Of all the movies based off the nineteen sixties era, I chose to cover the movie “Freedom writers” which was established in two-thousand and nine. This movie is based off white and African American groups that were civil rights activists who participated in Freedom Rides. These rides were bus trips that were taken through the American South in nineteen sixty-one to protest segregation on bus terminals. The underlying social issue in the movie covers race, drugs, and gender. To begin with, an English teacher by the name of Mrs. Gruwell is hired to teach the segregated portion of the school, which consists of African Americans, Hispanics, Chinese, and one white male. These kids begin with low test scores because no one had ever put any effort into teaching them. The class material they were given to study and learn from were old worn books and used supplies that the classes of white children had used for years and recycled to get new ones. The woman who interviews Mrs. Gruwell tells her that the students aren’t smart enough for the course material she planned to cover with them and that they would be lucky if they even graduated. She also tells her that she shouldn’t wear her beloved pearl necklace that her father had bought for her because her students could steal it, which was a judgement concluded by their …show more content…
Gruwell is not immediately accepted by her class because she is white, and the students are used to being mistreated by people who are of that ethnicity. The students feel that people who are white are entitled and have better chances at becoming things they aspire to be. The class is divided into groups of race and they do not like people who are not inside their circle. Overtime, the students begin to trust her and enjoy her class because she goes out of her way to teach her students. She even starts working a second job to buy her students new course material, which shocks the students because no one has ever done anything like that for

...Freedom Writers Self-concept is the entirety of one's beliefs and attitudes towards their personal existence. Many people, depending on life experience, feel they have superiority or are at a disadvantage because of the group they fall into. This is seen in the movie Freedom Writers, each and every student has their own perspective on their own self-concept. These students end up finding similarities between each other because they have some sort of connection but only find it once they learn and open up about their struggles. There are many concepts of the self that can be found throughout the entire film.   Empathy is one of the major concepts of The Freedom Writers.  Empathy is the ability to put yourself into another person’s experience and to completely understand the other’s thoughts, feelings and way of being. Gruwell's enthusiasm is challenged when she finds her class is composed of "at-risk" students, the "untouchables," and not the eager-for-college students she expected. ...Teacher Evaluation In the “Freedom Writers,” a teacher was needed to teach freshmen English at Woodrow Wilson High School and Erin Gruwell took on that challenge. As it turned out, it was nothing like what she imagined it to be. There was racial segregation in the classroom and all her students had problems outside and inside of school. That however, did not stop her from being passionate about her job. She used new techniques to help her students become interested in the class while learning and made many sacrifices for those kids which no other teacher was willing to do.
