Memoirs of a Geisha holds many different components and raise many different questions about Japanese and American culture, culture of geishas, and the effect of World War II had on Japan.
A long standing stigma has been placed on Japanese Geisha girls. When someone thinks of a Geisha, they think of a glorified prostitute or call girl. Geishas are entertainers, and they are trained vigorously in art, music and dancing. Geishas have been entertaining for more than 350 years. The translation of Geisha in English is artist and becoming a Geisha is an honor to the girls.

A social change that was implemented in Japan after the war was that women were soon able to vote. Women soon started going to outside the home as workers and professionals. Japanese women had adopted the Western approach to love and marriage than the traditional style. They have also adopted Western dress and styles. Japanese women were also beginning to become involved in the government. Japan thrived from economic changes after the war. The United States invested millions in aid to restore Japan’s economy so they could succeed under their new democracy. Japan succeeded for several reasons. The adopted style of Japanese businesses was to treat business like family. Japanese workers have job security for life in return for their loyalty and efficiency in work. Employees have high self- esteem and pride in their work. Japan began new technologies from others creating a “high tech” business climate. Japan’s government and corporations work very closely together. The business climate in Japan included government restrictions on imports. The Japanese government spent very little on defense. Since 1945, the USA has assumed responsibility for defending Japan. Last, Japan has a favorable balance of trade with other nations. They purposely export more than they
