Florida Air, Inc.

1. Evaluate Florida Air’s search for capital. What, if any, key mistakes were made? -Dan failed to fully utilize high profile networks of Scott and Henry, who were both graduates of an Ivy League School (Did Scott graduate from Ivy League School?). Also, Dan did not try to reach out to his network he established while he was buying and selling airplanes. Even if there was no one interested in their direct network, perhaps someone in their network knew someone who might be interested. Scott later contacted his 100 alumni later but rather passively; instead of calling to actively initiate a conversation, he mailed out information. -Also, the team initially decided that the best group to approach for capital would be the ones with airline experience to appreciate the benefits of their idea. However, we think the investors do not necessarily needed to have that airline experience, as long as they saw potential and some benefits of the venture. By selecting that "best pool" we believe the team limited themselves to a small group of potential investors. -The team did not do enough research and did not come up with a well-structured business plan. When potential investor candidate Jason Daulton had asked seemingly basic questions about how Flordia air will handle maintenance costs, scheduling, fuel efficiency economics, underlying rationale of assumptions made in the business plan, the team did not know what to answer. -We think the team's estimate of necessary capital of 1.5 million might have been too small for such a capital-intensive business (considering they would have to lease/buy airplanes). Therefore, the team could not get attention from institutional sources of funding.

...movement of air in which thermal energy is distributed on the surface of the earth. The atmospheric circulation changes from year to year because of several factors. Some of the factors are mid-latitude depressions, tropical cells, and other random pressure systems. Global Atmospheric Circulation is a result of the Earth being heated from energy produced from the Sun, however, this heat is unevenly distributed across the Earth's surface. Equatorial and tropical regions receive much more solar energy than the mid latitudes and the Polar Regions. The tropics receive more heat radiation than they end up emitting. In contrast, the Polar Regions emit more heat radiation than they receive. If there were no heat transferred from the tropics to the Polar Regions the tropics would get continue to get hotter and the Polar Regions would continue to get colder. This latitudinal heat imbalance is what causes the circulation of the atmosphere and the oceans. About 60% of heat energy ends up being re-distributed around the planet by the atmospheric circulation and about 40% is re-distributed by the ocean currents. 1 One way that heat is transferred from the equator to the poles is by a single circulation cell in which air moves from the tropics to the poles and then back. This single-cell circulation model was originally proposed in the 1700's by Hadley. With the Hadley Cell low latitude air moves towards the Equator and then heats up. While the temperature rises the air rises vertically...

The Consequences of Eliminating Rock

...The Consequences of Eliminating Rock Mining in South Florida Carlos Socarras Professor – Karen Nead English-135 December 1, 2008 The reason I chose this topic for my research paper is because I feel that it is critical to help educate you a little on the importance of rock mining in South Florida and the consequences that we will endure without this local resource. Throughout this paper you will see me make reference to Titan Americas Pennsuco facility. This is mostly because I am currently employed by them and have been working in the Pennsuco cement plant for over nineteen years now, so I have managed to learn a lot of its history through time and experience. Another reason is the fact that as a fellow employee the ruling to eliminate rock mining in Florida directly affects me mainly because this decision would put me out of a job. I would first like to begin by giving you a brief history of the Pennsuco land and how Titan America acquired the facility, so that you can have a better understanding of the issues that we are currently experiencing. In the early 1900s, Pennsylvania Sugar Co., which is where the term “Pennsuco” came from was one of several companies that obtained large acreages and planted sugar cane on the drained “muck land” of the Florida Everglades. Operations were good until the Great Depression of the 1930s hit the sugar market. Today the Pennsuco cement plant is located on the former Pennsuco sugar Farms property. (Cement Americas, 2005) ...

According to research, “the Everglades contain a vast array of plants and animals that have adapted to the wet subtropical environment.” A few examples include birds such as the whooping crane, great blue, white, and tricolored herons, wood stork, and the cape-sable seaside sparrow. Land mammals such as the raccoon, skunk, opossum, bobcat and the white-tail deer are also a part of this environment; other animals include the American gator, the west-Indian Manatee, and the bottle nose dolphin. The Sunshine State

...The Sunshine State By: AlanV Florida, the peninsula of the United States, is one of the most relaxing and warming places you can go in the U.S. to take a break from your everyday life. It has fresh air from the calming palm trees that inhabit its streets. Its days usually consist of sunlight, followed by nice, warm, breezy evenings. And to top that all off if relatives live there it’s a great place to come together. When people think of Florida, they think of Miami, and question how they’re supposed to relax in another city. Well, Miami isn’t the only place you go to in Florida. Places like Orlando or Tampa are just as great and have their own unique features to them. It is not without it’s issues, however. Although it seems amazing due to its easy access to the beaches, that is also why it can be quite annoying. For example, if you were in Nevada you would feel a heat that you would describe as dry. This is because it is not close to any source of water and happens to be a desert. You feel very hot but never break into a sweat, even if you want to. Florida, however, has the opposite problem. When you start to exercise or even walk for a little you start to sweat immediately. This is because the heat is very humid being so close to all the bodies of water. Even so, with so many options to choose from such as an Orlando, Miami, or Tampa, there is so much to do that you won’t care that you sweat a little. You’ll just always remember to bring a bottle...

...Corn Integrated Pest Management      Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is a holistic approach to monitoring pest lifecycles and prevalence in farmer’s fields to determine the best pest control methods to protect crop yield potential in the current and following growing seasons. IPM is a continuum of pest management evaluations, decisions, and controls that encompass pest lifecycles and prevalence, agronomic practices such as crop rotation, seed selection, soil management, and timely use of pesticides to minimize pest damage and protect environmental resources. Red Root Rot a Late Season Disease of Corn * Roots and basal stalk tissue infected with red root rot characteristically have reddish-pink, rotted roots. * Stalks are weakened and susceptible to lodging. * Premature plant death is common and can occur quickly and yield losses can be as high as 15-20%. * Genetic resistance to red root rot is uncommon and breeding for disease resistance is difficult. Management Management options are limited.  Crop rotation with a non-host such as soybean can provide some control.1 Genetic resistance has been difficult to incorporate into corn products, although the rate of disease development varies greatly between corn products. Research on inheritance of disease resistance indicates that it is a polygenic trait with additive gene action, which has complicated breeding efforts.1 Environmental stress during the season may contribute to disease infection and severity...
