Introduction: success is defined as a favorable or desired outcome (“success”, 2013). Many people wonder how they can become successful or what does it take to make it in this world, in this competitive economy. In this paper, I will discuss the habits, knowledge, and mindset necessary for success in life, college, and career.
Reflect on life
Motivation, consistency, and patience are necessary for success in life.
According to the article, “Self-motivation is taking responsibility for doing whatever is necessary to get the job done”( Macpherson,2006 p.26). Motivation and consistency are my strengths because of my five month old daughter. When she was born it motivated me to be all I could be, and to be a role model for her. She helps me stay consistent even when I’m having a bad day because I know she is looking up to me to provide for her. I can look at her and smile and know that everything I’m doing in my life is not in vain, and will motivate me to ensure she has the life I never did growing up. Patience is my biggest challenge because I can’t wait for things to be done later, they have to be done at that moment even if I have a thousand things to do. For example, I have math class on Tuesday and homework is assigned, by me not being patient and pacing myself I try to complete all the homework that night and not go to bed until it’s finished instead of doing some problems here and there because I know it won’t be due until that following Tuesday. I can work on being patient by stopping and taking a deep breath and acknowledge the fact that everything can’t be done all at once but it will get done.
Reflect on college
Punctuality, being organized, and becoming a lifelong learner is necessary for success in college.
Punctuality would be my strength because I always get to class early, and I hate the thought of being late or missing anything. I always arrive an hour early, so if I need to ask questions or finish work, I can. Additionally, being organized is strength for me because I like knowing where everything is and I have a system.By me having five classes a week this semester I have to keep it together or I will be flustered and lost. For every class, I have a binder with dividers and a notebook, and at the end of the week I write a checklist of all the assignments and when they have to be due so I won’t be behind.
My challenge is lifelong learning , according to the article,” People who will manage their own personal and professional development , learn aggressively, and take the initiative to get the expertise required to add more value to the company”( Macpherson,2006 p.26). This is a challenge to me because I simply don’t care or enjoy the thought of lifelong learning. I have always been the person that didn’t like school. I can improve this by seeing the greater reward in lifelong learning. In Macpherson (2006) states that,” Hiring managers very often look to the education section of a resume to see if candidates have continued learning and growing as part of their career”. By knowing this it will help me to be motivated to embrace lifelong learning so I can be qualified for my career.
Reflect on career
Interpersonal skills, thinking strategically, and being open to change is necessary to be successful in your future.
Interpersonal skills are a strength because I work well with others and I like to get to know different people. In the article it states that “Getting along with others, whether customers or colleagues, is at the heart of fitting in with the culture of a company”- (Macpherson, 2006 p26). By this being a strength for me, I feel as if I can be an asset to a company and help bring it life. Being open to change is also a strength for me because I like new ideas and learning different ways of doing things. “Business is about change – those who embrace it will thrive, and those who resist it will not.” ( Macpherson 2006 p.27). I believe in that statement so much because being open to change can help a company and have a huge impact. My challenge out of these three would be thinking strategically because I often act on impulse and don’t think about the effects later down the line or how it will affect others. I can improve this challenge by stopping to think before I act and come up with all the possible outcomes and come up with one that.
