Question 1: Forced Ranking Appraisals
Forced ranking is a product of the tedious bureaucratic requirements. They are the annual evaluation mostly done at the end of the year. The ranking produces a list from the best performing to the least performing. Moreover, the least performing are often fired. The trend proceeds to the next year and the least performing ones are also fired. The system fails to consider the levels of input and the resultant output. As a result, some hardworking employees obtain low rankings due to logistical challenges and they might be fired in the end. The ranking system is a blanket for all organizations irrespective of their varying peak seasons (Spector, 2008).

Instead, the system threatens them putting their income and livelihood at risk. Motivation is an involuntary practice that individuals need to attain by themselves. Imposing rankings to make workers compete for positions derails their morale (Spector, 2008). The workers will have a low-esteem because if they are not fired in the current year, they are most likely to find the cut in the next or the other year. Therefore, for them it is only a matter of time before they are fired. As a result, the employees will be unwilling to partake in a competition that they will …show more content…
When the performance is ranked at the end of the year, it does not consider pending and projects in process. It mainly focuses on completed projects (Spector, 2008). On the other hand, the theory advocated for evaluation after the completion of assigned activities. Additionally, there is no system capable of ranking all workers in an organization with in a single manner. Different job posts have varying requirement, thus varying results and methods of assessment. The forced ranking system exposes all employees to the same evaluation, benefiting other while producing poor assessment for others (Walster,et.al., 1978).
