Minimize Your Footprint
Humans live to evolve, throughout history we have invented new technologies to us towards our advantage. Planet earth’s resources, one way or another, are used to support the creation of these inventions. We must come together to conserve our resources, the resources that are vital for human existence. Individuals are creating alternative ways to everyday life that directly influence our impact on Mother Nature; these developments are subject areas for green technology.
To learn about green technology we first have to understand what it means to be green and the terminology of technology. When a co-worker come to you and says, “I am going green”, more often than not, they are not talking about the color green. They are referring to their decision to become eco-friendly. The second part we must try to understand the meaning of technology. The “Business Dictionary,” defines technology as, “The purposeful application of information in the design, production, and utilization of goods and services, and in the organization of human activities” (Business Dictionary, 2013). When combined these two entities lead to the creation of eco-friendly designs, products, services, and organizations.
Numerous amounts of new technology are becoming readily available, while older technology is being revamped. Subject areas of green technology include: energy, green building, environmentally preferred purchasing, green chemistry, and green nanotechnology (Green Technology, 2006). These areas taking tiny steps in the right direction, they are reducing our footprint on earth by creating a less hazardous environment and prolonging the lifespan earth’s natural resources. The promotion of green technology will provide a better quality of life now and for future generations.
The largest portion of green technology falls into the energy subdivision. Before the industrial revolution there was not a great need energy, work was finished by the sweat of our brows. As time passed we began to use our wits and not some much brawn, our muscle power turned into mechanical power. Mechanical power gives us the opportunity to accomplish a greater amount of work in a shorter amount of time with less effort. The production of energy started with simple, steam powered machines. A report by the Union of Concerned Scientist states, “Simple machines based on the ability to harness the power of steam have been dated by some sources as far back as ancient Alexandria” (Union of Concerned Scientist, n.d.). Modifications to the steam engine continued to lead to more productive, complex, and efficient motors, these engines began to run with the heat produced by burning coal. In 1880 the first steam engine was attached to a generator, the generator would turn mechanical energy into electricity. Shortly after the generator was invented power plants began developing all over the United States. In Appleton, Wisconsin, 1881, a corn mill was transformed into the first hydroelectric power plant (Union of Concerned Scientist, n.d.). This maybe the first recorded occurrence of green technology.
If you have ever flown on a commercial aircraft during the night time, you may have noticed the cities were lit up like Independence Day. Have you ever wondered how the majority of our cities are powered? Contrary to many thoughts, there are not millions of hamsters running on wheels to produce energy. Most of the U.S. cities are powered by burning coal and natural gas. The World Nuclear association stated, “In 2011, the U.S. electricity generation was 4344 billion kWh gross, 1874 TWh (43%) of it from coal-fired plants, 1047 TWh (24%) from gas, 821 TWh (19%) nuclear, 351 TWh (8%) from hydro and 121 TWh (2.8%) from wind” (world-nuc.org, 2012). These stats show that nearly 11% of America’s energy production was produced by environmentally friendly means. The other 89% of energy was produced by using natural resources, the burning of these natural resources effect the air quality and ozone. Below is a chart showing the breakdown on U.S. energy production.

Another area that is up and coming is building green, also known as green construction or green sustainment. Building green is a critical part in saving natural resources and conserving energy. This is when a person, organization, or business decides to construct or modify a structure using environmentally friendly techniques and materials. Implementing these green techniques and building material into a structure is beneficial to the environment and to consumers. In 2012, The Environmental Protection Agency reported, “In the United States buildings account for: 39 percent of total energy use, 12 percent of the total water consumption, 68 percent of total electricity consumption, 38 percent of the carbon dioxide emissions” (EPA, 2012). Constructing buildings out of green material is a great start to minimizing our impact on planet earth.
Building green does not necessarily mean constructing the entire structure of green material. Incorporate green material during any stage of construction or during a renovating is very practical. Replacing single paned windows with double paned will insulate your home better saving energy. Installing green materials for flooring, cabinetry, and energy star appliances are great improvements to your home. These modifications can be a little more expensive upfront, but you should realize the benefits of these upgrades. First off, you will be using eco-friendly materials. Second, your consumption of energy will be much less. Third, the lifespan of your products you will end up saving money.
As we use technology advancements to better our way of life we also diminish earth’s precious resources. Crude oil is a raw, natural resource that we refine for the production of gasoline. We pull resources from the earth only to pollute our atmosphere. Cars burn gasoline to create energy, they also create harmful byproducts. Carbon monoxide is the main pollutant that is produced, other byproducts include unburned hydrocarbons, and nitrogen oxides. A study stated, “Nitrous oxide has now become the largest ozone-depleting substance emitted through human activities, and is expected to remain the largest throughout the 21st century.” (Daniel, Portmann, Ravishankara, 2009). The harmful effects of an automobile’s exhaust has led to the invention of catalytic converters and hybrid cars. The catalytic converter brings down the emissions that are released into the atmosphere. While the hybrid car uses two or more source to power the car, reducing the consumption of fuel and vehicle emissions.
The government, businesses, and individuals are now aware of how our daily choices directly impact of environment. This has led to the implication of several government agencies, one of the most important being the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). “As you know, EPA administers and enforces a variety of pollution control laws, including the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act, and laws related to the management, disposal and cleanup of hazardous waste such as the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), and the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA)” (Steven, 2004). These agencies monitor, regulate, and enforce laws that protect the environment, just another way we can try to protect the earth we live on.
It may be impossible to completely stop pollution, as people we can take minor steps to prolong the existence of humans on Planet Earth. Creating a resolution to help save the environment is not going to be easy or happen overnight. We are beginning to move in the right direction and green technology is a great start.
There are new ideas and processes being put into effect to conserve energy. A great example that is evolving is the development of an electrical Smart Grid. The Smart Grid is a new configuration and upgrade of our current electrical system. According to Bowles, “The U.S. Department of Energy estimates the Smart Grid could allow tripling the amount of electricity being sent through existing energy corridors without having to build more power plants, saving utility companies billions of dollars” (as cited in U.S. Department of Energy, 2010).
We should solely rely on the government to find an answer for our ongoing problems. Any citizen can directly make a small impact now, everyone can their own part. Simple task such as recycling your trash or ride your bicycle to work. Riding your bicycle to and from work would not only improve the environment, it would improve your overall health and fitness. If a bicycle ride is not a practical mode of transportation, you could consider carpooling or city transit.
As respectful people to society we should try our best to think about possible resolutions to the ever increasing demand we put upon Mother Nature. She is going to be the one that provides for our future generations. I am not saying you need to purchase the latest and greatest hybrid car or install solar panels on roof of your home, even though, those ideas are both great and admirable decisions. To some people they are just not feasible. I am just asking you to make responsible decisions, hold yourself accountable, and be cognizant of your actions. Ultimately, we are the ones that hold the key to our future.

Do We Have Free Will?

...Do We Have Free Will? It is Friday night and your friends have just invited you to what is supposed to be the best party of the year, but it is your little brother’s birthday. Right before the party, you sit down to weigh your options and decided to stay home to celebrate your little brother’s birthday. Did you just make a free choice, or was your decision just the result of the natural laws in the universe coming together forcing you to stay home? In the words of Arthur Schopenhauer, ""Man can do what he wills but he cannot will what he wills" . According to this, though you may believe that you have the complete freedom to choose where you wanted to go, your ultimate choice was caused by the events that occurred before this one. Although the choice of going to the party or staying home may seem to have given the illusion of free will, there was ultimately a physical law that could most likely explain why this decision was made. First off, there are three main viewpoints on the idea of free will: compatibilism, determinism, and indeterminism. Compatibilists state that it is possible for both free will and determinism to exist at the same time. Given an instance, a compatibilist will say that even though you are only really presented with one option in all situations, if this option is in accordance with the your true desires, then you have free will. Another idea some compatibilists believe is that there is always a natural law that can explain an outcome, but on...

The Star

...Father Tom: On a recent trip to a far away galaxy, a team of astro-physicists, including me, came across a planet that was engulfed by a super-nova explosion. When we got to that planet we found evidence of human-like life. How can God create an entire planet and then destroy it just as quickly? What are the characteristics of this God? Is this God worthy of our worship? How does God allow for such evil? John Hicks: Father Tom, it seems like you have come across the problem of evil. Sarah: What do you mean of the problem of evil? Is evil not a consequence of the devil? A fallen angel who wants all of God’s followers to turn to him instead? The Devil: Yes, Sarah you are correct. I am the source of all evil; the one who causes the pain and suffering in the world today. JH: Sarah, do not listen to him. He is not as powerful as God. His power is not enough to cause all of the evil on the world. S: Then what is the “problem of evil”? JH: God is known as all powerful, all knowing, all good. If God exists, and if he is all powerful then he is able to change and eliminate evil. If God is all knowing then he has full knowledge of all evil that occurs in the world. If he is all good then he wants to create a freedom from evil. But, evil exists. So, if evil exists then God isn’t all powerful, all knowing and/or all good, or God does not exist. FT: Without God, there would be no problem of evil. God created all things, so God created evil; natural and moral. S: What do you mean...

Elie Wiesel's Struggles

...The Changes of One Through Struggles In the article “The America I Love” by Elie Wiesel and the image “Breaking Free” by Leslie Fieger reveal that when struggles happen, some people fall back on their back up plans, while others try to overcome struggles because they are hoping that they can learn and achieve their goals afterward. Through diction, imagery, syntax, and tone, both Wiesel and Fieger demonstrate that life always comes with difficulties and challenges, and successful people are those who know how to learn from their struggles, have hopes, and willing to help others throughout their path of life. First, the meaning of learning is important because to learn from struggles can make one become stronger in a way. According on the text...

The Benefits Of Free Community College

...year of high school. There have been recent debates about whether college tuition should be free or not. I realized that it would be better to pay for schooling on my own. I have looked at the community college price compared to prices at universities. I would much rather go to a community college especially because I’m not sure what I want to get into. Many of my classmates would probably say that free college sounds like a wonderful idea, while others don’t really think so. Some college graduates might have already paid off their own student loans or started paying them off. Why should others have to worry about paying more tax money for other people...

Does Free Will Exsist

...Leslie Jordan April 19, 2010 Paper 5 Does Free Will Exist? The idea of free will has always been a very interesting topic for me to discuss, because there really is no wrong answer of if free will exist or not. No one can provide proof of us having free or not unless they can talk with God and we all know that being able to actually talk to God and he actually respond is considered “crazy”. I believe that if you believe you have free will than you have free will. As children were always told that you can do and be whatever you want as long as you believe so I figure the same rule applies to free will. I am discussing the idea of free will with in the character Billy Pilgrim. The Tralfamadorians live with the knowledge of the fourth dimension, they believe that all moments of time are happening and taking place simultaneously. Because the Tralfamadorians believe that all moments of time have already taken place; they also believe their life path has been predetermined and they have no control over it, therefore causing the aliens not to believe in free will and finding it strange that humans do. According to the Tralfamadorians earthlings are the only species that believe they have free will, humans for some reason think of time as a linear progression. Most humans believe they have control over their lives and their destiny. Billy seems to have no control in his life or any free will at all throughout this novel, his free will is constantly being challenged. In one instance...

Voter Capabilities

...that are given just for being a citizen. Voting is a personal choice for Americans. The fears of losing rights and freedom have been present for many decades and centuries. Everybody is concerned that citizens may not be as free as they once were. People fought hard to make every American citizen free. Citizens who complain that our government is not perfect and is not doing well for the United States are people who usually do not even vote. One vote can make a difference. Citizens are extremely concerned with our rights and freedom, but do not even attempt to make a change. Citizens are capable of holding the responsibility of voting and being a United States citizen. Although citizens are capable, Americans do not attempt to be more informed. I think that if a citizen is more informed, the better choices that then leads to better decisions in the United States. Citizens are responsible for their own country and they need to take part in making this country succeed. Politicians may not always make the best decisions, so when citizens have the chance; they need to get their thoughts and words out. United States Citizens are Americans; citizens of the United States are live in freedom and have rights. Citizens need to remember that they became free and that the freedom leads them to make decisions that are best for every body, including themselves. Freewill

...Free will is not an illusion. Critically discuss. This essay defends the claim that free will is not an illusion. The first supportive argument for this claim by Aristotle is that we are all responsible for our actions (Aristotle & Taylor, C.C.W. 2006) and also we also responsible to the formation of our character. The second argument to support that free will is not an illusion, whether we like it or not we are free as stated by Sartre arguing that we are condemned to be free (Bernasconi 2007). Together with this view Augustine argue that there is a higher power but we are still free to make choices, those who are predestined to the heaven and those who are not. However this does mean we have free will but it’s a matter of clarification of how this relates to our free will. If determinism were to be right and that some of our decisions are predetermined it is true to say that our decisions are also based upon fate. In a certain aspect, by the person that we are, our gender, race, and religion and status and past experiences, we have been explained that these things do affect our decisions, and that we always have a minimum of two choices for everything we need to do. If someone at any point of time, anywhere was to make a choice that is truly free and voluntary then it can be proved that we have free will. Libertarianism argues that free will is an action involving true devised commands where human beings are free in their action as they are able reason without any physical...

Pros and Cons of Free Trade

...I. Introduction Free trade, the ever present driving force behind our national and world economy, is a trade policy embroiled in controversy. It is considered by most economists to be an almost perfect trade policy, barring a few negative effects. Free trade has been shown to increase production, output and income levels in an economy. However, there are many people that view free trade as destroyer of economies and a catalyst of poverty. Critics of free trade have pointed out that in the short-run, free trade causes a loss of jobs which in turn causes a rise in poverty levels. It is interesting to note that the argument for free trade and the argument against free trade are inverses of each other. Proponents of free trade see it as a tool to stimulate an economy while detractors see it as a policy which exacerbates poverty, causes dependency and reduces economic stability. In general, there is no consensus on free trade. Economists see free trade as the devil that we know. While imperfect, it is the best we have to work with. Popular opinion sees free trade as a cause of inequality. Even though it alleviates poverty and causes economic stimulation in the long-run, it can cause the exact opposite in the short run. The pros and the cons of free trade must then be weighed, which will then allow us to determine if free trade is truly a beneficial trade policy. Therefore, this discussion will weigh the benefits and harms of free trade and will prove that although...

God and Free Will

...agrees that an essential property of God must be that he must be perfectly free or at least have some type of freedom. Morris and Swinburne contend that where humans have free will, which might be just a marginal amount of freedom, God has the maximum amount possible of freedom that is logically possible limited by the other characteristics of God. However, it seems when closely examined, many of God’s essential characteristics strip him of any kind of freedom believers might attribute to him. Defining God’s freedom seems to be a very abstract and difficult task. As humans, we feel as though we have free will. There are many different ways to define human free will, but a common characteristic is the ability to have done otherwise in a situation. Meaning, if I were placed in the same exact situation where I had to make a decision multiple times, I could make a different decision each time. However, it seems that given the same exact circumstances, I would have no reason to make a different decision; I would always make the same choice, unless there was an element of randomness introduced. This doesn’t seem like a good way to define free will; God’s intentions never should seem random. A different interpretation would have free will as simply the ability to decide and act given different choices. In this interpretation, I would always make the same decision given the same circumstances. This type of free will seems to hold more merit in terms of human affairs. We can easily see...

Free Will: Is It's An Illusion?

They are all forced on us from the day we were born, and will always be until the day we die. So with that being said, yes, I feel that free will is just an illusion. It's an illusion that is brought upon us so we don't ever realize the slaves we have become in our own world and society. We are formed by the people around us, people that portray themselves as being above us. We obey and follow rules that our society has brought to us. We agree and respect its values because they made us feel as if we do have the free will to vote and make the decisions they're actually making, In reality we...

There is no counting the prowess of the Adobe line of products which can be used in free trials. Adobe Photoshop CS5 is truly magical in its editing and design powers for most Windows users. In this version, the speed and power that users will have access to are mingled with some of the most basic and recognizable Photoshop features. According to Adobe, the download should not take very long. But a fast download is always dependent on how free the Windows system at hand is. One new feature that is worth mentioning is the improved crop tool that is fast in understanding the content you are working on. In fact, the design tools of Adobe Photoshop CS5 all include the new Content-Aware Patch technology which ultimately results in error-free designs. The interface of Adobe Photoshop CS5 can sometimes be too advanced and too cluttered for its own good which is a disadvantage especially for novice users. The manner in which your Windows system can be transformed into a tool for creativity is unparallelled and it is all thanks to the fast download of Photoshop.
