The term “food miles” simply means the measure of the distance the food travels from production to consumption. CHOICE advocates are calling for localised eating to counter with the huge number of imported food products in the supermarkets.The further a product travels the more fuel is consumed and used for that product to be on the supermarkets shelves and the more fuel is used the more greenhouse gas emissions it makes. By looking at buying food that is grown locally can help to reduce the amount of food miles made by imported food. Arguments have been made on how to reduce food miles. If you were to shop at a local farmers’ market for example, it would support the local food businesses and you would be connecting with the community and there may be beneficial differences. Though locally grown food isn’t always the best food, as some frozen vegetables have higher amounts of vitamins than fresh food does.A recent US study found that food transportation only made up 11 per cent of the food miles total greenhouse gas emissions, sometimes it takes more oil to produce food locally. Local farms and factories where food is grown and produced have more environmental effects besides greenhouse emissions. They also have negative effects on wildlife, soil degradation and the production of pesticides actually consumes a huge amount of energy to make. | We have many ways of producing different types of food, but which one is better for yourself and the environment. When you look at imported food such as lemons which are imported from America they have a high percentage of ‘food miles’ on them as they have traveled a long way to be readily available in our supermarkets. Though I am not sure why they need to be imported from America because they are so many lemon trees in Western Australia.Growing and producing food takes a lot of time and effort to do it right and it takes time to prepare the food so it’s suitable for distributing and most people prefer to buy food that is in the supermarket over locally grown food for a number of reasons. It could be that you pay the same money at the local farmers’ market but get lesser quality food than you would if you went to a supermarket where there is more variety of different types of food and you may even like to try something you wouldn’t find at a local farmers market. The difference between the food at the supermarket and the local farmers’ market food is not just the quality of the food it’s also the quantity and how much money you’re willing to spend on food that isn’t kept fresh compared to food that is. At the supermarkets the food is kept fresh and is restocked daily and you are getting better quality food at a cheaper price most of the time because the supermarkets always have special offers on and if you’re a bit of an eco warrior you would be better off going to a supermarket over a local farmers' market because it uses more energy and resources to produce food that is grown locally. |
