Four Lions

The movie ”Four Lions” is a British dark comedy from 2010. It is about a group of radicalized young men, who are under the impression that if you die fulfilling a religious commandment, you will enter paradise and be rewarded with 72 vir-gins.

The group consists of Omar, the leader, who is disillusioned about the treatment of Muslims around the world and is determined to become a martyr. The easily manipulated and confused Waj, who is intrigued by the idea, jumps on the wag-on. Faisal, the odd man out, but a respected member of the group. Then there is Barry, who also goes by the name Azzam al-Britanni, a white Islamic convert and self-appointed leader (in his own world). While Omar and Waj are participating in a terrorist training camp in Pakistan, Barry recruits a fifth member to their group, Hassan: A young and fun teenager, who seeks to become a part of some-thing greater. The trip to Pakistan ends in disaster and Omar and Waj return to England. As the pieces start falling in to place, and their competing ideologies clash, a human side of them appears and they begin to doubt and regret their in-tentions and actions. But perhaps it is too late?

The relationship between the characters changes from person to person as they are all ranked differently in the group. At the top of the hierarchy is Omar, and Waj is his follower. The relationship between Waj and Omar is special because they depend on each other, and their strong bond is evident. Omar chooeses Waj as his sidekick and they travel to Pakistan together. In the end Omar does every-thing in his power to prevent Waj from committing suicide, because he has real-izes how wrong it is, and when he fails to do so, he does not hesitate to meet the same fate to join his fellow lion.

Even though Omar is the leader of the group, the decisions taken by the group are who Waj decides to side with, because without followers a leader is just a guy taking a walk. Further down the hierarchy is Barry. Barry is a Caucasian Brit who converted to Islam. He desperately wants to be the leader of the group, and disregards and disrespects Omar in every way possible. To become the leader of the group, he abuses and manipulates the rest of the group in to becoming his followers. At the bottom of the hierarchy are Faisal and Hassan who are both fol-lowers (of Barry primarily due to his manipulation). The difference between their ranks in the hierarchy is that Faisal is a respected member of the group, while Hassan is not.
While the terrorist attack in the end of the movie is scripted and is handled with humor to a degree where it seems unrealistic, terrorism does occur in real life. A recent terror attack occurs in Paris on the morning of January 7th 2015, when two masked gunmen armed with assault rifles and other weapons force their way in to the offices of Charlie Hebdo. Charlie Hebdo is a French satirical weekly magazine featuring cartoons, reports, and jokes and compared to “Four Lions”, the magazine also handles serious subjects with humor and satire. It has attract-ed attention for its controversial depictions of the prophet Muhammad. In the end this proves to be fatal for them. The gunmen kill 11 people and injure anoth-er 11 people. The gunmen are later identified as Cherif and Said Kouachi. Similar to the Kouachi brothers, the lions are also philosophically and politically moti-vated to commit the crimes. In the movie, it is evident that the lions are not pleased with the treatment of Muslims around the world, especially when Barry participates in a debate regarding how Muslims are viewed in today’s society. The backgrounds of the attackers are similar to each other, as they are all Mus-lims and believe that performing these acts will lead to them gaining martyr sta-tus.

Why is “Four Lions” handling a serious subject like terrorism with humor and satire? To give a short characterization of the lions in the movie, they are just a bunch of religiously confused losers, who are looking for something to blow up. There is a scene in which the group catches Hassan with Alice in the room filled with chemicals and materials for their bombs: Oblivious to her surround-ings, they convince Alice that they are gay and that they have “got to get down to some gay business” as a cover up for their real plans.
There is also a scene in which Omar’s brother refuses to be in the same room as Omar’s wife and it ends with a water pistol fight.
The use of humor brings out the best in all the characters and keeps the audience entertained, but is it too provocative? “Four Lions” is less about religion and more about the people we know from real life, who are blinded by their stupidity and are obsessed with reaching their goals. [But what are their goals again?] The director of the movie uses the way of humor to handle a sensitive subject with-out it becoming too controversial. By using humor, “Four Lions” emphasizes the necessity of having fun and still having humor even when the world has lost it.

Focusing on the multicultural aspect of the movie, the five men are not accepting towards diversity. In the scene in which Barry participates in a debate, Hassan makes a scene and bursts out “You think we’re all bombers, don’t you?” He then proceeds to unzip his jacket and reveals something that looks like bombs. He pulls the strings and the people in the room scream and panic just to find that is was actually just confetti popping out. He then says: “What, just because I’m Mus-lim, you thought it was real?” This scene clearly shows how disillusioned they are when it comes to their perception of how Muslims are treated in the western civilization and how rejecting they are. The other “debaters” actively try to con-vince Barry otherwise, but he either brushes them off or complains even more. This is what can happen, when people do not try to integrate in to society, even if they were born and raised there, like Barry. Even though some of the lions seem somewhat normal, it is obvious that they are not trying to fit in to society but ra-ther hiding and blending in to British society to seem normal even if they are not. That is why people like Omar’s co-worker does not suspect anything or believes that he is a terrorist after the attacks.

The movie “Four Lions” presents five terrorists as what they are: regular human beings. The whole point of the movie was to humanize the terrorists and experi-ence what kind of emotions and experiences they go through. Some of them ac-tually believe, that they are doing the right thing by killing other people this way, and how exactly are we supposed to deal with that? This movie shows us suicide bombers from a whole new perspective and makes us realize, that they are also human beings. It also brings attention to the consequences to the whole society when a group of people insists on not integrating. They immediately fall in to the “victim mentality” that Tariq Ramadan describes in his text “You can’t go home again” . He describes some Muslims as extremists who tend to argue that “You are more Muslim, when you’re against the West” and it seems that the five lions share the same mentality. But is that an open invitation to bomb the people of the West? Perhaps it is in their minds, opposed to what we believe in. Who is right? We do not know because in the end we are only humans.

The Lion

...Contents The lion (Panthera leo) is one of the four big cats in the genus Panthera and a member of the family Felidae. With some males exceeding 250 kg (550 lb) in weight, it is the second-largest living cat after the tiger. Wild lions currently exist in sub-Saharan Africa and in Asia (where anendangered remnant population resides in Gir Forest National Park in India) while other types of lions have disappeared from North Africa andSouthwest Asia in historic times. Until the late Pleistocene, about 10,000 years ago, the lion was the most widespread large land mammal after humans. They were found in most of Africa, across Eurasia from western Europe to India, and in the Americas from the Yukon to Peru.[5] The lion is a vulnerable species, having seen a major population decline in its African range of 30–50% per two decades during the second half of the 20th century.[2] Lion populations are untenable outside designated reserves and national parks. Although the cause of the decline is not fully understood, habitat loss and conflicts with humans are currently the greatest causes of concern. Within Africa, the West African lion population is particularly endangered. 2 Lions live for 10–14 years in the wild, while in captivity they can live longer than 20 years. In the wild, males seldom live longer than 10 years, as injuries sustained from continual fighting with rival males greatly reduce their longevity.[6] They typically inhabit savanna and grassland, although they may take...

Why People Should Not Be Allowed to Keep Exotic Animals as Pets

...Why People Should Not Be Allowed to Keep Exotic Animals as Pets I know most people including myself have wanted to own a wild or exotic animals but this Is my argument on why that is not a good idea. I know for me I have always been attached to owning a lion cub but as we all know lions cubs become big lions who could easily out weigh the average human being by 300 hundred pounds. Even if u were to get these animals on the day they were born you can never take all the wild out of a wild animal most and some can come with fatal consequence a gorilla for instinct is 10 time stronger than the average adult man so how would you be able to control it or an elephant most people think they are not aggressive but they have the most death against people than any other animal in captivity. Also people don’t know how much room and space that these animals really need these animals were made to be able to roam over vast areas like the plains, valleys, mountains and savannas it’s not the ideal place for a chimpanzee in your house or apartment climbing on your furniture destroying your home. Exotic pets also carry a lot of diseases at least one in three reptiles (which are among the most popular exotic pets – iguanas, for example) is a host for salmonella and shigella bacteria; the overall percentage with salmonella is probably up to 90 percent. According to data provided by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, 90 percent of imported green iguanas carry unfamiliar...

A Tale of Three Lions

...A Tale of Three Lions Haggard, Henry Rider Published: 1887 Type(s): Short Fiction, Adventure Source: http://www.gutenberg.org 1 About Haggard: Henry Rider Haggard was born at Bradenham, Norfolk, to Sir William Meybohm Rider Haggard, a barrister, and Ella Doveton, an author and poet. He was the eighth of ten children. He was initially sent to Garsington Rectory in Oxfordshire to study under the Reverend H.J. Graham but, unlike his older brothers who graduated from various Public Schools, he ended up attending Ipswich Grammar School. This was because his father, who regarded him as somebody who was not going to amount to much, could no longer afford to maintain his expensive private education. After failing his army entrance exam he was sent to a private ‘crammer’ in London to prepare for the entrance exam for the British Foreign Office, which in the end he never sat. Instead Haggard’s father sent him to Africa in an unpaid position as assistant to the secretary to the Lieutenant-Governor of Natal, Sir Henry Bulwer. It was in this role that Haggard was present in Pretoria for the official announcement of the British annexation of the Boer Republic of the Transvaal. In fact, Haggard raised the Union Flag and was forced to read out much of the proclamation following the loss of voice of the official originally entrusted with the duty. As a young man, Haggard fell deeply in love with Lilith Jackson, whom he intended to marry once he obtained paid employment in South Africa...

Bald Eagle Research Paper

...Appearance The bald eagle, or Haliaeetus leucocephalus, is a type of bird. Adult bald eagles are distinguishable due to their white head and tails, a contrast to their brown body. Young bald eagles have splotches of white, located on their tails and undersides. They also have a curved, pointed yellow beak. Bald eagles typically reach around one meter (three feet) in height, with a seven foot wingspan. Males weigh between eight and nine pounds, while females weigh ten to fourteen pounds. Location Bald eagles are found throughout North America. Although they live on most of the continent, bald eagles can mainly be found near sources of water such as ponds, lakes, rivers, and streams. It is not uncommon, however, for bald eagles to make their nest in pine forests near the coastline. Diet Bald eagles will eat a variety of foods, including small animals, waterfowl, wading birds, dead animals (also known as ‘carrion’), rodents, and smaller birds. They obtain this food by finding already dead animals, stealing it from other birds, or, of course, gathering the food on their own. Bald eagles typically consume between ½ - 1 pound of food per day. Though adult bald eagles have few natural predators, young bald eagles can be eaten by gulls, crows, hawks, bobcats, black bears and raccoons. Reproduction Bald eagles reproduce sexually. The mating season is any time between late September and early April. Bald eagles lay eggs five to ten days after mating, and the eggs are incubated for...

Documentary Review

...December 2013 Review Assignment After watching this video you start to think of Ohio as one massive enclosed zoo. This documentary touches on a great national debate in which both sides are holding their ground. It was alarming to me to see how many exotic animals were present all around us especially in Ohio. This movie shed light into the daily duties of a police officer that many people do not get to see, along with the responsibilities these officers have in society. I honestly thought this documentary was well put together and really gave credit to the officers that are on first lines of this exotic animal infestation. One of the more extreme examples of this animal infestation was with an older gentleman who was raising 2 African lions. Since he lived in a more remote area of Ohio he thought it would be all right to raise these exotic wild cats. The older gentleman who was raising these big cats had had them from when they were kittens and had grown to love these animals, which is what makes owning them even more dangerous. What really brought this documentary together was the fact that they showed both sides of this national debate. They gave you an inside look on how the owners of these animals are feeling and why they have these exotic pest. It also shows how the police and animal control have to round these dangerous animals up and risk their life doing so. All in all I thought this documentary was well put together and shed valuable insight into both sides of the a...

Canned Lion Hunts

...Lions are some of the most beautiful creatures found on earth and have long been the symbol of strength and courage. However, in South Africa two to three lions are killed each day in canned lion hunts. A “canned” hunt is defined as a hunt where an animal is pursued in an enclosed area guaranteeing a kill for the hunter. They have come to call these hunts “canned” because the kill is definite, or “in the can” as some say. These lions are raised in captivity with exposure to humans everyday only to be set loose in a confined area and shot. Since the lions are introduced to humans at a young age most of the lions do not see them as a threat and will not run when approached with a gun. Look Into the African Lion's Social Grouping

... The lionesses work together in every aspect of their life in order to help themselves and also to help the pride. They hunt together, have cubs at the same time and assist one another while raising the cubs. In an all female environment, females become much more social and open while working towards a common goal. However in an all male environment, the males show much more hostility towards one another in group activities because of the competition for dominance. Which is why there are a significantly lower numbers of males in any animals' groupings, the competition for dominance takes over and the good of the group is compromised. Therefore in classrooms modeling the 'ideal' female to male ratio of an "average pride consists of one to four males and as many as 15 females" (Packer, Scheel, and Pusey 1-19), a hierarchy is quickly establish along with a dominant male and female, allowing the others to fall in line. In the higher level mathematics course (by which I am basing my theory off), a dominant male is inarguably present. The other males flock to him mentally and physically. This...

Childish Teens

...Teenagers are on the cusp of adulthood, but still naive and impulsive. Sure, there are several exceptions to this rule, who are intelligent young people with a great head on their shoulders and know what they should be doing. However, as stated, they are the exception.  For analogy purposes, let's look at the lioness and her cubs. She brings the cubs with her on hunts, allows them to stalk the prey and sometimes, even allows them to initiate the kill. She expects them to exhibit adult lion behavior, while never letting them take the full responsibility yet. Why? Because they still don't know what they're doing. They only know what they've learned thus far. She still needs to teach them the finer points of being an adult lion, before they are ready to be treated like one.  Human teenagers, like the lion cubs, know what they are supposed to do up to a point, but still require more teaching, guidance and object learning, before they can be treated like adult humans.  I'm fairly certain that as you've grown, your mother stopped holding your hand when you crossed the street. She stopped cutting your food up for you. She started letting you dress and clean yourself. These are all steps toward adulthood, requiring you to act in an adult capacity, while still acknowledging that you are a child and still in need of teaching before you can act in full adult capacity.  The faster you learn and the more responsibility that you show your parents you can handle, the more they will...
