Flag football is said to have originated by President Theodore Roosevelt during World War ll. It was used by the U.S. Military to prevent casualties caused by regular football. It eventually became a sport in the 1930’s and is now played commonly around the United States. There are many offensive positions in the game. The center (person who passes the ball to the quarterback to begin the play), fullback (a.k.a. the running back who lines up behind the quarterback), quarterback (player who controls the game on the field), the tackle (a.k.a. a lineman who stands next to the guard), guard (who protects the quarterback), and the end (which can be lineman or receivers). The game also consists of defensive positions. The Lineman (front players on defense), linebackers (stand back from the main line of scrimmage), and defensive backs (a.k.a. cornerbacks or safety). …show more content…
The width of the field is typically 30 yards, or 20 yards. Each end zone is a maximum of 10 yards deep with a minimum of 7 yards deep. Each “no running zone” is marked 5 yards from each goal line on the playing field. Each game of flag football is typically 40 minutes long, with two 20-minute halves. The clock is consistently running, and stops during a timeout. Each team is allowed two timeouts during each half. But, during the game, a touchdown is worth a total of 6 points, and then a team is given 30 seconds between downs to put the ball in

Fandom

...Manchester United’ Supporters "Fandom" as a topic, is arguably one of the most indistinctive concepts of "fan culture". However, we will analyze online fan activity dedicated solely to the Manchester United football club and relate it to the different dimensions suggested by De Kloet & Van Zoonen. We selected this particular topic because we believe all the different dimensions of fan-culture can be applied to this specific fandom group. Studying the nature of Manchester United's fan culture should be crucial to a club. This is obviously due to the fact that fans define and greatly determine the perceptions of the football club. If this truly were the case, it is important to investigate how fans think and act. Some acts and accusations made by fans may give football a negative connotation if they [fans] are being labeled as hooligans. However, in the following paper we take a positive attitude on football fans and try to illustrate what makes them valuable for research. The outlet of fandom explored is an image found on Facebook where Manchester United fans flaunt a flag in favor of the so called "Red Army". The comments on the picture give enough content to analyze the football club's fandom in every dimension suggested by De Kloet & van Zoonen. To grasp a stronger sense of fandom within Manchester United, we will also include a typical supporters’ anthem, which is sung almost religiously every match the club encounters. Additionally, we will define and...

Concussions in Sports

...the United States I can guarantee that you have some kind of affiliation with some kind of sport. As of the year 2013 studies show that “sixty percent of our children between the ages of five years of age and eighteen years of age play some kind of sport outside of school activities”, and if you think about how much sixty percent of our child population in the United States is, that is a lot of kids. Now think about how many of those parents think about there children having the potential for a brain traumatic injury, I would guess that statistic is probably quite a bit lower than ten percent, no study to my knowledge has been done for this. So I am writing this paper to make parents aware of what is currently surrounding issues around brain traumatic injuries and I’ll let you be the judge of the outcome and research I have found. When we think about sports or sporting events, we tend to think about our favorite players, teams, teams we don’t like, competition and hard-hitting action. Concussions In Sports 3 Do we ever step back and look at the bigger picture outside of what...

There have been several suicide related deaths that have left many unanswered questions. Some have even left suicide notes that requested that their brain to be researched. Additionally, medical research has been able to show connection through several studies that head injuries, especially repeated, can cause traumatic brain damage. The main point of this research paper is to argue that repeated head injuries suffered by current and former NFL players are directly related to the neurological problems and the deaths of Junior Seau, Jovan Belcher and others, while also presenting the reactive measures that are taking place to prevent future occurrences in regards to rules and equipment.   Every NFL football team is assigned a medical staff that is a paid member(s) of the organization. Their sole purpose is to tend to players after they have an on the field injury during a practice or game. The history behind the NFL’s medical staff dates back to 1966. Nfl Concussion Litigation

...On January 31, 2012, the Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation issued an order consolidating several lawsuits against the National Football League into one large case of Multidistrict Litigation. All of the lawsuits that have been filed claim “tortious conduct” on the part of the NFL, resulting in neuro-degenerative disease and injury to professional football players. As of January 24, 2013, over 4,500 retired NFL players, more than one-third of players to ever sign an NFL contract, had brought a suit against the NFL concerning the head injuries that they sustained on the field during their playing careers. (Anderson, 1). Given the outstanding popularity of football in the United States, these lawsuits have garnered the attention of national media, prompting debate, discussion, and research about the dangers of football-related head injuries and the future of the NFL. (Fenno, 1). The litigation has the potential to reach the scale of the Big Tobacco litigation of the 1990’s, but the NFL has thrown a substantial roadblock in the players’ suit with a federal employment law preemption defense. (Fisher, 1). The consolidation of all the lawsuits into the Multidistrict Litigation has created the ability for both parties to decide the legal issues presented by the players’ claims and the NFL’s defenses. This paper will examine the merits of those claims and defenses, offer insight into how the players applied rhetorical devices to further their case, address the link established...

Pay to Play

...Pay to Play: Economic Impact of Paying College Athletes 1. Purpose of Research & Analysis On April 25, 2014, the National Labor Relations Board in Washington, D.C., granted Northwestern University's request to review the decision made by the regional office recognizing the school's football players as employees. In mid-April, Northwestern football players voted as a team on whether or not to unionize, but the votes will only be opened if the board ends up siding with the players, which may take at least a couple of months. Ultimately, the Northwestern football players are determining their fate through this secret ballot and their decision to form the first union amongst college athletes—a decision that has the ability to change the landscape of American college sports. If granted the right to unionize, the Northwestern football team will actually have the ability to bargain over their conditions and it is expected that this could ultimately lead to requesting salary compensation for their efforts. In light of these recent historic discussions, it is critical to analyze not only the ethical, but also the economic impact of such potential situations. My research paper has been structured to shed some light into the challenging and complicated discussions that continue to occur around this topic. Specifically, I have broken my research and analysis into three key topics. First, I explore whether or not there is an underlying issue with the current state, from an economic perspective...

Colin Kaepernick's Argument Analysis

...Last NFL season Colin Kaepernick decided to protest racial injustice in the U.S by taking a knee during the national anthem before his games. This local movement quickly sparked discussions across conservative media who “ignored Kaepernick’s stated intentions and instead accused him of being unpatriotic and disrespectful of the American flag” (Illing 2018) However, this was not what brought Kaepernick to news headlines. The controversy exploded when President Donald Trump responded to the situation by saying, “Wouldn’t you love to see one of these NFL owners ... say, ‘Get that son of a bitch off the field right now. He’s fired!’ (Graham 2017). Overall the NFL protests demonstrate how the snowballing turmoil of a country can make its way into...

Cross Curricular Learning

...Introduction Cross Curricular teaching involves a conscious effort to encourage students to apply skills or knowledge acquired through learning at school to more than one subject on their curriculum. A central topic or theme can interlink subjects with each other, and students as a result should be able to learn an aspect of a central topic and apply information learned in one subject to others(Householder & Boulin 1992). As mentioned in Component 1 there are huge advantages to Cross Curricular teaching and learning. However, many students do not or cannot apply the knowledge that they have acquired in one subject to others (www.fromtinyacorns.wordpress.com/2009/10/28/about-transdisciplinary-thematic-learning) Learning beyond subject boundaries provides a student with the opportunity to experience not only learning that is relevant to one subject’s requirements, but also learning information that they will apply to other subjects. This type of learning some students may find to be challenging as they will be studying one topic from many different perspectives. However, with a deeper understanding of a topic, others will find it more interesting and may be encouraged to study the topic even further. Rensick (1989) confirms this stating that in contrast to learning topics in isolation students become more actively engaged in their studies when they participate in cross curricular learning. Cross curricular learning that is based on linking learning experiences and...
