Refuge Essay

Personal development is often a result of changes in emotional and social responses of individuals. Changes in relationships and personal growth affects the way individuals respond to the world. In Libby Gleeson adolescent novel ‘Refuge’, her characterisation of the protagonist Andrew explores how change results in personal development.
Throughout the novel Andrew goes through many tough changes that challenge him socially, emotionally and physically within his relationship with his family and friends. In refuge, Libby Gleeson has utilised the nature of changing self. Andrews self-change
At the beginning of the novel Andrew arrives home from a fossil dig, ‘god you’ve grown’ is a change that is mother has noticed, it states that there is a physical change which has occurred in a physical way while he has been on his dig.
Andrew is then put through two different types of changes. The first one is noticed when he starts school after the holidays and starts year 9, this change is an emotional change, because he is starting a new year at school. The second change is noticed with his relationship with Kim; this change is both social and emotional due to the fact that he has a very strong feeling for Kim and she is trying to ignore him.
Andrew then goes through an emotional change when he has Thomas, Rebecca and Kim over his house, but his emotions then change when Kim says that she has to go for a reason that she cannot tell Andrew.
Anna versus mum, Anna versus Dad. Was there a time bf? Before fights? Happy families like in TV land or ad land?’’ In this chapter there is a big emotional change due to conflict between his Sister (Anna), mum and dad. He tries to picture the time when Anna was little and there was no fighting. Another change in this chapter is when Anna is dropped off by a boy named Marcus, after dropping his sister home after a party because she got drunk, in this part of the novel it shows Andrew going through a social change after he meets Marcus.
During this chapter Andrew decides to approach Kim to ‘’Ask her. Ask her to go to a movie or to hang out somewhere, to do something that isn’t in the group.’’ This quote by Andrew shows an emotion change that he finally built up the courage to ask out Kim. Another change which is important in this chapter is when Anna tries to convince Andrew to help her in giving refuge to a refugee from east Timor, this shows an emotional change because he must decide if he’s going to help or not. During the beginning of this chapter there is a conflict between Anna and dad about having the refugee in their home. The quote used in this chapter was ‘’your mother right, it’s a crazy scheme...You have no idea what’s involved...Breaking the law sounds like a game to you’’. This quote was used by Andrews’s dad to try and convince her that give refuge to a refugee was a bad idea.
In this chapter Andrew expresses his feelings about not wanting to help Anna with this sneaky scheme. Then without noticing Andrew came up with a brilliant observation from Anna’s point of view when he says ‘’ Apart from anything else, it’s not as if you’d even notice someone here, it’s such a big house.’ Big enough to do it without them knowing’’ Anna liked this idea and decided to hide the refugee in the spare room because no one goes in there.
In the next chapter Andrew wakes up to his parents fighting about Anna wanting to give refuge to a refugee. Dad then tried to convince mum that it was a good idea but mum still didn’t give in. This shows that Dad is starting to see the good side in having a refugee in the house. Andrew then looks at his mirror to find a note stuck there saying’’ Maybe today- Anna’’. This is a sign that Anna might be bringing the refugee to their home that day.
In the next chapter Andrew was met with a huge change when he sat at the kitchen table and noticed that here was a shadowed figure curled up on the mattress for Andrew this is an emotional change due to the fact that he hasn’t met Rosa yet. When he found Anna she told him that she had to go out for a little while and that Andrew would watch her for a little while, this was a big emotional change due to the fact that he still wasn’t sure if he wanted to help Anna, and he still hadn’t met her yet.
In the chapter ahead Rosa bumps into dad and they have to try and make up a lie to try and cover up. They said that Rosa was one of Anna’s friends, and dad believed it and went away. In this chapter a social change occurred due to dad finding Rosa.
In the next chapter Tyr is asked why he moved to Australia, he told them the story about how his country was invaded by the military and how they killed his family. This is a huge change to Andrew and Anna because they had no idea how bad it actually was. The quote Tyr used was ‘’you wouldn’t have understood before, you don’t really understand now, you think you do but you can’t.
Then Andrews parents discover that Rosa is a refugee and decide that they will let her stay with them until the court case, this is an emotional change for Andrew and Anna because they now don’t have to worry about trying to hide Rosa.

Hrm in Israel

...The transition from a Socialist approach to a free market approach and the rise of a new high-tech sector are two remarkable shifts that have occurred in the last two decades in Israel. In the face of these changes, human resource (HR) practitioners are currently expected to assume new roles, adopt different work values, and apply appropriate strategies. HR managers in the low-tech industry still adhere to traditional values and strategies, including a reliance on trade unions and an emphasis on job security and the employees’ years of work experience and seniority as key criteria for promotion. In the emerging high-tech sector, HR managers have adopted new values and developed new strategies, including human resource management programs, employee empowerment, higher salaries and better benefits, while placing an emphasis on employees’ talents and qualifications. The Art of High-Technology Management

...The paper is mainly about the management of the high-tech companies in a successful way. The article is written as the result of a research that exceeds two decades which consists of surveys and interviews with several CEOs and executives from different high-tech industries and different-sized firms. In the article the authors define six key headings for a successful management of high-tech companies. After explaining all, they also put these topics in two groups which are paradoxical. The themes mentioned in the article which are “business focus”, “organizational cohesion” and “sense of integrity” represent the static and stable side of the paradox. On the other hand “adaptability”, “entrepreneurial culture” and “hands-on top management” are dynamic and changing side of the paradox. Six themes of the successful high-tech management that are mentioned in the article: Business Focus: To succeed as a technology firm, companies should focus their attention on production lines, R&D stage and business priorities. Instead of making effort for irrelevant and wide product portfolio, they should concentrate on well-known and well-done products, areas or trying to create new product lines or business opportunities which are related to these. For the technological leadership of the companies, R&D expenses also should be enduring in a few areas instead of being in many areas and discontinuous. Adaptability: A high technology company should be able to adapt and lead the rapid changes...

Smartix Evaluation

...Smartix Case HBS Smartix 1. Imagine that you are Vivek Khuller. Should you accept the offer from MSG? I don’t believe that I would take the offer from MSG. Here’s the problem with not taking the deal: Accel is relying on the MSG deal far greater than anticipated, and the deal with Accel has a high probability of falling through once it is discovered MSG may not be participating in the way Accel is anticipating. The other issue at hand is that without the Accel deal, Smartix is nearly out of time and the funds required to continue aggressively pursuing the project. An alternative for Smartix in this situation is to scale it back and seek out a slightly smaller deal. They have the capacity to do so and it seems that they were aiming rather ambitiously with MSG. If they wanted to reassess their end game and dial it down some, they have the opportunity to connect with a slightly smaller venue or company and they have a short amount of time to do so. Another alternative to accepting the MSG deal is for the founders to gain outside employment in an effort to sustain themselves while they regroup Smartix to succeed under their terms. They all know that the last thing they want to do after all their hard work is become MSG employees. In the end, don’t accept a subpar deal if you know your venture is worth more. 2. Should Vivek have tried to start this venture without co-founders? Could he have been a solo founder? While not doubting his competence or his ability to...

Using tools outside of the normal resume check alongside the educational background, these Companies are able to now “catch them young” by scouting for qualified candidates with needed skills, and recruiting them from colleges instead of waiting till they have completely finished their degree. By exploiting these advantages, they were able to grow at a rapid pace. By 2009, Globant had over 1500 employees and was generating three million dollars per month in revenue. Despite their success, Globant found themselves at a crossroads. For four years the founders pursued clients that needed IT expertise in anything under the broad spectrum of IT services. However, the management team recognized that Globant needed to target specific industries to remain competitive in the market. The team therefore, narrowed their scope to four very distinct market segments for further analysis: high-tech, telecom, travel and financial services industries. Globant recognized that their diversified client portfolio was spreading resources too thin, and top clients began choosing IT service partners that focused on a specific industry where they could demonstrate a deep and wide understanding of a particular sector of the market.
