In William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, Juliet, Friar Lawrence, and Romeo ostensibly are to blame for the deaths of both Romeo and Juliet. All three come into this context more than other character’s because they started everything from the beginning. Without Romeo and Juliet falling in love so quickly and then wanting to get married so early, none of the conflict would have happened. When Romeo had been trying to get with Rosaline, he had been rejected and went to talk with Benvolio, “Tut, I have lost myself. I am not here./ This is not Romeo. He’s some other where” (I.i.205-206). This basically states that he is not himself and he is now a depressed version of Romeo after his rejection. During this time he had been very sad and would talk with noone, which would be very selfish on his part because all he is thinking about is the fact that he’s been rejected and thinks he is lost his touch. Romeo could have easily moved on from Rosaline healthily, but instead Mercutio had persuaded Romeo to go to the Capulet ball where he fell in love with Juliet very quick. The meeting of the two young lovers would be an inevitable mistake and showed that they are both selfish, as stated before, for wanting to get married so quickly. As their relationship progressed and Romeo had received word from Balthasar that she had died, asked, “Hast thou no letter to me from the Friar?” in which Balthasar replied, “No, my good lord” (V.i.33-34). This conversation states that Friar Lawrence had not sent a letter to Romeo explaining that something was wrong, but if Romeo were smart, he would have realized that the Friar would tell him if something were wrong. His next decision was to go to Juliet’s tomb and kill himself next to her, “Well, Juliet, I will lie with thee tonight” (V.i.37). This is a very selfish act because Romeo could easily just go to the Friar and asked what had happened instead of acting so irrationally. Romeo doing this is also a way of him getting out of life selfishly. He then proceeded to go to a poor apothecary and bribe him, “Hold, there is forty ducats. Let me have/ A dram of poison, such soon-speeding gear” (V.i.43-44). This would be the killing poison Romeo would take to kill himself in Juliet’s tomb. This
