1) Facing problems with high cost and extremely long lead times for prototype parts, Ford invested in the creation of “Ford Freeform Fabrication Technology” or F3T, for short. F3T is a first of its kind patented technology that utilizes robots and CAD to form sheet metal parts for prototype and low-volume production applications. Ford’s mission was to develop a technology that would significantly reduce lead times for metal stamping parts, which had previously taken up to 6 months to procure.

2) Prior to moving forward with the plan to develop F3T, Ford investigated their internal lead times for prototype or low volume production parts. While investigating, it quickly became clear that the traditional method for stamping metal was still best practice for mass production, but not ideal for customized production due to lead times and high tooling cost.

3) Developing a stamping technology that no longer requires forming dies, saves Ford a massive amount of money in reduced tooling cost, and shorting lead times. In addition, this technology advancement puts prototype parts into the hands of the design release engineers as soon as 3 days following the CAD release. Conventional stamping requires up to 6 months before the first part is created. The reduced cost and shorter lead times directly translate into improved profitability. This said, the biggest gain will be improved customer satisfaction as critical paths to get new models or design changes to market, are substantially reduced.
