose.
When Arnold first came to Rearden, he stood out right away because he was Native American, and most of the other kids were white. Roger, who was one of the big jocks in high school, and his crew picked on Junior the first day and started calling him racist names. As a kid in high school, this was a total nightmare. Arnold contemplated about what he should do using the reservation “rules”, and he ended up punching Roger in the face. This completely shocked Roger, and he ended up gaining respect for Arnold. Junior was embarrassed about being poor, and he thought all of the kids at school would judge him, and hate him for it. Rearden was twenty-two miles from the reservation, so Arnold had to either walk or hitchhike to school when his father didn’t have enough money for gas to drive him there. He had to wait for all of the kids to leave school before he could start his trek so they wouldn’t see him having to walk home. However, his classmates and friends at the white school accepted him for who he was, and they liked him very quickly. He became friends with a smart kid named Gordy. Junior even managed to get a girlfriend named Penelope, who was popular at the Rearden. Surprisingly to him, he also made the varsity team for basketball team, which he never thought would happen. This high school helped Arnold gain some type of confidence in himself, something he had very little of at his old school. He was not ashamed of where he came from anymore.
Challenges of crossing the boundaries of culture were evident. In Arnold’s case, it was hard to get accustomed to a new school filled with people of a culture he was not used to. He didn’t know what to expect, and he always thought the worst was going to happen. Junior had to work on assimilating himself to fit in better the best way that he could. Along with having problems at school, he had even bigger problems at home. With losing his grandma, sister, and dads best friend all dying due to alcohol-related reasons, he almost lost his mind. For Arnold, his way of dealing with things and making sense of his life was drawing cartoons. He basically drew his thoughts. In the novel, Arnold says “I draw because I want to talk to the world. And I want the world to pay attention to me. I feel important with a pen in my hand. I feel like I might grow up to be somebody important (Alexie, p.6).” The illustration on 57 is significant because it shows how different the appearance of Arnold was compared to his white classmates in his eyes. It was a drawing of Arnold with a line going through the center of his whole body. The left side was showing all of the traits and attire of the white part of Arnold, and the right side was showing the Indian side of him. The top of the “white” side of the cartoon had a boxed subheading that said “ A bright future,” and the Indian side boxed subheading said “A vanishing past.” The “bright future” side included a Ralph Lauren shirt, Times wristwatch on his wrist, a backpack with a cell phone, Tommy Hilfiger khakis, and the latest Air Jordan’s. This half of the hair looked much neater than the other side, and it also didn’t wear glasses. There were also other words boxed like “Positive role models”, and “hope.” The “Indian” side of Arnold had a K-mart t-shirt on, blue jeans from Sears, no watch, a garbage bag book bag, and canvas tennis shoes. The phrases that were boxed said “A family history of diabetes and cancer”, and “Bone-crushing reality.” Arnold felt like he didn’t deserve to be at Rearden because he was Indian. Everyone there was the opposite of him, his family, and the rez. Half of every graduating class went to college, and nobody from his family had even gotten close to a college. Arnold knew he was different, and it was up to him to prove that it didn’t make him inferior to his classmates.
In conclusion, everyone has experienced at least one occasion in their life, where they wanted to fit in with others. Whether it is for a sport, school, job, or any activity, when one feels out of place, it is natural to try and assimilate to the norm in order to avoid conflicts. It’s especially hard changing to a school with a completely different ethic and culture from what one is used to, like Arnold. Nobody likes being the odd one out, like how I felt with my name. However, no matter how hard life gets, we know that it always keeps going, and we eventually overcome every curveball that comes our way. It’s also important to know that it is okay to be different; the world would be so dull if everybody was the same.

Reflective Practise

...Reflective report on 3 aspects of training assessment performed with student I asked Leanne (student) to provide three reflective reports on random training she had received in-house from myself. Each one is dated 9th, 17th and 26th January 2012 respectively. The three were quite interesting for Leanne, as one was her first ever fitting of a hearing aid, the second was observational on a unique type of specialist hearing aid, and the third was assessing of a patient for hearing aid suitability. It was agreed that these three sessions encompassed all aspects in Audiology she may come across in her future career. For example, she can fit a hearing aid, she can assess a patient and she has learnt that not all fittings are straight forward, for those presenting with a unique problem(s). The end product is patient satisfaction, provide a solution for the patient and to support that in practise. Leanne has come on in leaps and bounds since her early days in the department. She is confident, but finds it difficult to ask questions. However, she does manage talk about things in the appointment through her reflective reporting. This is something I may need to talk with her about when I have the final meeting with her. But I am not overly concerned at this moment in time. The 3 reflective reports that Leanne produces is of good quality, informative and reasonably accurate. It also highlights aspects of training she mentions that we both have undertaken together in the appointment...

Fitting in

...Stephanie Arevalos Sept. 8 2014 Attempt 1-3 350-375 Yes Fitting in What do you think about the word "fitting in"? What does means to you at school, work, or a generally anywhere. Is it better to standout and be unique or fall in line like everyone else? “Fitting in" has become so much more important than it should be. It has shot up to the top of people's priorities, somewhere it does not necessarily belong. The obsession of “fitting in” seems to lower standards of grades, morals, personal identity and character. Fitting in means giving up a little of who you to be accepted by those around you, compromising your integrity by doing something that you know is wrong but do it anyway. Or we masquerade as someone that we are not. We hide combination of qualities and features that distinguishes us from everyone just so we can fit in. While the majority of us have experienced what it is like to try and "fit in", the group that is forced to cope with this on a daily basis is our younger generation. Many are afraid to admit they have been feeling like outsiders, as if it will destroy their chances forever to be successful at work or in social situations. Throughout our lives, we encounter many situations where we want to be accepted by our peers, and to be accepted by the "In-Crowd." We, at times, have to go outside our character. This can be good, but there are always those that go against what our parents taught us. What got me to write about this subject was the...

Club Fitting

...Club Fitting, The Importance Of Page Break Impossible; it is impossible for a golfer to maximize the potential without two key components. First component is understanding how to properly position and accurately move to body. Simply having an understanding of the fundamentals of golf and the ball flight laws will not give any golfer the best possible opportunities to succeed. Knowledge of what the body does during the golf swing and how to maximize the potential of those body parts will allow the coach and golfer to assess and train for maximum performance. While possessing these fundamentals will increase the ability of the golfer to make their best possible swing, maximum potential can't be reached if the perfect swing is swinging incorrect equipment. Proper and accurately fit equipment is the second and equally important key to maximizing potential and player ability enhancement. (1)"Fitters say the reason a lot of people hit it sideways is because they haven't been custom-fit. Trying to figure out the swing with clubs whose length, weight, lie angle, shaft flex or grip size don't match the body encourages players to make unnatural compensations that prevent them from developing proper mechanics." Meeting with and interviewing the potential student or fitting client will allow the fitter to have the most accurate ability to assess what the client can and can't do. Physical disabilities will effect what the golfer can do and what the fitting professional should...

Fitting In A Dystopian

...Fitting in sometimes feels necessary, almost as if it is the only thing that makes someone feel secure. However that security is not always worth the regret. The authors Ray Bradbury, Kurt Vonnegut Jr, and Kij Johnson understand that concept, and capture it in their writings. Ray wrote a story, “All Summer in a Day,” of a girl who is left out because of the other kids jealousy for her. In “Harrison Bergeron” Kurt writes of a dystopian community where everyone and everything are equal. In the last story “Ponies,” Kij tells of a place where little girls, and their ponies, go to extreme measures to fit in. All of these stories share the same thing, Fitting in can come with a price some are not willing to pay. In the short passage “All Summer in a Day” Kids as young as nine feel the need to fit in, but they do not have the maturity to hold them back. Several times the story...

Bra Fitting

...Topic: Bra Fitting Purpose: Demonstrate how to properly fit for a bra Thesis Statement: Wearing the correct size bra maintains breast health and can improve your appearance. Good Morning Ladies and Gents! As you may know, my name is Janell, and I am pleased to talk with you about a topic that is near and dear to my heart: Bra Fitting! This may not pertain to the gentlemen here today but it is useful information that you could pass along to the women in your life. I have been working as bra fitter for the past six months with the company called Macy’s. Let me ask you a question: “On average, what percentage of women are wearing the wrong size bra?” (Pause) According Wikipedia, 75-85% of women wear the wrong size. For the next few minutes I would like to provide you with a few helpful facts and demonstrate how to measure yourself for the right fit. Believe it or not, most women wear a bra too large in the back and too small in the cups. Most people know that bra sizes are made up of two parts - a number and a letter. The number is known as the "band size" and the letter is the "cup size." However, what many people do not realize is that cup sizes are in proportion to the band size. According to Lisa Hill at our local Macy’s store, you should get re-fitted every time you have a shift in weight. Whether it be weight gain or loss, or even pregnancy; they all have an effect on your bra size. Achieving the proper fit helps with breast health, comfort, and your overall appearance...

Losses in Pipes Fittings

...Energy Losses in Pipes and Fittings Objectives: i. The objectives of this experiment were to firstly, measure the experimental head loss which was due to the friction which occurred in a straight pipe and compare the value with that of which was obtained using a Moody chart. Then to demonstrate that head loss gradient and flow-rate squared are proportional to each other. Summary of Theory: Fluid flows can be described in two ways. These are “laminar” or “turbulent”. Laminar (streamline) flow happens when the fluid particles follow parallel flow paths and usually has low velocity values. On the other hand, turbulent flows are when the particles have irregular, secondary motions in conjunction with the direction of the flow. This causes a mixing of the fluids. A dimensionless constant is used to measure these types of flows, which is called Reynolds Number, and can be found by the equation :Re= vdυ V = Velocity of the flow of fluid D = Diameter of the pipe υ = Kinematic viscosity of water Depending on the size of the number, the resulting Reynolds (Re) number will relate to the type of flow/fluid motion, a Re number of 2000 will result in a laminar flow. Whereas, a Re number of more than 4000 will result in a turbulent flow. Frictional losses must also be taken into account with regards to the relative roughness of the pipe used: k = Pipe roughness d = Diameter of pipe k/d = 0.0015mm / 10.31mm = 0.000145 Equipment Used: Cussons Hydraulic Bench Stopwatch ...

Garch Model Fitting for Ibm

...GARCH Model Fitting For IBM Introduction: Nowadays, many econometric studies have documented that financial return time series tend to be highly heteroskedastic, with varying variability or volatility and thick-tailed marginal distribution. Volatility is the conditional variance, which is unobservable and tends to be clustered together. Clustering is referred to as the phenomenon that large price changes of either signs tend to be followed by large changes, and similarly small changes follow small changes. Sudden bursts of volatility in financial returns exhibit strong dependence on the return time series, and a period of tranquility alternates with a period of volatility bursts. A popular ARCH, which is called Autoregressive Conditional Heteroscedasticity, modeling was introduced to capture the predictability of volatility ad the volatility clustering as well as the thick-tailed marginal distribution of the return time series. The tremendous success of GARCH modeling in empirical work makes may econometricians to treat it as the benchmark model for financial time series. Data Description: In this GARCH model fitting report, I use the history of stock price of IBM from January 2nd, 2013, to December 31th, 2013, collecting the data of “High”, “Low”, “Close”, and so on. At the beginning, I run the ACF for the log return and squared log return of IBM to get the autocorrelation for them. Then, by assuming that the model is normal distribution, we use the R to fit a GARCH model...

Plumbing

...Kevin McPheeters Instructor’ Choice Assignment Fall2012-ECO2023-Princ Economics II-372686 November 3, 2012 Plumbing In my current position, I have the chance to dabble in many of your typical industrial trades such as electrical work, carpentry, welding and plumbing. As much as I enjoy this type of work, my job requirements create limitations to my knowledge and experience. I work in a maintenance capacity; therefore it is helpful to know a little bit about a lot, as opposed to being experienced in exclusively one trade. All of the aforementioned trades are suffering a shortage of qualified employees, so the opportunity exists to get into any of them and succeed, career wise as well as monetarily. It just amounts to how hard one is willing to work on what are generally considered unglamorous trades. For the purpose of this assignment I am going to focus on opportunities in the plumbing trade. Plumbers are tradesmen that are generally qualified for a wide range of responsibilities, and also need some experience in other trades such as carpentry and welding. Plumbers can handle jobs as simple as one man unplugging a toilet all the way to an entire company dedicating its workforce to constructing a skyscraper. They can handle everything from plastic pipe and glue to cast iron pipes and a welding rig. If they are working on a house, they would need some carpentry skills for plumbing installation. Plumbers have an advantage over some of the other construction related trades...
