Free College Proposal Essay

There are many policy issues that I feel passionate about, but I chose to focus on the free college proposal. Although this has not gotten approved yet, there are many questions and potential problems surrounding this controversial piece of legislation. If I were in the position to vote, I would not be in favor of Governor Raimondo’s proposal. First, it would cost taxpayers a very large amount of money to fund this program. While it is a great idea in theory to support those who would not have an opportunity to attend college otherwise, lower and middle-class citizens would also have to pay money for the children in families with large amounts of wealth and income. Next, the overall value of a college degree will decrease if there is a significant …show more content…
I first asked him for brief overview of his position so I could get a sense of where he stands on the debate. His primary concern was that this would be a difficult process that would come with a heavy expense. It would be a great opportunity to see anyone with potential be able to go to to college and have help paying for it, but this honorable ideas, as it stands now, is not feasible. Both he and I believe that if you give something away, it holds less value and he mentioned that it sometimes can be important for students to have “skin in the game”. In addition, he feels the academic requirement is too low. A C- average throughout college will not be appealing to employers, so many of these graduates will end up with low-paying jobs that do not require a bachelor’s degree. Finally, he believes that there needs to be an income and residency requirement. If a family makes over a certain amount of money, he said perhaps $150,000, college should not be completely free. Also, students should not be allowed to immediately leave the state after graduation because that will not be helping the Rhode Island economy. In contrast, the main benefit to this program would be that more professors would be hired and more money would hopefully be given to the schools to support all of the new students. Therefore, we certainly agree that there are changes that must be made before this proposal is

Rhetorical Analysis

...On February 10, 2015, Lexeme county’s largest and fastest growing newspaper; the citizens voice published an article by Michael A. MacDowell entitled “The Community College Model Works Just Fine” In this article, MacDowell, aims to convince his audience mostly the middle class citizens that President Barack Obama’s proposal for free tuition in the community college system is an admirable goal but the “practicality and unintended consequences of such a program render it problematic at best”.Throughout the essay, Dr. MacDowell uses logos, pathos and ethos to effectively support his thesis that “by federalizing the finances of community colleges through this free tuition proposal, the efficiencies enjoyed at the two-year college level may evaporate under the stress of federal oversights that tend to maximize interference and reduce effectiveness”. In the first paragraph MacDowell uses a combination of ethos and logos to introduce his topic to the audience and also establish his credibility. He begins by stating that the proposal regarding free tuition in community college is “an admirable goal” at the same time he continues to state that “the practicality and unintended consequences” of the program render it “problematic at best” MacDowell’s use of the solemn tone was appropriate to the audience and shows his sincerity and common sense as well as respect and understanding of the position of the audience. By doing this MacDowell has effectively made the audience trust...

Choices of life What would you do if you could decide your future, your life and your way in a couple of seconds? Will you take the chance and risk, or will you sit and wait for something else to happen? I took a risk when I decided to come in the United States, and there is no doubt that this decision has been the biggest choice I had to make in my life so far. The proposal came almost out of nowhere. I had heard about a coach who was interested in college soccer players, so I went to a scrimmage he had organized, not thinking that I could be the chosen one, not thinking that a day like that could change my entire life course. After the game, the coach came to me and asked me, “Do you want to come to America?” I accepted the proposal in no time. After all, that was the reason I went to the scrimmage in the first place. I was so happy he selected me out of so many players that I did not think about the importance of my decision. After a few days and sleepless nights, I began to have second thoughts. I realized how big this was...

The Terms and Conditions of My Life According to Jimmy

...portfolio demonstrates my understanding of persuasive writing. My idea of persuasive writing is that a good essay will affect the reader in some way shape or form. I believe combining effective uses of logos, pathos, and egos along with structure are very important. My persuasive writing reflects the way I think about argumentation in general. I can see how easy it can be to write a paper arguing a point, but not doing it in the correct manner. For example, if a writer just argues his point without giving any strong evidence and offers no counter-argument the paper will not be effective in persuading the reader. While my writing demonstrates strengths in organization and thesis development, I will continue to work to improve proofreading skills and sentence structure. What’s helped my writing this semester is that I feel confident about work. My writing demonstrates my strength in organization. A lot of this strength originates from class activities and notes. The class that had the biggest effect on me was when we learned about rhetorical analysis structure on page one of my handwritten evidence. In my notes I specifically write down the structure along with extra notes under some categories so I fully understand how to attack the assignment. This led to me getting a perfect ten score under the argumentative structure part on the grading rubric on my rhetorical analysis essay, which is titled “Exposing Education.” Since that learning moment from class I knew that having a well-designed...

How to Prevent Drinking and Driving

...until eleven o’clock so then it would be too late for people to go out and drink. In the outlets there could be restaurants, nail places, clay bakers and an arcade so everything that a person needed would be right there in one spot. If we had a bowling alley in our community than people could get a group of friends together and be able to go midnight bowling. This would keep people from drinking and going to parties later. They could make just a teens night at the bowling alley and just an adults night. That way teenagers parents couldn’t show up and spy on them or bother them. Bowling could be a fun place for boyfriend/ girlfriend bonding and it is also a place for some family fun. When I went to my sister’s college she was explaining to me that when college students drink they have a van called safe ride. Whenever someone has been drinking even if they are underage they call safe ride to pick them...

...Beginning with a basic outline, I was then able to fill in the gaps with facts and statistics from my sources. After filling in the outline, I would turn to my research, especially my annotated bibliography, in order to add to the basic ideas previously written out. When completing my original draft, I would then continue to make revisions by checking for misspellings, improper grammar, or ineffective use of diction and syntax. Although I was taught how to write a paper a long time ago, it is now a much more natural process. Progressing from the basic outline to a nicely thought out paper, has made me feel closer to a college level writer, and more prepared for next fall at Iowa...

Contrasting the Proposals of Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. Dubois

...History Essay Contrasting the Proposals of Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. DuBois United States History 1828 - 1914 Instructor Stewart King Clackamas Community College February 7, 2012 Accommodation vs. Integration In March of 1895, Booker T. Washington delivered his now famous Atlanta Compromise Speech. In brief, Washington proposed that blacks accept segregation and focus on getting jobs rather than demanding equality. He also proposed that blacks concentrate on learning trades and how to work with their hands – not necessarily in becoming book smart. Perhaps even more central to his message, Washington argued that if blacks focused on equality they would never make it anywhere in society. In short, Washington’s policy was one of accommodation and not rocking the boat. (Washington) Washington was very clear about what he felt black intentions should be, stating that blacks should only be seeking opportunity – not for the right to integrate with white society. He wanted white society to see the good in all black people, and not as a threat to their way of life. Eight years later, W.E.B. offered a critique of Washington’s proposal. While DuBois respected Washington as a black leader, he felt that his policy of accommodation was holding back the black race. Contrary to Washington, DuBois felt that "the right to vote," "civic equality," and "the education of youth according to ability" were essential for African American progress. (DuBois) ...

Reflection

...Week One: Reflect on your experiences as a writer so far – in high school, in other college courses, at home, and in the workplace. What do you value in writing? How do you write differently, depending on your readers? Do you write for your own personal pleasure? Writing has always been a hobby for me. From the time I was a child all the way up until my adult life, I often found myself writing short stories for fun. Writing is an outlet. It enables you to empty your mind of all of your thoughts and ideas and write them down on paper; while trying to make an attempt to persuade your audience. My experiences as a writer all tie in together. When I was in the 11th grade, I decided to sign up for creative writing courses. These courses were considered electives and I looked at them as an easy A. Creative writing taught me how to properly and effectively get my message across without error and in the appropriate context. My writing style depends on who my audience is. If I am trying to persuade someone, I am going to take a proposal or an argumentative approach. If I am telling a personal experience, I’m using a friendly approach. My writing style varies depending on the situation. If I am writing an essay, I’m going to try my best to write properly. If I’m texting, I’m going to use free formed words in a sense that I get my message across as quickly as possible. If I’m typing an email at work, I have to make sure that it is grammatically correct, and that my message...

Pros And Cons Of Recruiting In Public Schools

...Tommy Huskey English 112 Essay #3 Persuasive Argument Nov. 4, 2015 Military recruiting in public schools Military recruitment has become an important issue. Often in the past some parents and teachers have protested about military personnel visiting schools to talk to students about the armed forces. But since 2001 the No Child Left behind Act has meant that US schools which receive government money must allow the military in to talk to students (Paton). One of the more common proposals is to ban military recruiting of those that are under 18, which would severely limit the ability of recruiters to operate. In the past years the USA and its allies have been involved in major conflicts. There are a lot questions and conflicts with this issue. The positive outcomes of recruitment will be strongly discussed. Do military recruiters provide valuable info? "Douglas Smith, a US Army spokesman, said the job of recruiters is not to make promises but to show...
